This was basically a car crash simulator 😂 I was covered in bruises every day after a Six Flags visit with this original model. The new model is much smoother, but still absolutely crazy.

One of my core memories when I was 8, my family and I visited SFOT. I didn’t get to ride the other rollercoasters due to my size lol and I was sad about it. So almost to closing time, my dad wanted to check out the original Texas Giant. So we went and when we ask the operator if I was able to ride. They said yes, honestly I was so excited but scared. So I sit next to my dad and he holds my hand tight. As soon we get to the top hill, I remember my dad said, “are you ready?” I’m like “yes!”. After the ride ended, I couldn’t stop talking about how it was my first rollercoaster and the thrill was amazing. Thus my love for rollercoasters began…So original Texas Giant holds a special place in my heart. Because now when I’m riding rollercoasters it brings my inner child out. ❤️

tobylishus vasquez Ride it in the middle seat of the 3 seat car. It's an amazing difference. The second to last seat on the train is a surprisingly good ride. The 1st and 3rd seats of each car are over the axles, which beat the living shit out of the bottom of your seat.

I rode this in the mid 90s. It was super shaky (although not actually painful) back then. I felt the shakiness of it actually added to the ride as it felt like it was falling apart. Glad I didn’t ride it in later years - I sure it would have been brutal. On the day I was there it was in my top two rides there, top 1 for thrills, and I went in thinking it would be dull. How wrong can one person be.

I was expecting the original Tx Giant from the title of this video - it's actually the Tx Giant prior to becoming a steel coaster. This is clear by the fan curve instead of the original double up after the 3rd drop. The original was awesome. The best thing to come out of Dinn Summers IMO

God I really miss the original. This really takes me back to my childhood... as tall and as fast as Titan is, the original Texas Giant still was the big bad roller coaster of the park and it was a nice contrast to the newer, smoother Titan. Its intensity, size, roughness were all apart of its package and what made it great. Now I feel its ugly looking and its lost that allure. Not only that but because of the revisions, someone died on it. I mean wow... what did they do to one of America's classic roller coasters? The original was an award winning design and for many years was considered one of the best roller coasters in the country. There was a lot of anticipation and mystique when you waited in line for it, because you knew this coaster was going to beat you senseless. Mr. Freeze is intense as well, but you can get used to it. Same with Titan and Shockwave. It was on the only rollercoaster in SFOT that I'd get off and feel dizzy and exhausted from each and every time. That's the mark of a truly great roller coaster.
@abbabeththehamster43209 жыл бұрын
GeminiTIGER Tbh, the only coaster redoings I've preferred to the original were when Cedar Point gave Blue Streak a sky blue color (albeit before I was born, haha!) and when Carowinds repainted Ricochet green. All the other coaster repaintings/remodelings I hated.
@Dolphanatic9 жыл бұрын
GeminiTIGER How is being "beaten senseless" a good thing? Shouldn't the mark of a truly great coaster be when you can get off, saying "What a great ride!", while heading back towards the queue line? Also, the person who died was [for lack of better words] too large to be securely fastened. It had nothing to do with the revisions. If anything, it's the ride operators' fault for letting her ride. I have no idea where you got the idea that Texas Giant was as tall and as fast as Titan. The rest of your comment is just your personal opinion. Please treat it as such.
@geminitiger9579 жыл бұрын
Dolphanatic Being beaten senseless is a figure of speech, not to be taken seriously. What I was saying is that it offered a much more different experience than any other roller coaster in the park. And my opinion is obviously shared by number of enthusiasts as the original Giant was indeed an award winning design and a top 10 roller coaster for MOST of its lifetime. I didn't say it was AS tall as Titan, I was comparing and contrasting Titan with the Giant pointing put that as tall and as fast as Titan is (its best attributes), the Giant still was the better rollercoaster (meaning a roller coaster doesn't have to be tall or fast to be awesome). The woman died as a result of a loophole in the fail safes that only an operator could've stopped. It was negligence. Not because she was fat.
@Dolphanatic9 жыл бұрын
GeminiTIGER "The woman died as a result of a loophole in the fail safes that only an operator could've stopped. It was negligence." That's basically what I just said.
@skylerpowers88719 жыл бұрын
GeminiTIGER First of all, this isn't a classic. The classics are way older than this. This literally opened in the 80s. DO you consider anything from the 80s classic? Classic woodies are ones like the Coney Island Cyclone or the Knoebels Phoenix. Second of all, maybe it did provide a different experience, but not a good one. In what world is a rough roller coaster enjoyable? You should want to ride it again, not head to the nearest water fountain to take an Aspirin because you have a splitting headache. Now, it's not ugly. The red adds a nice color to the blah brown wood. And the woman didn't die because of the revisions. She was too "big" for the restraint to properly lock. The attendant said she was fine. And a sensor on the operator's control panel malfunctioned so it didn't alert them that the bar was not completely locked. They are perfectly safe though. The new version is probably much safer than the original. RMC has revised and built many coasters, all of which are amazing and incredibly safe. In the end, the accident the attendant's fault, but a sensor failed, not alerting them to the problem. SO RMC is not ruining classics, they are making painful and rough coasters that the parks were wasting money on enjoyable again. I respect your opinion and I am giving mine. I also thought I should correct your factual errors too in a bit greater detail.

the drop off the mid course brake run and the end of the ride when you drop into the structure were spectacular when this ride was new. Very frightening in the rain particularly. The visual drama of it when you crested the lift was also unrivaled in any ride i've ever been on. It got too rough toward the end though. It was too painful to be enjoyable for the last decade of its life.... I'm going to miss the original Texas Giant a great deal, but I'm looking forward to the new version.

