In this video, we showed you how to fix your broken items using glue and cotton, known as super glue or ca glue. Using cotton and super glue together is a much more effective and durable method than repairing using baking soda and super glue.

Ingenious, but as a cabinetmaker, I would drill out the damaged area to a specific size and glue in a wooden plug which would be sturdier and I'm certain last longer. I'm updating this post and want to say I understand Super Glue loses some of its strength over time. If this is the case, as a door is opened hundreds of times in its lifetime the glue itself may fail. However, if we are discussing European hinges as in the video, the hole itself adds structure to the mounting of the hinge.

Wooden plug in particleboard is poor at best. Super glue gets deep into the particleboard. So the cotton goes rock hard. Small gouges can be fixed with baking soda and super glue. Give it a try.

Interesting. I've been a big proponent of the superglue and baking soda trick but this seems even faster for filling holes, especially those that you need to drill and/or tap.... it can take awhile to build up the baking soda/glue layers to fill a space- being able to do it with cotton and have it become a thermoplastic that can take drilling is awesome. And the floss or thread trick is brilliant.

To repair wood, I use very fine shavings. You can grind even less in a coffee grinder. It turns out a very durable and beautiful material. By the way, to speed up the curing of the glue when gluing two surfaces, breathe on one of the surfaces after applying the glue, and after connecting the surfaces, take the object to a room with high humidity, such as a bathroom. You can place the item in a moisture-proof box in which to put a container of warm water. Store any glue in the refrigerator (not freezing) in a zip bag, especially after opening, so it will last much longer. Shelf life is increased due to the fact that cold slows down the reactions in the adhesive.

I was expecting this to be about how putting super glue on cotton makes smoke or even fire. It's probably dry enough in this video. But cotton can absorb moisture from the air, and the moisture causes the super-glue to react very fast and release a lot of heat leading to smoke or even fire. So be careful when doing this.

Not gonna lie... I came in sceptical, then liked and subscribed. I've done 50,000 fixes of exactly the same problems with perfectly good, long-term results, but few were as fast and simple as this. I'll use other methods for expensive items. But broken old kitchen cabinetry that you know you want to replace soon, and particularly plastic (which I usually fix by drilling a pattern of holes then "sewing" in cable-ties) ... this method will be my new go-to. If I can fix these in 5 seconds without drilling out and fashioning plugs to fit, I'm happy.

Great tips, being an avid backpacker years ago, my must take was superglue and light nylon twine used to lay out chalk lines, makes great repairs just wrap around and glue in place BUT sunlight will degrade it, also medical stretch self-sticking bandage wrap used for wound care, wrap around anything epoxy or superglue for rock solid fix, when hiking I used superglue mostly for wound care, what it was originally designed for, clean out cut, let dry, add sugar or honey inside cut then place little bit glue on one edge of cut and fold over other side to seal instantly sugar inside, also for abrasions blisters, drain blister after making small cut on edge then fill blister w super glue, squeeze out glue then press flat, back on trail and healing ~

I personallybuse superglue on the black nylon tape or anything that's nylon (like a thread); but one should be cautious because the glue makes it burn, increase its temperature, and releases eye-burning smoke. I also use super glue on polysterene, It actually disolves it; it's effective to rebuild missing plastic bits in devices & such, consider it like manual 3D printer.

This works because "Super Glue'/"Krazy Glue"/CA Glue is cyanoacrylate. When it dries, it's literally forming acrylic polymers. Give it a nice absorbent matrix, like sawdust or cotton fibers in which it can hold itself, and you're basically forming acrylic exactly where you need it. Acrylic plastic is definitely strong enough to be sanded, drilled, and otherwise treated as a hard plastic.

Nifty! For the smaller holes you could just use a bunch of toothpicks shoved in the hole to fill it. That gives the screw something to bite. I've never seen this cotton and super glue trick. Need to remember that! Brilliant!

Cotton Fibers is a form of wood product. I like superglue but rarely use it. I’ll definitely use this method but also incorporate cotton, sawdust and PL glue or the age old polyurethane glue that’s now called Gorilla Glue to the mix and make it more flexible. Thanks for this and all these KZfaq ideas I learn and experiment on to improve these ideas.

These are great. Thank you for the ideas. I have always had trouble bonding plastic screw holes. How does the cotton/super glue compare to wood filler? If anything it's good to know that I can do a repair with something so inexpensive and common. Thank you again.

I adapt things quickly and see many uses for this in some of my projects. Also seen wood glue and wood dust used a fillers to match the same wood worked with so it match the color. I think a combo of loctite gel superglue on the outer rim with cotton then the liquid super glue would be just slightly better as the gel hardens in a chunk and might hold on to the wall sides better. I guess this will take some tests.

Be careful mixing different types of adhesives, even from the same company. Some can create very flammable or caustic materials when mixed, and in some cases they can even spontaneously combust.
@MildarValsik

@@LabGecko yeah I was thinking about that. Normally never mix mix things. My meaning was something that kind of separation between the two. If I was going to "mix" it be in some kind of controlled way.

DIY fiberglass basically. Nice for smaller detail repairs, but by volume superglue isnt very cheap. I think a strip of thin medical gauze or similar material would work better than the string

Well before superglue and poly string people mended tool handles with tightly wound waxed cotton or fine jute twine and rendered glue. Those repairs on shovels, picks. brooms, garden tools etc., lasted for years. They also used the same technique to make hand grips on knives, tools and kitchen utensils.

What is rendered glue
@TheStigma
@TheStigma Жыл бұрын
@@Farmgal51 Oldschool glue was made from rendering (seperating via heat) animal tissues. Im not sure exactly what the composition was, but some mix of fats and collagen probably (a natural tissue-binding substance) I suspect. you can probably find the details on wiki. If you've ever heard someone joke about sending someone/something to the glue factory thats because it was a real thing that happened to work animals like horses once they were too old or sick to be useful. Pretty gruesome stuff, but back in the old days they didn't let things go to waste.
