In this video, Dr. Steve Lawson shares with us his perspective on this issue. He also provides a helpful solution.
ABOUT TMS:
The Master’s Seminary exists to train men for pastoral ministry-to preach the Word of God, reach the world for Christ, and teach others to do the same. The Master's Seminary was founded in 1986 by John MacArthur, who now serves as chancellor of TMUS.

As long as one has acquired a worldly education about God, that automatically diaqualifies them as true preachers. One easy way to tell a false preacher is if what they preach is from some college.

And how I would love to sit in one of your classes in the Masters’ Seminary, Dr. Lawson! Oh, not for any other purpose than to dig deep and deeper into the Holy Scripture! To discover the beauty of God‘s goodness, His mercy and justice over all the generations since Genesis - can there be a more fulfilling purpose in life than to herald God‘s intimate love-message to all of His creation? No, no, definitely not! Why? I have had the privilege of listening to „expository preaching“ for just 15 months. This has however become the richest of time in my entire life. For the LORD has opened my ears to HEAR with a „tremble“ at His word! Be encouraged all who teach, study and preach the Word with your utmost for your Highest!

Expository preaching is one way to divide the word. The accuracy comes from the Holy Spirit and the preacher’s yieldedness to the comforter. Interpretation must be subject to Holy Spirit revelation. The knowledge of the preacher is merely the character of the conduit. Error lies in relying on the mind without the spirit.

The unfaithfulness of the church during the covid tyranny drove us to find a new church and Providence brought us to one of the remnant churches which takes the whole council of God seriously and is more concerned with God's opinion than the opinions of men. I am convinced that their dedication to the sequential exposition of the word is a primary factor in that faithfulness. There is a difference between preaching from the word and preaching the word. When you let God's word set the agenda and fulfill it there is no room for men's hobby horses nor allowing culture or government to lead you around by the nose.

@lawtonfloorcovering728
@lawtonfloorcovering728 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Dave, This is an honest question that you ask. I would venture to make somewhat of a feeble attempt to to give you at least one sort of preaching that expositional preaching is not. I say this from my own experience over the years, having just come to a better understanding of this in the last few years. In times past, it would be common for me to sense or feel a leading concerning a certain message that the Lord had put on my heart. I believe this is good and right, and that the ‘preacher’ carries a certain burden on his heart concerning the church. This burden or ‘message’ is an ongoing ‘sigh and a cry’ that the Lord gifts to such called men. It has become quite common in our cavalier and ‘shoot from the hip culture’ that we live in these days, for a called man of this nature to ‘sense’ this message that has been placed in his heart, but yet not know how it is that the message is to be delivered. And so, it is quite common these days for the preacher to go to the Bible with the help of his concordance and ‘find’ some really good scriptures that back up or ‘prove’ the validity of his message. We call these ‘proof-texts’. While I wouldn’t go as far to say that this in and of itself is all bad, the problem with this method is that there are many tendencies for the ‘preacher’ to be out in front with the scriptures being used to back him up. This must be reversed. The scriptures with their context, setting and correct interpretation must lead the way and be preeminent. The tail should not wag the dog. This is backwards. The messenger must we willing to become lost in his message. The tendency for a preacher who steps into the pulpit with the scriptures following behind is that many times his hearers come away having heard the preacher, and not the scriptures. John 1:37 shows us the proper order here. ‘After speaking, they followed Jesus’. Not much of John there, the messenger was lost, or faded into the background. This, to me is the primary difference between ‘expository’ preaching, and a man, even a gifted man getting up there and speaking with the scriptures backing him up. The emphasis must be on scriptures and it’s accurate proclamation. His goal must always be for his hearers to come away having ‘heard’ the scriptures and not the man.

Glad to help James. The term "pastor" is an English translation for the Greek word ποιμήν, which can also be translated as "shepherd." This Greek noun is used in Ephesians 4:11 as part of the different offices/roles that Paul lists as having been given by Jesus to the church for leadership.

It is witnessed and recorded that "Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures" (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) AND "If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. Yes, Tim. 1 Cor. 14:26 gives us a little insight into the way the earliest believers interacted with each other in a community expression of their new understanding. “ What then, brethren? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.” In the early Church everyone was an active participant in the communal gatherings. It wasn’t a formalized ritual that they performed when they got together. Just imagine a group of like minded people who now understand a different reality than the one they had grown up with and which everyone else was participating in socially. Today’s “church” setting and format is something that has developed over 20 centuries and has been influenced by such things as the Roman Catholic Church and guys like Charles Finney, etc. Well intentioned, I’m sure but it’s no longer an organic expression of a lived out faith but, rather, a formalized set of rote procedures that has little to do with where each individual is at and has little to no eternal value nor does it address the individual needs or gifts that each believer has been presented with. I’ll give you an idea of how this hinders real bodily edification: there is a brother in our congregation (I dislike the term but that’s what it is - I would rather say “our community” but it is not at that level) who has a degree in Apolgetics. Meanwhile, I have been a believer for 48 years and have actually been used of God to lead at least 8 people to Him, all of whom are still faithful at some level, but because of the structure that has been developed over the centuries, he and I are relegated to sit in the pews while a 27 year old guy, genuine no doubt, gives the teaching. Technically, what he gives is correct but there is not the gravitas nor the depth that would come if he was coming from his experience of a number of years rather than learned hear knowledge. Does that make sense to you? Or do you need more explanation or clarification. There’s so much more but this forum is somewhat limited. Read David Wells’s book “ No Place For Truth”. It might help.

Strongly agree, the traditional tier type church structure, the three songs, a prayer and a three part sermon way of worship isn’t 1st Century Christian which was group worship, circular, equal. Traditional worship of the West borrows a lot of its form from the non Christian world, particularly the Greeks and Romans. Christ stated in John, the 4th chapter, that a day was coming when people would not worship in a designated place ( V21) and the true worshipers would worship “in spirit and in truth.” (V23-24).
