Isn't it amazing how different York and Chester are....both started as Roman Legionary fortresses, both developed as Viking ports on rivers connecting to the sea, and both retaining their city walls. They should be identical, but they are nothing alike.

We lived in North Wales, in the 80's- mid 90's, so Chester was our big Shopping venue. It's great and I love the Cathedral, in particular. We left to live in York. THAT is such a stunning place, way more lovely than Chester, with the Minster, Shambles, and many historic buildings and Churches.( in my personal opinion ) We loved it there. Then we emigrated and have lived in 3 Countries since. We do plan to visit York again, next year, and I'm so excited. It's not to be missed.!! If you must choose between one City or the other, I'd recommend York. Sorry Chester!!

By the way, the Welsh name for Chester is Caer, which means a Roman fort town. So in Wales you have other places that had Roman forts such as Caernarfon and Caergybi. The English name for Caergybi is Holyhead. It has surviving Roman fort with a medieval church built inside the walls. The church is named after St Cybi, a 6th century saint who established a monastery there and was one of the saints that spread Christianity through Wales.

I'm a member of Chester Archaeological Society and participated in some of the more recent excavations of the amphitheatre. It was built as an amphitheatre and used for executions, beast hunts and gladiatorial combats, but appears to have fallen into disuse and became a city dump for a while. In Anglo-Saxon times it may have been turned into a fortification, like the Amphitheatre at Arles in France, by Aethelflaed daughter of Alfred the Great and Lady (Queen) of Mercia.

such a great project to be involved in - as a cestrian i have loved walking round the amphitheatre since i was a kid. We used to play in there when i was really small, and now it's so great that it has been protected and has more information around the site about it. i remember the arguments a some years ago about the buildings and car park covering the other half of the site - it would have been really nice to have got underneath them but i guess it was never going to happen.

I’ve been visiting Chester ever since I can remember. As a young person I lived a short drive away, and even when I lived further off, I often visited relatives who lived nearby. Now I live fairly close and visit it just for a ‘day out’. There’s so much history there, it’s a real experience. The ‘rows’ (that’s what they call the two tiers of shops) are great in wet weather - you can wander round the shops & not get wet. Glad you liked it. If you get the chance, visit the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, London. It’s a spectacular place. It was built in 1696. I used to work there sometimes & took some American visitors round on one occasion - they asked when it was built & I told them. Their leader turned to the others in the party and said - “this was built before we were a country!” We in the UK forget our history sometimes. There’s a castle in walking distance from where I live that was built in 1295. It’s still someone’s home, which is pretty amazing when you think about it. The local church was built in 1163. We’re surrounded by ancient history!

Chester, where my Dad’s family came from, happy memories of many childhood visits. Glad you good folk appreciated how uniquely lovely it is, not many US visitors put it on their itinerary. My memorable school trip was to Normandy near Omaha Beach in 1966, 22 years after D-Day, and there were still fortifications to see, shellholes, etc, brought our history lessons into focus a little!

This made me so homesick. From my classroom when I was 12 (and again at 14) I could see the dentists building, not sure if it was a dentist then - 52 years ago, and the inscription 'the fear of the Lord is a fountain of life,' is burnt into my brain from the hours I spent staring out of the window watching the tourists. From the next classroom I was in, from age 13 and then again from 15-16, we looked out over where they were working in the amphitheatre. It's amazing I ever learned anything. We used to do our cross country run past St John's church and in and around Grosvenor Park. I remember There used to be lots of swans on the river so we always took bread to feed them and I remember a brass band playing in the bandstand in the Groves. The city has changed a lot since then. Thank you for taking me back.

I'm from Massachusetts and our 8th grade school trip was a visit to Boston to walk The Freedom Trail. It took us to Paul Revere's house, Boston Harbor, Faneuil Hall, the graveyard where so many involved in getting the Revolution started are buried. We had read Johnny Tremain which is a story about a fictional boy who was a silversmith apprentice and watches the whole thing get planned and eventually gets involved himself. And seeing all of those places in the book and knowing that they're real and a big part of history was really awesome. I was that nerdy girl on the trip thoroughly engrossed and in awe of it all. Loved every moment.

