During a special chapel at The Master's Seminary, Austin Duncan moderated a panel Q&A where Dr. Thomas Schreiner, Dr. Derek Thomas, Dr. Steve Lawson, and Dr. Andy Naselli discussed topics including Christian nationalism, historical theology, and navigating theological controversy.
ABOUT TMS:
The Master’s Seminary exists to train men for pastoral ministry-to preach the Word of God, reach the world for Christ, and teach others to do the same. The Master's Seminary was founded in 1986 by John MacArthur, who now serves as chancellor of TMUS.

I was a pastor for 20+ years in three different churches and none of them wanted a theologian or anything close to a pastor-scholar/teacher. They were all satisfied with having their ears tickled.

I've been in the ministry now for over 24 years and I can attest to the sad reality that most churches & church goer's can't even handle deeper theology. I teach using verse by verse exposition & some thematic preaching as well. My experience has been that most congregations still need to be fed milk and can't handle the meat of deeper truths. Christian's really need to stop making Pastors the scapegoat for their poor spiritual health. You an an individual Christ follower have the responsibility to study and drink from the depths of Holy Scripture. I'm finally but thankfully at a Bible believing church that loves the teaching & preaching of God's Word. Most of our people actually bring their Bibles to church. Imagine that. 😂😊.

An excellent discussion. We tend to bring new interpretations to the Word of God not thinking that these things have been thought through by men as Godly as we are, and maybe more so, for 2,000 years. The problem arises when we almost always go back to one segment of the Reformation in our historical theology (with the exception of Augustine since Calvin uses him exclusively), and not to others. We throw in, "oh, and of course, Scripture" so we appear biblical when our primary thought sources are human. I know all of the panelists are reformed, but Lawson's "ah hah" moment in seminary was almost salvific when he talked about the "doctrines of grace." An honest theologian must admit that there is one doctrine of grace which is manifested in countless ways. Limiting it to five serves the "system" and not Holy Scripture. He was excellent, however, on original sin.

I'm sure that is true for the most part, but I have heard him call those who do not part their hair exactly as he does theologically, heretics and unbiblical. Far better to say that you do not agree with their interpretation of that passage than to label them as practically outside the faith.@@trh1493

This time they all seemed to have difficulty finding words and struggled to express themselves, and it became quite unclear what they really wanted to say. Nor did they seem particularly alert and engaged. Perhaps they were a bit tired and drowsy after a hearty evening meal? But we all have our slumps. They will surely come back next time, God bless them!

According to Lawson, once you're not a full-blown Calvinist anymore, then you're on the way to apostasy.

Loosening a grip on sound doctrine is much more likely to result in slipping off completely than someone who holds on firmly. Not a 100% certainty but generally more likely.
@SimonDMal
@SimonDMal 4 ай бұрын
@@tomh3721 I understand, but making 5-point Calvinism the standard of truth used to measure the likelihood of apostasy is far-fetched. In fact, thousands of orthodox evangelical Christians adhered to an Arminian view and did not end up in apostasy from the general tenets of the Reformation. I have yet to be convinced that, historically, there is a causal relationship between abandoning 5-point Calvinism and apostasy from the evangelical faith. Of course, my argument presumes that we both agree that reformed Arminianism and reformed Calvinism are to be considered within the boundaries of evangelical orthodoxy.

@@SimonDMal I’m not in disagreement with most of what you’re saying or Lawson to be honest I think not holding to confessional Christianity is the problem. Without those safeguards for doctrine almost all churches end up abandoning reformed orthodoxy, though I will add I don’t believe arminians are in any sense reformed

We see the father in Jesus because he has been with God for untold millions of years and is the first born of creation, that's why Jesus could say that, exactly like someone might say you look, sound, talk and act like your father but is not the father

@@gytmarv123 thanks for your reply, that scripture is more evidence of Jesus's position in relation to his creator, God, he (Jesus) is a mighty God not the almighty God, there other gods referred to in the scriptures, for instance read 2Corinthians 4 v 4, Jesus himself also referred to this god as the world ruler John 14 v 30; 1John 5 v 19; in other places in the bible idols are called gods. He is called the eternal father because he has been given the authority to resurrect the dead Matthew 28 v 18; the prince of peace again shows his position in relation to God, a prince is the son of a king.
