Part one of my exclusive interview with Master Yap Boh Heong discussing the authentic Nei Gong practices traditionally taught to only the most senior monks in the Southern Shaolin Temple. I'm currently working closely with Master Yap to produce a comprehensive online training program that will include the original methods and in-door teachings of Shaolin Nei Gong. The online course will be released on The Martial Man website later this year. Create a free account to ensure you're notified when the course is officially released. themartialman.com
The Martial Man is an exciting new web series following Kieren as he travels the far-east to experience traditional martial arts and learn the secret knowledge of the Grandmasters. The show offers the viewer a unique insight into the martial arts world and a front-row seat to learn directly from the masters.

It's always so engaging when Master Yap Boh Heong speaks. So much knowledge flowing out. I am thankful The Martial Man is there soaking it up and sharing with us. Hopefully Master Yap Boh Heong can transmit his lineage of Wu Mei to enough people to guard it from being lost in obscurity. I imagine it's an interesting challenge finding people who are ready or open to begin and complete a PhD level martial art.

Your channel is gold. I love to hear teachings from real masters who have a deeper insight into this art. Modern martial arts only touch the surface of human abilities. It seems to me that this is an expression of the material world view. That's why I'm glad that different masters keep demonstrating and teaching their skills, so that the knowledge doesn't get lost and maybe even becomes more and more popular. Thanks!

Learn Yan Shou Gong online from Master Yap Boh Heong. Click on the links below to enroll: YSG Sets 1-6: bit.ly/3K9w9AC YSG Sets 7-12: bit.ly/3ctj5dg Yan Shou Gong 延壽功 is an Authentic Nei Gong practice traditionally taught to only the most senior monks in the Southern Shaolin Temple. Each of the Yan Shou Gong sets condenses the best practices of the Nei Gong arts, making them: • Easy to learn. • Quick to practice. • Produce real internal skills. Many types of Nei/Qi Gong practices typically take years before a student feels any benefits from the training; Or even worse, the methods don’t produce any results. However, this is not the case with Yan Shou Gong, as the student will notice the benefits instantly, and in most instances, it can begin to deliver results within weeks. Yan Shou Gong also emphasizes the development of kinetic energy and the mind; in Chinese martial arts, these terms are referred to as Jin 勁 and Yi 意. It also teaches the practitioner how to perform techniques such as Grounding, Rooting, and Centering, creating awareness and mindfulness of being in the body. This can improve a practitioner’s martial abilities, but it can also help relieve stress, anxiety, and depression. The comprehensive instruction provided in this course is ideal for martial artists who want to study an authentic Nei Gong system/internal art. It is also suitable for those who have previously been too busy, living a stressed-out lifestyle, and now need to work on improving their health. Inner-door Students Group: As well as the comprehensive video instruction provided within the course, Master Yap has created a private group to personally guide students studying the Yan Shou Gong (Shaolin Nei Gong) course with him. Access to the group is exclusive and only available to students who enroll in this course. Students can use the group to ask questions, discuss the video lessons and share their training experiences with the other pupils. Master Yap will be on hand to answer any questions and share new video lessons with the group. Click on the link to find out more: bit.ly/3K9w9AC

Christian monasteries in Europe were quite similar. They also become universities within their communities. Also, a lot of retired soldiers would also gather at monasteries to learn religion and philosophy, and they would also setup fencing clubs; which is not that different from how Shaolin and Wudang evolved into kungfu schools. Mind and body are two sides of the same coin. So, what is termed as internal training might simply be psychological; likewise external training is physical. And when mind and body is co-ordinated, spirit (精神) is developed.
@bohhyap7379

Thank you for your feedback. I totally agree with you. Religious institutions/monasteries of any type, has always been the earliest repositories of knowledge and learning. And in the earlier times this knowledge extended beyond theology, and included the healing in the natural sciences. I am sure a similar thing to Shaolin existed in Weatern monasteries, in the past; but the difference is Shaolin thrived and survived to this day, despite multiple destruction. It evolved and developed. It had 2000 years of what would now be called R&D, give a few centuries. That is an achievement that, alas, did not happen in the West. I also agree with you that the 'trinity' of body, mind and spirit is a natural and important one. And for the development of full human potential, you require all three. The martial arts is important not just for the physical aspects, it also teaches perseverance and discipline. And let's not forget it's learning to understand and deal with violence. A well disciplined martial artist will never resort to violence as the first option, however will use violence without hesitation if it's a suggest course. This familiarity with violence als teaches one to remain calm and still, not be triggered by the Monkey mind for fight or flight, but to stay calm and deal with the situation using teason and the cognitive brain. So to learn how to refrain from and manage violence, one has to understand violence. This is also about the philosophy of Ying and Yang, of finding balance and harmony between opposites. I however disagree that the 'Internal Training is just psychological'. In fact I believe it's a combination of all three, physical, mental and spiritual. As any serious practitioner knows, one can certainly feel it's physical effects, find joy in the stillness and calmness that it brings… and feel the 'connectedness' with ones environment, living or natural. It is real and can be felt and experienced by those that practice. To us it's very real. To say it's just psychological, is to diminish it for those who practice it… I think that was not your intention ;-)

He is talking about training in zhan zhuang and holding the tree with pressure testing. Very simple but it needs training. Sink the hips, 6 directions etc. This should be the basic few years of training in many arts. All yiquan, taichi, hsingyi and bagua ppl do this, I think.

Sun Lu Tang, when he started learning Hebei Xing Yi, his teacher made him stand in San Ti Shi for one year, refusing to teach him anything else. Throughout this period, his teacher would walk up and push/move/slap him to see where his student was in San Ti. One day, the teacher crept up behind Sun Lu Tang, slapping him on the back. Sun Lu Tang, unmoved, rooted, was the signal his teacher was looking for. After this, he began training Sun Lu Tang in Xing Yi Quan.

Hi, Master Yap will produce future courses to provide instruction on the remaining sets of Yan Shou Gong. This first course covers sets 1-6 and should take a student 6-12 months to work through all the video lessons, practice diligently and become proficient. The next course, which we are currently working on, will provide detailed instruction on Yan Shou Gong sets 7-12. Eventually, detailed instruction will be available for all 36 sets of Yan Shou Gong on this website. The course is suitable for everyone regardless of their current level or experience. Kind regards, Kieren.

These guys are all the same...always with the academic stuff about CHi and or showing things standing straight up in non-realistic static situations or through drills that dont have body mass involved. Perhaps show this on someone that boxes ? I would like to see it in real fighting and a realistic situation . So the question here is what is he trying to say? this is used for some reason in self defence ? if so lets see it for real..he seems like a nice man in spirit but this has nothing to do with martial arts he just seems like a nice man. Not picking on him per say but rather the hoky things he has been taught and now he is passing on giving people falsehoods on fighting skills. But not sure what this has to do with self defence...if so it would be nice to see these guys prove it in real action taking on a punch that has body mass that is going right through the defender..not just a light slow mime like arm movement stopping in front of the person at about 0.0 speed and power. The latter seems to be the platform on which most of the magical masters seem to teach their hoky theories. I wish this nonsense would stop in martial arts.
