Effective exposition is marked by clarity. Because God's Word is clear, preachers should prioritize clarity in the pulpit. So how do preachers know if they are communicating clearly? And how do they improve in this area? Get practical help from T. David Gordon, professor at Grove City College and author of Why Johnny Can't Preach.
ABOUT TMS:
The Master’s Seminary exists to train men for pastoral ministry-to preach the Word of God, reach the world for Christ, and teach others to do the same. The Master's Seminary was founded in 1986 by John MacArthur, who now serves as chancellor of TMUS.

“It’s a sin to bore people with the Bible.” - Howard Hendricks
@dpastor6631

Well, I hope we realize that in our flesh much of what people considering "boring" about the Bible is actually the unbelief and impatience of our own hearts. The Bible is not given for entertainment purposes, but to instruct God's people. Many people, even many who claim to be Christians, do not have ears to hear - and they confuse their own spiritual lethargy for "boredom" in the preaching...such that one with ears to hear may be thrilled at the same sermon that bores one whose flesh is getting in the way of hearing. Now, we don't want to preach Scripture in a dry, detached manner, for true preaching is "logic on fire" as Lloyd-Jones said. A rich study of the text and careful faithful exposition will produce a rich diet for any true believer - but the propensity of our fleshliness is to find the Scriptures "boring" - and only God the Holy Spirit can change that disposition. We don't want to use artificial hyped up methods which appeal to man's flesh causing artificial excitement. Real delight in the Word must come by the Spirit. In other words, "boredom" is often the fault of the listener.

@@dpastor6631 🙂If you knew anything about Hendricks, you would know that is not what he meant. He had a very high view of Scripture. There is NOtHING boring in or about the Bible. He would tell his students, whether he was training them to teach Sunday School, or teaching his seminary students hermeneutics, “It is a sin to bore people with the Bible,” to emphasize the importance of proper, exhaustive preparation, and a presentation that is commensurate with the majesty of the Word.

When exegetical preaching is not employed: 1. Usurps the authority of God over the mind/soul in the message. 2. Usurps the Lordship of Christ over His Church. 3. Hinders the work of the HS. 4. Demonstrates pride & lack of submission to the Word of God 5. Severs the preacher from sanctifying work of the Scriptures 6. Removes spiritual depth & transcendence from the flock & cripples worship. 7. Prevent presenting the mind of Christ. 8. Deprecates by example the duty & priority of personal bible study.

I say this about my pastor when it comes to boting preaching. He could say his message without saying so much. About 40% of his talking are musings and belaboring his points. He makes it a point to say the service isn't about a time and proceeds to talk an extra 30 minutes. I pray for him. He isnt the best preacher or pastor but he is my brother. Its my patience for him and willingness for church fellowship that I attend. Hopefully he will grow but if he doesn't in time I will talk to him.

Don't preach, teach.

All good preaching will teach, but not all teaching is preaching. Don't say, "don't preach" for that is the same as saying, "Don't herald" or "Don't proclaim"...which is what preaching is. Preaching is to proclaim and herald with authority, the authority of the Scriptures and the God whose Scriptures they are.

Matthew 10:7, 27. I Cor. 1:23, II Tim. 4:2. Just a few. I think I’ll stick to what the Bible says and keep preaching. We must do ALL of the ministry that God ordained.

@@dpastor6631 Actually, it is. However, my issue is not the word itself, but the application of the word. I agree, good (Godly) preaching will teach but I'll be more emphatic about it. Good preaching, IS teaching. But then you've hit the proverbial nail, haven't you? Good.

@@busyone5 Please, do stick with what the Bible says. The problem is, my friends, modern English does not do justice to the word or the intent. If you think you speak the same English as that of the 1500's, you are in error. To that, add the fact that English is a very imprecise language as compared to Biblical Greek. My friends, setting aside the changes in the English language and looking at intent, it is the manner of application that is more the issue. By modern common application, preaching is to speak TO people, to deliver a message or fact. (You might tell me that preaching is to deliver a sermon. Good for you but, what is a sermon? Rabbit trail!) Teaching requires speaking WITH people as it is an exchange of ideas, thoughts, or facts for the purpose of convincing, either for or against, those one is engaged with. So, the the word CONVERSATION comes closer to the original intent. My intent is not to change the meaning of the Scripture but to illuminate it. Don't just READ the Bible, CONSUME it, DIGEST it. Tear it apart, right down to the individual words within the phrases and in the case of the Hebrew, down to the very characters. Without including a study of the original texts (and the culture of the day), one will never have the full understanding of Scripture. Taste and see, that the Lord is Good.
