As mentioned by other readers the load should have been dumped. The problem here is the driver waited too long to dump. With all the garbage truck fires I ever fought the best results were with a dumped load. You can see the issue is hydraulic since as the hopper section started to rise it goes up a little and then falls as the system fails After members cut in they still could not pull anything out because a modern garbage truck can pack 1000 lbs. or more into one cubic yard of space. This truck normally dumps with an front mounted ejector plate that pushes the load out the back. The driver attempted to push the load out of the hole the members cut but the truck could not build pressure due to failed hydraulics. Fortunately this truck is repairable. A new truck like this is a 300 to 400 k investment. So if any garbage route drivers are watching dump as quickly as you can once you determine there’s a fire in the body. I have seen these go until the entire truck is destroyed.

I AGREE AND APPRECIATE ALL THE GREAT AND EDUCATIONAL INFORMATION YOU ALWAYS PROVIDE THOMAS! THANKS SO VERY MUCH.....
@DasArab3 жыл бұрын
The problem I see was they opened the rear of the truck a full two minutes before the lines were even charged with water. This allowed air in and the fire to breath, then it burnt through a hydraulic line. If they had waited till the water was good to go this most likely would never have happened.
@dodgeme1986truck Жыл бұрын
The training the driver should have had teaches them the procedure is pack it... pack it... pack it... Get to the closest clear area then immediately eject the load call for fire department while packing the load. The packing reduces the air in the load causing it to smolder instead of burn allowing more time to get to a safe spot to eject and upon starting ejecting eject as fast as the truck can and get the truck clear.

I have the utmost respect for firefighters be they full time paid or part time volunteers and rarely critizise what they do but I can't help thinking that this was a very expensive cock up from start to finish. The hydraulics were probably burnt out by the flames on them while the back was open all that time while they got the water sorted. Surely with so little sign of fire apart from the wisp of smoke after they had got the water on the fire and the back had closed back up they could have got the rubbish truck to somewhere more open and brought in a big digger or shovel or forklift and lifted the back up as I've seen fire departments do in other videos on KZfaq and empty it that way. That would have surely been a much cheaper alternative to cutting the whole thing open in the sides. I noticed, unusually for FDNY, there were no senior officers in attendance. Maybe if there had been the whole episode would have been dealt with differently. And I am in England and our firefighters do things differently to your guys as well!

What the hell is this, Explorer Day? #1 don't EVER fucking open them without water already on/under them. #2 If you have to cut for access because they won't open, cut down in from the top, you don't need a door, just slots. #3 if you're wanting to access all of the fire, get close to the hole in the side and aim up so that the blast hitting the top inside sprays it all around. Two fails and an ignorance. Same rules as with structure, hit the ceiling.

Maji, the same thing just happened in MN. But that was a semi truck of scrap metal, burning. I said dump the load out. First fire truck pulled up, fire kept burning, second truck, they get a line over a fence, and eventually the driver and the FD figured out, dump it. But the video shows a State trooper hurrying to get in his car, and somehow, someway, some goes around the sign truck and another vehicle blocking the road. You would think, nobody could, it'd be impossible, but how in the H_ll do people not see all the cars stopped, the vehicles with flashing lights, a sign truck, and yet, someone always gets around them? The S.P. said you may want to get behind them before he starts writing tckets and confiscates the mans DL.

Would it have been an option to just drive it to an open lot or drive it somewhere to dump the load and then extinguish the fire?

YES, BUT THE HYDRAULICS FAILED SADLY.....THANKS SO MUCH.....

Drive a garbage truck on fire through Manhattan ?
@dodgeme1986truck Жыл бұрын
@@treypz you'd be surprised there is a proper technique to get you to a safe spot to dump the load starting with packing the load multiple times this causes the fire to smolder instead of burning by reducing oxygen content in the compactor then get to a safe unloading spot and as fast as you can offload the truck and move the truck away
@f0rumrr3 жыл бұрын
Should have just dumped the load immediately, for the hydraulics failed and had to cut open its belly.

THE HYDRAULICS WERE GONE BY THEN.....THANKS SO MUCH.....

Soooooo hearing protection when using cutting tools? In ten years they’ll be claiming work-related disability for hearing loss.

Really cutting a hole in a truck. Most trash trucks I know just drive to the Fire Dept and then dump the load there, saves wrecking the truck like this.

OK.

There should have been fire ports in the top of the truck for that reason the fire department is supposed to be able to hook a couple lines to the top of that compactor and basically flood it either they didn't know a out them or the body manufacturer didn't put them in

When the Refuse Truck dumps its load due to fire....who then comes to remove the rubbish. Is it the Refuse company or the Sanitation dept.
@THEMAJESTIRIUM13 жыл бұрын
IT WOULD BE THE PRIVATE CARTING COMPANY.....
@adamhenderly16023 жыл бұрын
Could've opened it on both sides to see if there's any fire on the other side. That's what we do if the hydraulics are shot.

ooh my goodness, NYCFD does not know what they were trying to cut in to, thats like trying to cut through the armor of a tank, its not going to happen. About 17 years ago all recology changed how vehicles work there are no more top loaders for recycling to prevent people from stealing from their trucks and the trash is the only one with a top load.

Is it compulsory for the FDNY to walk about with giant toothpicks at every incident
@taylors21063 жыл бұрын
They’re holding hooks and Pikes, this is so that they can drag any debris out the way or break a roof with a pike, they do other things with the tools. They don’t carry them for no reason aha 😆
