Your right it didn’t really expand on the plot it felt really rushed and Edmund was eerie and all but they didn’t do justice to his final form, he wasn’t scary again and that was really sad after all that development in his character.

I know I am late. I just finished watching but I agree with you about Luke James' performance, he was awesome. Personally, I think HE should have been the main character and the movie should have been about him/his life.I was bored with the cop storyline. I wanted more of Luke's character.

I disagree with your critique, I do believe things were not full explained in Seasons 1 & 2 will come to light in a later season. The only deaths in this season that made sense was the foster and adoption mothers so I'm with you there. But overall GREAT breakdown of this season.

@@omarjohnson4528 just wanted to get your opinion on something. I can understand him killing the Foster mother because she was mean to them but the adoptive Mother wasn't mean she just sent him back for the reason she stated, but why did he never go back and kill the white family? They disowned him as well.

Edmund broke my heart , this whole thing broke my heart . Was scarier in the beginning when I didn't know what was going on but once it clicked it was more sad . Children experiencing such harmful things , rejection, abandonment ,abuse are all so real and heartbreaking.

I saw a little too much of myself in him. The recording of that guy talking about an "emotional rot" that creeps in due to a weak foundation of familial love is something I'm far too familiar with. I just got out of therapy after spending months unpacking abandonment issues, and it's unsettling just how much one's life can go off track because of them.

@@alisarsour8552 exactly. My other siblings had a rougher time, and ended up dealing with alcohol and substance use issues, running into trouble with the law, and just generally having a rough time of it. I got hit with really nasty depression and some anger problems, but I was generally the "good kid" because I learned that staying quiet and not upsetting others was a way to cope and survive. We all "turned out okay", but there's this sort of resentment towards my parents for their lack of emotional availability, and a sense of grieving what I never had. So seeing Edmund go through what he did, as messed up as it was, I could completely understand it too.

I've always considered the demon to be a manifestation of black/generational trauma. Each time the characters were subjected to some form of social degradation or marginalization, the demon seemed to get stronger/more aggressive (usually coinciding with their ethical resolve and sense of identity starting to unravel). Moreover, I think the demon takes on the form of the trauma that the character is battling the most. In season one the father felt like he was "tap dancing" for his white bosses and colleagues. Therefore the demon appeared to him as a simpering and stereotypical figure to better mock his feelings of inadequacy and shame. In season two, it seems as though the demon took the form of Raggedy Andy not so much to mock, but moreso to entice. It fed off Edmund's loneliness and isolation and offered him a form that symbolized an unyielding bond. Because Dawn already had established familial connections (particularly motherhood) prior to this, the demon was less effective in it's enticement. I also feel as though the "tap dancing man" appeared to Dawn due to her decision to embrace the role of "LAPD" when Edmund arrived at her house to connect, rather than her role as a fellow black person/supportive community. Now the self-deprecation and guilt are manifesting as the "tap dancing" demon. All of this in theory, of course lol.

I think it did a really good job depicting the trauma black boys experience, while season one really focused on trauma experienced by black women/girls. Being unable to scream, being criminalized, type casted. Dawn and Edmond exhibited the same behavior as 3 years old. Dawns mom spoke of tantrums, blamed Edmond for being unable to open a childproof medicine. Then he was later abandoned for the safety of his white sister because he went through puberty. Then he went throughout the community literally “breaking” people/leaving them broken.

Agreed. It also shows how tough it is for kids who aren’t “black” enough to be accepted by their own, but aren’t accepted by others because they’re still black and respected even less than a gangbanger because media says thugs are the symbol of black masculinity. Even the son is ashamed of having a mom as a cop because in the black community it can be considered being a sell out.

He was also failed because of the lack of resources in place at the time. Single blk mom 👩🏽 not knowing what else to do for him. Transracial adoption is challenging. Not to make excuses and play devil's advocate, but during that time it just wasn't heard of or thought of to provide therapy. I think little marvin was trying to show that they did what they believed was their best at the time. A lot of victims here. Not to diagnose, but Edmund could have been dealing with borderline personality disorder and possibly dissociative identity disorder. Maybe the haunting and seeming possession represents that.