(I'm lucky to live less than an hour away). Last time I went into the cathedral they had on display part of an original handwritten manuscript by the 18th. century composer Handel. He was waiting for a boat to Dublin, to conduct the first ever performance of 'Messiah' (Liverpool didn't really exist then and Chester was the main port for Irish crossings. He was still doing last minute rewrites whilst travelling) Chester has a great zoo btw.

Another trip was to Hall i'th'Wood in Bolton, a mediaeval hall which was also the home of Samuel Crompton, inventor of the spinning mule which helped start the Industrial Revolution. We must have done at least one trip every year; British kids don't realise how lucky we are that we are surrounded by history and it's often only a short ride away.

We loved this guys. Chester is our local city and you did it proud. Glad you enjoyed exploring the rows. The steps up to them are pretty steep! We enjoyed the boat trip and the wall walk. Great job 🍻

As an 8 Yr old our class visited Stoke bardolf, a sewage plant. Yep that exciting. A donkey ate the button off my brand new coat. I spent the whole day worrying ( needlessly) that I would get into trouble at home. We ate tomatoes, then they told us it's what had been growing naturally at the banks of sewage inlet. Yes the seeds of those plants had passed through the human digestive process.

I have lived in Chester since I was 7 years old, I’ve always loved it here. I used to work in town, just up the road from the Amphitheatre, and in the summer months I always took a packed lunch to work with me, and on my lunch hour I used to sit and eat it there in the amphitheatre and enjoy watching the everyone fascinated by it 👍

Chester is one of those oft overlooked foci of British history. One of the most remote of Roman legionary forts in the Empire, the military capital of Mercia during King Alfred's daughter's reign there, a military centre for the northern Marches, and the home of St John's Church which was founded in the 600s, this city is a gem. As for school trips: whilst a young boy in Kenya, the most memorable school trip when I was eight was to the Fort Jesus in Mombasa, which dates from the 1590s; during my six yrs at choir school in London we visited lots of places on singing tours, but the two which stand out to me are the Hermitage in St Petersburg (Leningrad when we were there) and singing at the 6th Century Llanrhychwyn church in Wales. During Senior School in Cape Town I well remember our visit to Isandlwana battlefield, and being the first multi-ethnic school choir to sing in Khayelitsha Township (this was during Apartheid.

Isnt it interesting how such an ancient piece of functional architecture like the Chester amphitheatre is right next to a modern road and people can just walk their dogs through it. No gates, no entrance fees. Just a piece of such interesting history, truly accessible to all. Fantastic! I've visited Chester several times, we really enjoy the architecture and the park full of squirrels!

So much to say about this! Firstly well done on visiting Chester - its way more interesting than a lot of places people visit. I didn't see any footage of the cathedral so when you come back that's somewhere you need to visit. The Queen's park area is where I was educated; it has schools and a college as well as an army base (or at least there used to be!). I was captivated from start to end, made my day so thanks for that. 🙂

I grew up in North Wales so Chester was always our big day out shopping place, and then when I got older a great place to go for the nightlife too, I always loved the architecture and just general feel of the place, I'd highly recommend you visit Brighton, I lived there for 10 years and you'd love the old shopping area they have called 'The Lanes' it's just a bunch of narrow cobbled streets with so many amazing shops, you can spend days there looking around, and there's loads of amazing bars and places to eat too, it's a bit of a party town (now a city) and one of their tourism slogans used to be you can go to a different pub everyday for a year in Brighton and Hove.

I live here over 30 years now. I walk in there to do my 10;000 steps /day. From where I live (over a mile away) the walk to and from including the full circular wall is still under 10,000. So blessed to live and be settled in this beautiful city.

Where I worked, we would take secondary school students ( between 11 and 16) to Beamish Museum here in the north east. As a kid myself, I remember doing a day trip to Boulogne-sur-Mer in France as a 14 year old from an English grammar school and you were left to your own devices to wander around. Great day and a totally different time.