I'm ngl my little brother and I used to try to ride in the death car when we had season passes. I understand why she passed away though. The employees didn't used to check the locks properly they would just go through the motions, and just touch it. Also most of the employees are in high-school, but they didn't properly check her seat so she flew out. The next year when we went back they double checked and really tried to see if your locks were working. They changed the lock checking policies to keep more people safe. She died because a bunch of kids were half assing their job not realizing lives were at steak.

I felt like I just got beaten to a pulp coming off the old Texas Giant. I was in extreme pain. It was so unbearably rough, far worse than Mean Streak, in my experience. All my friends also said the old Texas Giant was horrible. I much prefer the glossy smooth New Texas Giant with spectacular airtime. But that's just me. If you like rough rides, then that's perfectly fine, and you're not alone. A couple really rough woodies that still exist that I've ridden that you might enjoy are The Boss at Six Flags St Louis, and the roughest ride I've ever been on: Great American Scream Machine at Six Flags over Georgia.

I still remember waiting in line and seeing this loose giant bolt shaking everytime the car ran past overhead. And when it was my turn the bar wouldn't come down for me or something (i remember a seat belt but it may have been a bar, all I remember was something to keep me inside that seat was not working for me) and I yelled for help because it was just about to take off, the lady came over and barely got it fixed. I was like 6 or 7 but it was so terrifying. That was like 2002 or 2003. My biological dad promised me a portable CD player if I rode it my older sister's even though I was so scared. (I never got that CD player -.-) Somehow even with those two scary incidents I rode it 4 times in total 😑 I swear if I ever saw a loose piece on a ride I'd be stepping out of line and reporting it, but again I was just a little girl. It sad knowing this ride killed someone 10 years later from when I rode it.

I'm not talking about when it was new, I'm talking about just before the renovation. I actually miss that 'hit by a truck' feeling. Don't get me wrong, I like the new one... but what I would give to go back and ride the original one more time... in the rain... with my seat belt unbuckled and nothing but the lap bar.

This was a great and iconic ride, but it really needed the hybrid update. IMO, truly wooden coasters are better fit for lower level thrill rides like the Judge Roy Scream, as otherwise they get too jerky like happened with Texas Giant, kind of ruining the experience.

This was the number 1 coaster for a few years straight. I remember they stole the title from the Texas Cyclone at Astroworld. I couldnt wait to get to Dallas to ride this and when I DID, I had NEVER experienced anything like it. I hated when it was Hybriddddddd because they took away almost half the layout and the majic carpet at the end is more tame than it was before. I wish they would have left it be by using topper track and banking the curves more but did not mess with the layout. I have ridden the New One once and never got back in line. It was TOO smooth and the ending was lackluster and seemed to crawl through it.

I want to go on something more thrilling than Wooden Roller Coaster 2.

Looks amazing, much better than the new one. I've never even been on either but I'd much rather ride this.

The old ride is actually much more noisy, especially with the chain, but people will still love it

I enjoy the New Texas Giant, but I have my days where I miss the feeling of the good old wooden version of it, I don't care if you felt like you got hit by a truck afterwards, I got off and could walk with a smile on my face.

This ride was re-profiled in 2011 to a steel coaster with wood supports, so the new drops are way steeper

Rode that coaster when it first got there in 1990 in the early 2000's that thing got so ruff it hurt riding anywhere on it. I quit riding it the last 6 years before they added steel in it. I ride it now with no problem at all Great coaster.

I remember the first and only time I rode this piece of crap. It was such a rough ride, I thought my spleen was going to rupture. I had to sit down for a while afterward, because it felt like I had been worked over by police batons. It definitely ruined my whole day at Six Flags.

So grateful I got to ride this Giant cyclone build before it got nerfed with the conversion. Rode post conversion, not even close to the original's angry greatness. So far, the only conversion that has improved the ride is Six Flags Magic Mountain's conversion of Colossus which is now absurdly fantastic.

It was fun, but brutal. I love the way it is now.

You are correct. The New Texas Giant uses a hydraulic restraint system. With a system like that the train won't roll unless all the restraints give a green light.

This was an awesome version, but the upgrade was well needed.

This was my last ride I rode there. I haven't rode any rides there since around 2003, and I worked there in 2008.

I wonder how much people would be riding it if it was still like this today.
