When I was 7 years old my Dad went to a NYC auction and purchased an old NYFD truck and brought it to our farm on Long Island. I became the most popular kid in grade school. It still worked and we hade some of the old fire hose and a nozzle that we connected to it. I won all the water fights! I am 71 now and would do it again in a heartbeat!

Its sad to see these once proud rigs just sitting here without a job. Its nice to know that other departments will buy them, and whenever I'm in NYC and I see a rig with duct tape numbers, it kinda makes me happy that an old rig is getting some use again. I wish I could buy a couple of these things but they're probably way too much money. It would be cool to have a truck and squad rig

tjisatotalsellout YES, I HEAR YA MY FRIEND! BUT MOST OF THESE GET SECOND AND THIRD LIVES AND GO ON TO SERVE FOR DECADES AFTER! A LOT OF THEM STAY IN NEW YORK CITY AND SERVE AS SPARES FOR A VERY LONG TIME AS WELL! THANKS SO MUCH MY FRIEND AND HAPPY THANKSGIVING! ;o)

I love going to NYC. Seeing everything it has, One World Trade, Empire State Building, University of New York City (I think), Liberty Island. But what I come for mostly is to see New York's Bravest and their trucks. Love them so much.

Here in South Central PA quite a few fire departments have bought used FDNY rigs - mostly engines - over the years and refurbished them, especially during the 80s & 90s. Not sure if thats still cost effective versus buying a new rig. The IAFF labor agreement requires rigs to be replaced after so many years for safety purposes... I believe it's 10 yrs. Since FDNY is "the busiest fire department in the world", even well maintained, heavy duty apparatus, operated by professional takes a beating.

And I hear from my friends dad who works on the department we may be getting one of these old rigs to replace it. Would be awesome to have an FDNY engine up in Maine

Fire trucks go on for years due to the strong build and cost, they would prob be marked up and given a new life in a smaller city station across the states. Here in the uk old appliances are sold to other places or they get purchased for private work or even donated to third world countries.
