The child actors where probably the best part of the movie, don’t get me wrong I really enjoyed the story, but the little girl in the scene where she is yelling at her dad about her dreams was amazing. Great casting to tell this story

the way finney killed the grabber is actually really cool because each thing he was told by the previous victims was implemented in some way…he tripped the grabber with the cable… grabber fell into the hole bruce told him to dig…broke the grabbers ankle with the window gate…beat the grabber with the phone like robin said… and gave the dog the meat from the freezer vance mentioned. love that.

the hardest part about abusive parents, for me at least, at the time was hating them so much while loving them more than anything. those moments of genuine love and care mixed with anger and despair really screws with your head

so the reason the kids didn’t explain more was bc the parts that they are explaining is when they got killed which is why each kid tells him something different. some of the kids didn’t last as long as others. so like the kid who told him not to go upstairs probably tried to escape and got killed, where as Vance hopper probably lasted longer.

I liked that they didn't give too much on why the grabber was kidnapping, in my opinion, it would have taken away from the character if he had motive. Enjoyed the reaction as usual!

i mean yeah its scarier when you dont explain more often. once you put it in a box its easier to understand and wrap your head around.

I mean the motive is clearly him getting sexual pleasure from beating the kid for being a "naughty boy," most likely recreating a personal childhood abusive experience from sneaking up those same stairs as a kid in that same home, it's pretty consistent with the MO's of many serial killers. It's perfect that they do not overexplain it because most of it speaks for itself, and it makes room for this great plot with all the waiting time for such a specific fantasy

I’m with you for most of it. That toilet cover is always one of the first things I think of as a weapon. That thing is heavy. Plus Finn was throwing pro level pitches, that kid can swing it.

Most of the complaints people have about the movie are the same you have, specially towards not exploring the Grabber's motives. BUT I like it that way. First off, the movie is based on a short story written by Joe Hill (Stephen King's son) and both father and son are known for not explaining too much of backstory for the supernatural stuff in their narratives (specially in short stories). And I like it because the unknown is sometimes better than explanations. We do have some hints about who is the Grabber: he is clearly a case of psychological disorder, with identity issues (He claim he isn't the one who killed the kids, and later on if you pay attention he acts differently depending on which mask and part of the mask he used). And to me the resolution is satisfying because although it dependend on Finney's journey to "stand up for himself", there was clearly a "good" supernatural force with a "geater plot" to stop the Grabber. He wouldn't get caught without Gwen's dreams, and also the key to Finney's success at the end were the little steps he took following the dead kids' instructions. EVERYTHING that he tried before paved the victory at the end: the hole on the ground, the wire, the fallen window grid, the knowledge of the locker's password and the meat in the freezer. So, Finney was actually the only one who could took him out BECAUSE he was the last one and had the information from ALL the kids before. And of course, the phone and the important information that Finn's arm is mint (strong enough to break a person's neck - a move that Robin did on the kid in the beginning, but without finishing it). So for me everything paid off at the end, even without an explanation of the supernatural mechanics and the motivations for the Grabber (which, for me, is not a problem).
@AdamRee-lx8uh
@AdamRee-lx8uh Жыл бұрын
I think they did explain about the supernatural mechanics. Both Finny and her sister have gifts that were given by their mother. Finny has the ability to see and talk to ghosts, while his sister has the ability to see visions in her dreams.

"Naughty boy" was basically saying he wanted him to be naughty to give a reason to beat him with the belt. Some pervs get a kick out of that.. Ugh. But that's why every time he wanted to do something "naughty" different victims stopped him.. (Going upstairs, etc) but another good review!!! #FreeRiiide 🥰😏

I feel the look for the Grabber in the final fight is realistic compare to his other appearance; his brother finding out but him in a rush to go downstairs, he look more casual because he was still playing the role of blending, he was to go downstairs to resolve things before he intended

This movie was great. I liked the concept. I liked Finney and the sister as a character. Ethan Hawke was amazing. I hope we get a sequel prequel so we learn more about the Grabber, because we don't know much about him. This gives me terrifier 2 vibes, not in the gore, but the supernatural elements between the siblings, of both movies.

