@@maxflight777 It is the same with cars though. They have grown. When I started driving, 1100cc was very much the norm for an engine. And a modern Ford Fiesta is now bigger than a mark one Ford Escort (which was the Ford Focus of its day).

@@stevetaylor8698 What I like to call the golf factor. The original hot hatch is now an expensive family sized car, and the polo that sort of took over from it as the small car has now been replaced by the ... up? lol I know with cars a lot of the size issafety things and such - my father in law has a CX3 and that car is friggin tiny inside, but it's a bit of a chonker outside thanks to all the safety stuff... plus the fake SUV styling (it's a mazda 2 really). With bikes... I think it's the change from people buying them as cheap transport to weekend toys combined with emissions regs. Bigger engines for a while now have been the way to get more power past the pipe sniffers. In part I've noticed we're now far more focused on torque numbers than we used to be 20 years ago ... but I rather think that's probably just a result of their marketing campaigns to tell use why the penguin friendlier engines are as fun.

there was a time that a 300cc was considered a proper big bike when 30hp were more than enough. I still think they are but what I'm about is that motorcycles are so expensive nowadays, a Honda cb500f is considered a learner bike it costs reasonably well but 10k for a motorcycle it's kinda a ridiculous price for just 2 wheels.

Had test ride of the F900r yesterday. Had F800GT for last 3 years and was concerned about the forward lean on this bike. It instantly reminded me of a Street Triple I had years ago but the forward lean is not as agressive as the Street and it does not impact upon the wrists. The riding was effortless, the engine great and gear change flawless. Its a naked and considering I have a tourer I didnt think it was an issue even at 70 mph. Compared to the F 800GT its a completely different bike - leagues ahead and you can throw it around corners like a Street - and it can be very civil if you want it to. Agree with your comments TMF - only one complaint the seat is a plank - however easily resolved with a gel insert as the Bike is comfortable in standard set up. I am 6. 1 so will need a higher seat. Placed a deposit on the Bike after the test ride on the day. Recommended

Got a 21 year old F650 BMW with a ROTAX engine. It's done 92000kms ;does not use oil between change [3500] still on the original clutch , cam chain .and tensioner , Why does not BMW still use Rotax..Also got a 01 RSV 1000 with a ROTAX and it's brilliant. BMW I think are making a mistake going for a Chinese engine just to save a few dollars.
@maxflight777
@maxflight777 4 жыл бұрын
stephen callil You ask a very good question! It’s all about “economies of scale” now - sadly. I agree the rotax singles (and lovely 800cc twins) were “playful” trusted. It’s interesting to note that Rotax supply over 50% of the engines used on light and sport aircraft. They are so reliable and perform well for their weight. Sadly, the economics of manufacturing in Slovenia and Austria mean that you can buy far cheaper in China. BMW’s atrocious start with the decompressor issues on the Chinese “Loncin” single, haven’t deflected them from this path. It’s only a matter of time till your R1250GS has a Chinese designed and manufactured engine imho.

@@maxflight777 I'm correct. Aprilia was making the BMW F650 (the twin of Aprilia Pegaso which had slightly better tuned Rotax) at least till 2001, and OPs bike is from 1999 or older. Even though later on BMW started making f650 themselves, they still used whole lot of Italian Pegaso parts in it, and throughout the later lifecycle both bikes were very much joint effort. Do catch up.
@maxflight777
@maxflight777 4 жыл бұрын
impact0r YOU are very odd ! My comment was a polite reply to Stephen who asked “Why do BMW not still use Rotax ?” He asked a good question. I explained; that China has featured more since 2007, (100% since 2008) due economics of scale... Then you rudely, “but in” with some ancient history from 2001? I’m baffled by your contributions mate. FFS we are not talking about the OP’s bike ... we are trying to discuss why Rotax have been ditched by BMW .

Thank you for the honest review. It’s a bike I’m interested in to replace my Honda CB500F, as I want more power but still a naked bike. I thought the written review in MCN was really negative, as they spent more time comparing it to the XR, that they’d previously reviewed, and talked about that more so it gave me the impression that they didn’t really have an open mind about the R. You and a couple of other viewers could manage to detach themselves from the XR and give an honest review whilst riding it, so I thank you. It’s defiant top of my list now, thanks to such a well considered review from yourself.

No, I’m too old for these kind of bikes. I no longer want an attack bike; that doesn’t mean I don’t like a bike that has a bit of power. Around 100-120 bhp is very nice and more than enough in the real world. I need weather protection in my country (NL) and I need an more or less upright seating position so the xr or similar bikes are preferred by me; in other words an allroad or a not to extreme sports tourer. The tank capacity is too small for a bit of touring and commuting.

Does this bike deserve to be compared to the likes of the Street triple, MT09 and KTM790? I feel a good comparison would be the GSX S750 and Aprillia Shiver. I say this due to the price, performance and weight. The others listed above a more full on and hooligan bikes in my mind and all about middle weight naked high performance. I love the look of the bike and considering selling my own GSX S750 for one. My main concern is can I have fun on it? Hi TMF, really nice review of bike I've been patiently awaiting an upgrade to from BM. I think you made a mistake on the seat height. You would have flatfooted a 770mm I believe. Anyway maybe you can cleanup another spec that BM continues to miss-report: front end geometry. They have reversed the trail dimension on roadsters vs R900XR and also previously on R1200-1250Rs. vs RSs. I have never seen anyone call them on this but as you reported, the roadsters have sharper steering and this can't be possible with a longer trail than the more upright models. Really helpful review, thanks. I picked up on your comment about an excellent next step for a new rider coming up from a smaller bike (CB500F in my case). I'd pretty much decided on a 2016+ Street Triple until I saw this last weekend. I'm about to test both the 2016 F800R and the new F900R. The new bike will be 40% or so more expensive than the older model but I'm thinking I might avoid another upgrade in a couple of years if I go for the new bike. My riding is weekend twisties and track based rider training. No commuting. Would appreciate your thoughts?