I guessed that Edmund was the demon by episode 2 and we were watching how he slowly became insane. A theme throughout his story was rejection. He targeted the drug dealer because, just like his foster mother he was doing things he wasn’t supposed to while children were around and was trying to hide it. The little Mexican boy represented his sister Dawn because their parents chose to keep him and send his brother home because he was ‘difficult’ and causing trouble, like Edmund. And the Korean twins represented how inseparable and close they were, like Dawn & Edmund. As for the covering windows and mirrors I took it as Edmund (before giving himself to the demon) being obsessed with his reflection. He was always looking at himself in the mirror and making video tapes of his auditions and video logs about his life. And that’s how the demon sometimes communicated with his victims, through TV screens and reflections. Questioning, do you see your true self? I agree with your point about Pam Grier, they did her dirty 😂

@EbF-lg3kd
@EbF-lg3kd 3 ай бұрын
@@MovieFiles I feel like the reasoning provided in the show for targeting the victims, aside from being, themselves, little plot devices to move the story forward, were murky at best, not morally focused, but, the killings were mainly meant to either be vengeful or to convey Edmond's past to the sister; like you said they never fully explained the lore and rules for the demon (like showing up in the mirror and how it spread -- at first i thought it spread based on people watching copies of black market or sent video tapes that Edmond made, that would have made sense) but they definitely made it a point in the show to mention that the drug dealer was killed in front of his son as a message to the sister to tell Edmond's story, specifically how their adopted Dad died in front of him when he was a child. She mentions that the baby was taped to the high chair and forced to watch the drug dealer dad die. The idea is also revisited during her mother's death scene and further expounded upon when he makes her understand that he felt helpless in that moment when her husband was having the heart attack in front of him and he couldn't open the bottle for his heart medication, it wasn't his fault. Edit: Still enjoyed the show though, just wasn't as scary or traumatizing I guess as season 1. The gorgeous Deborah Ayorinde and Luke James killed it! 😉

i think Edmunds character was so lost on who he was. The white family that adopted him, he wanted to be accepted by. not sure how long they had him but i think a lot of it showed him basically wanting to be white. It was mentioned when he tried to get the role of the serial killer that there isnt any black serial killers in movies. The grandmother/mother said she didnt want them having the dolls because they were based in racism but Edmund wouldnt accept the black dolls. He seemed to struggle with what Ruby his biological mom went through.

I said the same thing. I think this is also why his victims were all minorities. His sister became a cop bc she wanted to STOP racial injustice. He knew how to catch her attention because he went for victims he knew the LAPD white cops wouldn’t care to get Justice for, but DAWN would.

My reaction too! It’s in ways symbolic and freaky as hell to know that there was still demons that haunt the Emory bloodline. Including Dawn for now we know that she and Edmund were Ruby Emory’s children. But makes me wonder that if there is gonna be a season 3 of Them, what’s the next story and gonna happen next….

If you pay close attention a lot of this series deals with boxes. In the first season the box was where the mom held her deceased baby, and in the final episode where the sister is in the bathroom facing her demon it’s said “you held your deceased brother in a box” fast forward to the second season the step mom has a box given to her by the daughter in the first season with a picture of her twin brother.

I hope Little Marvin gives us another season. He is obviously a master of horror. I loved the detective aspect in this season. Edmund was an A-tier villain. 9.5/10 season. Would have been 10 if it was just a little more clear during the first watch why The Scare went after the Mexican boy.

Edmund's auditions/audition tapes being comically bad was the point. He had a passion for acting that he couldn't fulfill because he was poor at it. Except, for the time he embodied a serial killer/move monster. Which I guess was influenced by the evil spirirts or whatever. I kinda wish this season was more of character study around the Edmund character, b/c Luke James was really good in this role. Lot of similarities to Joaquin Phoenix's role in "Joker".

