@@trvman1 They have these fires more often than you think. You notice not even ConED has masks on. So maybe isn't as toxic as you think and since FDNY has a wonderful HAZMAT team and decon units I'm sure if it was an issue what you think you're seeing would be handled differently.

Morning John, Don't see any videos for a few days, now three in one day!! they're keeping you busy. Over here, in a little town about 20 miles from here, they had a warehouse fire, the building had 200,000 lbs. of lithium batteries in it. 3,000 people evacuated, for 4 days!! They couldn't put it out with water or foam. The first crews started to water it down, only to cause explosions of the batteries. They used portland cement to finally get it under control!! Usually a fire in an underground electrical vault is in the transmission/distribution line insulation, so water can be used to put it out. Here it appears that the fire reached the transformer oil (usually mineral oil) so foam was required. Back a few years PCB was the transformer "oil" of choice because it was non-flammable. However, PCB is also toxic and environmentally destructive, so it is being phased out.

Great clip on the vault fire in Manhattan-John! Just so everyone understands? The people in the dark blue shirts are supervisors with or without traffic vests. The dead give a way is they don’t have dirt on their uniform. The people in the light blue shirts are the actual workers. They are the ones that hopefully know what their doing? The dark blue shirted ones? Not so much. ConEd uses Cintas for their uniforms. They are HOT & uncomfortable to wear in the summer time & cold & drafty in the winter time. Cintas clothing bunches up in the summer when the fabric binds to sweaty arms & legs. They restrict movement too. They are THE WORST clothes to wear IMHO. They bought them strictly because of their bomb proof qualities. Rather than on the day to day safety of their workers.

Most department do not like to use foam. It works great they call it wet water, the draw back is the foam is a known carcinogen. Brief contact posses no issues but constant exposures could have health concerns for firefighters. FYI thanks for great footage

Underground vault fires seem to be kinda common in NYC... I guess if it's not the salty runoff shorting everything out its overloading and heat in summer.

Wow, a foam unit in action. I watch FDNY fighting a gasoline fire from the riots a year ago. Just water, lit up three more vehicles from the flames spreading downstream. They really could have used foam. These days most foam use is banned for environmental reason. Probably allowed since it would been confined to the transformation value. Typing as I am watching, wondering if HAZMAT will be showing up to cleanup the foam. Do you happen toknow what kind of foam they used. All the foam I am familiar with has been banned.

I'm guessing they must be using more environmentally friendly foam these days especially after watching them hose the street down. I noted your closeup of the cans used for the foam, couldn't read anything useful. Foam is a wonderful thing. As for the riot video, the rioters where gone. One can only guess the reason for not using foam. Thanks for the reply and the videos too.

@@timstack88 Those bands have been around for as long as I can remember. I carried 2 sections of wood on my helmet at all times. We actually called the pieces of wood sprinkler wedges. If you were in a room where the automatic sprinkler had opened you could shove a wedge in and stop the flow. Also used to chock open doors.

Co2 does not work in a space that's not confined, it will stop something actually burning but you'd need a ton of it to cool down the equipment that was on fire, a transformer or electrical line having caught fire is incredibly hot and you don't just cool it with gas, because the hot air will rise and suck oxygen rich air back into the transformer vault. It's in a way the same but completely different you see a lot of people do when trying to extinguish a car fire with a Co2 cannister: they stop firing the co2 on the fire when they stop seeing flames, while, instead, you need to keep bathing the equipment (whatever it was) in co2 for as long as possible because what was burning will probably be red-hot and self-ignite when you stop (which is a lot of times the thing you see happening, they stop and a few seconds after: *bwoomp*.)

thats the wettest worse foam iv'e ever seen, plus running foam through a adjustable nozzle? i doubt they ever train with that, little had to dry it up in that configuration. they should have a CAFS system. figuring NYFD probably has the best of everything already.
