Owners can readily improve 2 items mentioned in negatives: lcd screen can be set to night mode all the time (orange background) and the handlebars have a second set of mounting holes to bring them closer for enhanced comfort. I enjoy my 1290r 3.0 very much and is a big improvement over the 1.0 that I also owned.

The forward 'racy' bar position suits the bike. I've seen lots of people who have tried the 'comfort' setting going back to the original as you need the forward weight bias to manage the bike.

Unfortunately, a factory fitted Akrapovic exhaust can, won't be much louder than stock, as it has to meet the same noise/emissions requirements as stock. Better to save the money, and fit your own aftermarket can.

Nice balanced review Andy. I absolutely love mine but don’t disagree about the negative points (although I am taller and find the riding position bearable for long treks). Overall, it’s a great bike and I’d advise people to go for a cheaper Austin Racing or SC Project slip on, both of which have better sounds. Good vid 👍🏻

Hi the aggressive riding style can be changed simply by moving the bars to the closer position to you as there’s two lots of holes there to change it and if that’s no enough you can then tilt the bars up more so this gives you the same sort of riding position like the gen 2 hooligan mode 👍🏽👊🏽✊🏽

Just think if they took tips from a certain electric car company that allegedly disables such electronic add ons when the vehicle is sold to another user. Only for the new owner to have to purchase them again should they want them.
@Trevor_Austin
@Trevor_Austin 3 жыл бұрын
@@eubikedude I disagree. All of these features have been installed but disabled. Their cost of manufacture has already been taken into account. No extra components will bolted on, no additional parts added, no work required. An example of this greedy chiselling was IBM. In the 1980’s they were the biggest computer manufacturer in the world. They’d install a computer system and a year or so down the line “rent” you an upgrade. Depending on how much you paid you could quadruple the capacity of your hard-drives and cut access times down by 75%. This work consisted of removing inhibiting jumpers on control panels and an a upgrade of the O/S (which was merely inserting a few characters) to enable the “improvements” to take place. IBM are no longer the biggest computer company in the world. Their customers found better (more ethical/less unethical?) suppliers.

@@Arachnoid_of_the_underverse Absolutely. This “theft” is what aircraft manufactures do. If you want to fly it at less than minus 60ºC you must purchase it. It’s a change in the manual. Use a different towbarless tug, you purchase the change the change in the manual. The same is done for engine thrust, operating weights, take-off performance and so on. And you pay per aircraft. Thieves! And as for airlines, they are no different. Search for “If airlines sold paint”.

The thing that concerns me about "pay extra to have it enabled" means that amateur hackers are going to try and hack into the software themselves to enable stuff which could result in dangerous accidental alterations to the software. Not a sensible path to go down in my view!! Great review Andy although I still don't like the looks!1

As far as I understand the software update has to be downloaded to be installed. It's not actually on the bike. I love mine and agree with you 1000% about the slip on Akra, I specced mine with that. HAted the sound so just sold it and gone for the full Akro Evo system. Looks and sounds awesome. Trouble with that is when that is fitted (as its not a road legal system) and they upload the KTM Akra map the bike wont start if indicators are connected. Like most things there is a work around by fitting a 10 sec relay loom but we shouldn't have to do that. Having said that the Full Akra system is a complete game changer! G'Day Andy, Great Wrap up. Bought mine last October. The Handelbars can be moved back about 15 mm which really helped with the canted forward feeling, but I totally agree that the Akrapovic pipe is very disappointing, considering I paid $1500AUD. A big Thumbs Up on the correct pronunciation of the Ah-Krap-Oh-Vitch pipe this time Mr Flyer. Whilst I like that KTM focus on the high performance aspect of their bikes (something that personally appeals), the things that put me off buying one (either new or secondhand) are the numerous and well documented reliability problems they get with gearbox issues and porous crankcases, even at very low mileages. Those are most definitely not easy or cheap fixes, so I feel KTM need to get their act together on that score before bringing out the next new whiz bang model with a big price tag.