One of my favourite horror movies of modern times. I read it as an exploration of generational trauma and abuse. For me, the black phone works as a metaphor for the extra sensory perception that abuse victims tend to develop. They specifically tuned in to read their surroundings, they can read their abuser and they can adapt their behavior in order to survive, it's like being in a constant state of alertness, very much like having psychic abilities or a sixth sense. It is strongly hinted that The Grabber was also a victim of childhood abuse, it's hinted that he was also down in the basement of the same house during childhood. From time to time, he heard the phone too. Just like an abuser may have their moments of self awareness or remorse. I believe that hearing a call from the black phone is acknowledgment and awareness of the trauma that has been passed down to you. The other boys could not hear the phone, simply because they did not have the same traumatic childhood and they weren't wired to receive the signals. The Grabber heard the phone but ignored it and eventualy stopped hearing it because he didn't acknowledge his trauma and as a result he continued the chain of abuse. Finny heard the phone. Answered the calls and learned from them, eventually using his knowledge as a weapon to overcome his abuser and free himself. The Grabbers background is mysterious but he gives us a few clues about his history. At one point the Grabber refers to Finny as Johnny. I like to think that this may be the grabber's real name. I also like to think that The Grabber may be re-enacting abuse that happened to him in his childhood home. The Grabber is constantly testing his victim, he gives Finn opportunities to defy him on order to administer punishment. The masks are also intriguing. He has a neuutral face, happy face and an unhappy face which he swaps out according to his mood. The happy face is almost playful. The unhappy face theatens violence. Learning to read the abusers face and adapt behavior is vital for abuse victims. The Grabber becomes hysterical when his mask is removed. I have a few theories as to why he wears the mask but but seems The Grabber feels comforted by having a mask which dictates his behavior, or feels more able to engage in violence and sadistic behavior if he is playing a role. I wonder if he is playing out the different sides of his own parent/guardian's personality, the playful and calmer parent vs the stern abuser in order to establish some kind of rules/logic begind their behaviour. This is pure speculation but I think it's interesting to think about the Grabber as both an abuser and a victim of abuse with unresolved trauma.

the "why" for the grabber is the same as any serial killer, we don't know why but we know he gets pleasure out of it, and from the theme of abusive parents, we can assume the grabber snuck up those same stairs and would get beaten and abused by his own parent as a kid (like most serial killers) as the "naughty boy" and recreating that in his killings, his brother ending up an addict instead, etc the signs are there and I love that they didn't spoonfeed any of it

I like it, when it’s unknown, to be honest; it makes it more mysterious. And it’s better to make theories about it than having them reveal it, because that would probably ruin it, in my opinion; in my theory, I think the grabber has multiple personalities. Anyway, you do realize it’s based on a short story by Stephen King’s son, right?

They don't delve too deep I guess because it was based on a short story that didn't address a lot of things. They could've gone deeper when deciding to make it a feature film for sure, but I guess they wanted to keep it vague like the story.

And I agree with the Grabber's final outfit, the shirt looks like he's going bowling... When I 1st heard about this movie I was excited then I heard the reception was mixed. Mostly positive, but a few people were thrown off because it was advertised as a horror film. When it's more of a psychological thriller with supernatural elements. When I finally got to see it the thumbnail on the site was of him in the "bowling shirt." And it made me hesitant to watch it. I'm glad I lowered my expectations though and knew it wasn't straight-up horror because I enjoyed it WAY more than I was expecting. The kids freaking killed it, and I can't wait to see the next one. I have no idea how they are going to continue with the story. I'm pretty sure Gwen and Finney will be returning for it, but I try not to look into things too deeply because I enjoy being surprised when going into films.

Hi. Sorry if I repeat anyone as I haven't read all the comments but my take on the grabbers motivation is childhood trauma. MPD is shown wth the different masks, he said he spent time there and heard the phone and with his last mask, he was wearing an old fashioned dad type shirt that implied his dad doing the same things. Finny's dad being an abuser might be that common ground hey had. Idk...thats what I got out of it

You know you're in for a bad day when late career Ethan Hawke rolls up in a black van 😂 Also this was a novella written by Stephen Kings son. I also do agree. I'd use the toilet lid cover rather than a phone. If it breaks, then you've got a jagged edge. Prison style shiv.

I liked this movie for the most part but would have preferred if it weren't supernatural, but rather just a straight crime drama. Like Se7en, Zodiac, and Silence of the Lambs. I don't know what they could have done differently to take the place of the supernatural elements, but that kind of took me out of it a little, once it became a ghost story of sorts. Maybe instead of receiving ghost calls on the phone, he could have just found clues from when the other victims were in there and pieced together what they did when they were in there, and the sister could have put clues together from the outside herself. I dunno. Still a good movie though.

I disagree. I didn’t see a problem with including supernatural at all. You do realize that this is based on a short story written by Stephen King’s son, right? Stephen king and his son always combines realism with supernatural, which is one of things I love about their work, so it didn’t bother me at all. Spirits talking to the kid is actually great; I like it when it’s fictional.
