I was saddened to hear about the recent passing of a great film composer, John Barry. So, I decided to honor his legacy by playing one of his most beloved scores. This is the theme from the 1980 film "Somewhere in Time," starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. As much as I love this piece, I've never been able to play it as well as I would like. For a much more beautiful performance, check out Emile Pandolfi's rendition here: • Video
The sheet music I used for this video is a very basic version that I greatly embellished to create my own arrangement. You can find the original score that I used here:
www.musicnotes.com/sheetmusic/...
Tech Specs:
The piano sound is a Steinway D concert grand from EastWest Quantum Leap Pianos sample library.
The audio was recorded with Sonar 8.5 Producer.
The video was shot with a Kodak zi8 pocket camcorder with a fisheye lens attachment that I ordered from China.
The video was edited with Adobe Premiere Elements 7

Your playing just brought tears to my eyes. My mother loved the movie and I lost her 2 years ago. I never understood why she loved it until I watched the movie myself recently. My father died in 1989. She lived to 2011 without him and it was her way of wishing to be with him again. Her passing was very difficult for me. I think through music like this you can actually transport yourself to a different time. At least in your head. You did that for me just now. Thank-you.

My mom requested this song before cancer succumbed her. It was really sad seeing her losing her voice day by day due to her thyroid cancer. It has no sign, no warning. It happened so fast that she died after a month of illness. I always found myself in any church I came to begging and bargaining to God . I called all the saints and pray to all the God I know to save her. She was too kind and dedicated her life to me. She's not my biological mom but she raised me. I just prayed to God if she can live a little longer so I can also reciprocated everything she've done for me. "Somewhere in time", we will meet agin together mama

The story of how this came to be is in itself amazing. Jane Seymore who was a personal friend of John Barry asked him to write the theme score as a favour because there was no money in the budget to pay him. John Barry was down and depressed at the time because of his parents had passed away and so he had his parents in mind when he composed this work. It was helpful at that time for him to work on this project.

May I leave the lyric here for sing along 😊 Somewhere in time We met on timeless hills And in the evening mist we kissed And time stood still Before the dawn, we found forever Moments are timeless when I feel your caress You'll always be inside of me And I know when love is true It's always with you Somewhere in time I came to realize Love never goes Love never goes Once it has touched your heart Just like the strength of wine that's left As two lips part A taste of love will linger after I know the meaning of all that I see You'll always be inside of me And I know when love is true It's always with you Somewhere in time I came to realize Love never goes

As I get older each passing year, I can't help but think how no one has come along to compose masterpieces for movies as he has. Once the other greats of our generation (john williams, hans zimmer, howard shore, (jerry goldsmith gone), (james horner gone) passes on, the next generation of movies will not be as emotionally fulfilling to me. Rest in peace John.

This song holds a dear place in my heart. It’s kind of my mom and dad’s song... And, I as get older, I feel more and more connected with its melody, as if I belonged to it, and it belonged to me. I believe my dad showed this movie to my mom for the first time, long before me and my siblings were born, and it’s been ever since special to them. Years later, my father must’ve given mom the film’s DVD as a gift and a remembrance, which I’ve found recently and has the dedication “To X (to keep my mom’s privacy), with all my affection. I love you”.

I play bassoon in a local amateur orchestra, but many years ago, we were playing a movie theme concert (I think), and we played an arrangement of this piece. I had done some concert piano solo stuff with the conductor in years past, so she asked me to play the solo piano part. We performed in a small hall to a small audience (we were just starting out as an ensemble), but I still consider that performance one of the singular opportunities in my life. That is an absolutely perfect piece to perform. Now it's fifteen years later and I'm sixty five and I still tear up by the end.

Thank you for your comment! I updated the link in the description. It should take you to Emile Pandolfi's version now. I like his version better because it is smoother, and the rhythm is more accurate. I've always struggled with playing the proper rhythm on this song, while also keeping it free and expressive. I think Pandolfi's version strikes this balance perfectly. Plus, his has a much more "dreamlike" quality, which is how this piece is supposed to sound.