Hi Andy, Thanks for the review. I’ll be in the market to update my ride shortly and this bike was on my short list. I’m in agreement that after paying a premium price you still need to pay extra for features that are already fitted. I was surprised to hear that the riding position was slightly aggressive. I can suffer from lower back issues at times and this maybe a deal breaker. No use getting a new bike that causes discomfort. You’ve given me food for thought...thanks for enlightening me 👍. I was very much a victim of the marketing department when I bought my second gen in '18. Just had to have it, so I did. I agree on the sentiment of the electronic packages. Despite that, I bought the quickshifter and Akra mapping. The track pack is still on the list. No I don't like spending several hundred for a coded paywall, but holy hell, that quickshifter is GOOD. There's a lot of complicated tech involved in smooth downshifts. Nonetheless, I think KTM is doing themselves a disservice selling these things separately. If they were standard, they'd have a MASSIVELY strong sales argument over the competition. The grand or so that these packages cost combined probably aren't that big a deal on top of the MSRP when you look at the prices of the Tuono / SFV4S / MT10, but they DO annoy everyone when purchased separately. That same grand could be used on a stiffer steering damper or better fork internals. Areas that aren't quite as good as that absolutely bonkers addictive engine.
@lovelessissimo
@lovelessissimo 3 жыл бұрын
I understand that manufacturers are in the business of making money, but it is quite telling that they paywall an electronic code. They had to go out of their way to equip the bike with a quick shifter, then make the conscious decision to simply make it inaccessible.

Not sure if you’re aware but there are two positions for the handlebars. You have to undo the handle bar itself and move the mounts back. There are two sets of holes machined in the top yolk. KTM recommend the forward ones for racing, and which I believe is the standard factory position or you can bring them back slightly which gives you a slightly more upright riding position. I myself found the factory position too far forward. And contemplated bar risers until I stumbled upon the other handle bar position.

Coming from a sportsbike background I really like the riding position and prefer it to the gen2, you don't talk much about the handling of the bike or the quality of the WP suspension but it is a revelation and really enables you to push it particularly once set up. Switchgear? The only thing I dislike about the bike is the crap indicator switch which is far too difficult to use for what it is. VFM? Even with the Tech Pack and heated grips etc its cheaper than a V4SF and for me much more pratical than a Tuono.

Here in Canada, you can pick up a new (discounted) 790 for around $9,900 (£5,700) vs an 890 (no discount) at $13,700 (£7,900). Plus the 790 comes with the quickshifter and track pack already activated as standard. Mind you, unless price is your main criterion, the 890 is still the far better bike, IMO. 😎

Absolutely agree with your Positives (from this armchair perspective!) and would be happy with a 15k purchase. If only the niggles weren't there, for that price. Especially paying extra for the quickshifter and Acrapovic exhaust. The latter connected by hose clamps didn't impress, never mind the weedeater sound. Am never impressed by a new bike that needs parts replaced as soon as you get home from the Showroom. Sorry for you Ducati. Compliments on a fair Assessment of this impressive machine. Compliments to KTM for supporting you.

Say it the way the manufacturer says it. :) Software isn't free to develop and having things "enabled" makes it easier for the customer to get something without a long visit to the dealer and more labour costs. If they had OTA updates (like Tesla) you could just add a feature via your phone when you can afford it/want it.

Good review. Absolutely agree about the Akra, they aren't worth having any more, beautiful quality but they've got too quiet over the last few years and the baffles are totally inacessible now, also very expensive. A Yoshi or SC work well, AR are a bit chavvy for me. You rarely see a track bike with an Akra installed now on track days, that says a lot. The riding position is fine for me at 6'2" and don't forget the bars are adjustable. I agree re: the QS, it should be included. The Track Pack I understand more, not everyone wants it although it is a fantastic 'mode' and not just for track, I hope you tried it. Price wise, you can get a brand new one OTR for about 14.5k including the full tech pack (QS, track etc). Personally I highly recommend the SDR, I'm on my third, great bike.