I really like this theory! I think you're correct in perceiving the killings as more of a personal message to Dawn. The victims of each slaying and their familial circumstances were there to help recover repressed memories of Edmund and their childhood. Mrs. Mott's murder was pretty direct since she was their abusive foster mother for a time. I think the intention was that the cramped closet and space under the sink would jog her memory of having a twin. The killings that followed suggest the same. A young Edmond sits helpess while his father dies (the drug dealer and his child), one good twin and one "bad" twin who is essentially discarded (Edmund's experience with Dawn's mother). And also a pair of twin sisters who are just as inseparable in death as they were in life (Edmund's longing and possessive view of his sibling relationship with Dawn.) Their killing could also have serve as a heavy handed reminder that she herself is a twin.

Also: The drug dealer was cooking crack with the baby's bottles and formula, using the child as a front to do illegal activities. Much like how Bernice Mott was using children to scam the system.

Right! I'm still trying to figure out why he was targeted too. Maybe because she protected him from Mckinney but failed to protect her own brother so her brother grew jealous of her connection with the drug dealer as if she was trying to replace Edmund with the drug dealer. She had sympathy for the guy but didn't have any sympathy for Edmund when he visited her home in '98. Maybe he wanted her to feel for him they way she felt for the drug dealer, compassion 🤷🏾‍♀️

Edmund looked crazy as Hulk Hogan, with that stocking cap on his head as the killer BUT THE CRAZIST was him with the stocking cap and wig on as Donovan's mother. He looked nuts. Now why did he kill Donovan? I know Edmund was upset he didn't get the part but the other children who were killed I thought were twins, but Donovan was not. Also, that was horrible how Donovan pleaded for his life and Edmund basically chopped his head up!

I feel "scare" in the titlte meant what gave the demon power. If you recall the end scene, Dawn tells Edmund that she loves him. The demon begins to break down at that moment. I also think Edmunds comedic scenes as you call them showed how hard he was trying and how pathetic he was, how everyone saw him as a joke when he was really trying to act. It was funny at points but to me it didn't take away from the message that he felt people making fun of him and how he felt alone in the world. I do feel some characters weren't developed but there were only 8 episodes. I appreciated the story and was intrigued to see the black face guy at the end. Hoping for season 3.

I’m gonna have to respectfully disagree, I happened to mess up and watch this season first and found it to be much more “fun” to watch as well as I felt conflicted about Edmund, part of the time I thought he did an amazing job being exceedingly creepy, other times I felt sympathy for him..being able to pull that off is not easy to do! I am also a big horror fan and felt this was legitimately a good “scary serial Also, didn’t catch the Jason timeframe thing, but did appreciate the Poetic Justice (irony now that I think about that scene) part at the end!

I’ve been toying the idea of doing a video on this but we will see. And funny you said most people would’nt find it scary yet there are dozens of comments on their social media page talking about how scary it is 😂 But I agree. Definitely underdeveloped and the characters were all pretty flat. I would’ve liked more back story on the demon and how he came into Edmund’s life. Luke James definitely gave the best performance and I want to see him in more roles in horror (he was in Horror Noire, another anthology if you haven’t seen it). Honestly, I’m over Black trauma in horror. While this season wasn’t as heavy, it was enough. Great breakdown!

Hey nice video but I noticed you got something wrong around 13:40. I just wanted to comment that the reason he killed the drug dealer is because he made the baby watch just like he watched the father die while he was holding the medicine bottle and he killed the Mexican boy because they had the same story as him where the boys parents gave away his twin and kept him. All of the killings were telling their whole life story in order.

I really enjoyed this season, but I have several questions. O understand this tackled generation curses that turn into cycles. I understood the first 2 onscreen kills, but I don't understand the rest. Why kill the twin girls or Benito? Because the ghost/demon was mad or jealous. They were innocent kids. Why traumatized Kel? Because he had a good life but smoke weed? Luke James acted his butt off in this series. Great review as always Elliot! New profile, Formally lthomas