Dilemma I’d say, noting your observations it is definitely time to take a test ride post C-19 lockdowns. TBF... not TMF! You have presented a well balanced and fair appraisal, and if I were a KTM suit, I’d be OK with the review....just need to get bum on seat to compare notes etc. Having both a BMW and KTM, I too and lets say, brand aware... loyalty? Yes in some way... but when it comes down to the choice of a bike, its as critical as your choice in comfy shoes.

I think you can thank the Euro 5 regulations for the sound, or lack there of, from the Akra muffler. After running through no less than two catalytic converters and a pre muffler, there’s not much sound left even if you made it a straight through muffler....which it may in fact be 🤨.

I've fancied a 790 Duke as a second bike for a while but a friend had an SMCR that went back to dealer after proving so unreliable. Same friend also got rid of his Multistrada for low speed fuelling issues which is totally acceptable with modern engine management systems (as KTM has proved). I think the exhaust, being an OE option probably still has to meet certain noise regs (at least in the eyes of KTM, if not the customers). Also agree about the charging for options that already exist on the bike - they should just add a nominal amount to cover it and have it as standard. If I could afford a 1290, I'd have one though (as a second or third or fourth bike :D )

@Viktor Sligo What you said and showing up with yet another bike might result in my wife sending me to sleep in the backyard without a tent. (it is winter here) :) Granted my current stable is not as numerous as TMF's, but saying "honey bunny, the love of my life, TMF has a bunch of bikes. Why can't I have more? His wife lets him!" usually invokes the answer of "are you a lemming? if TMF jumps off a cliff, are you going to jump right after him?" to which I would answer "depends on which bike I am ridding". It kind of goes downhill from there. :)

Great review! The sensivity of switching the display between day and night mode already drobe me crazy on my previous SDR 2. Much better noe but still not 100% good. But this is a minor point on the list of negative points of a bike. I agree that the newly designed switches are an improvement, though theway they operate the menu has changed. So you need to get used to it. Not big deal but I noticed this immediately. The indicator dwitch has not enough resistance. You often have to double check if it has been activated or not. There is no "reaction" in terms of pressure or a click. I installed handle bar risers just right away. I felt that the riding position is too much leaned forward (for a short guy like me ... as you ;-)). The quick shifter is great! Best one ever used. Smooth as silk. Anothe rnegative point is that there is no longer any space to mount a sat nav. At least not an acceptable position for me. Will give it a try using a SP Connect system to mount my mobile phone (with an anti vibration module. I also think it´s a great looking bike. Not cheap but worth the money. Looking forward to riding it again whe the weather gets a bit better.

I'm with those who can't stand KTMs business practices around electronic features. I like a lot of KTMs and still think the Duke 390 is the best learner bike on the market... But I'd never buy a KTM again until they stop this rubbish. Paying to activate a feature that's already on the bike (and is relatively standard nowadays like quickshifting!) is absolutely garbage and should be punished by us as riders by avoiding them until they change.

As always an expertly balanced review - one thing that did occur to me, that would perhaps give an overall benchmark to any of the bikes you review , would be a " Flyer 1 to 10 would I buy it ? " score. Don't want to make life any harder for you , but it would help us less fortunate armchair experts make a bit more sense of what is quite a complex subject. Maybe a bike score would stop the nay sayers who accuse you of unbridled praise in all your reviews. Also, good to see how your score would compare to MCN - after all, you've done enough of this to have a respected opinion. Best regards. :-)

Hi Andy, thanks for reviewing the SDR. Having owned one for about 7 months it was interesting to listen to your views. As for that travesty of an exhaust, I agree with you on the underwhelming sound, but disagree on the looks. It’s awful! Just as ugly as the stock one in my opinion. With regard to the quickshifter, most decent dealers would hopefully chuck that in for free at point of sale. Mine did anyway. Totally agree about the reservoir covers. Most owners will swap those pretty quick for the anodised power parts. Anyway, totally love mine, so thanks again!
