Hi chap, I love my 2002 Blackbird, what I can say is that seat is not original, the original follows the lines of the rear fairing spot on, that looks like it's 2 to 3" added height and filling.

Great review, capturing the essence of The Blackbird. I bought the last new one (boxed) in Western Australia, in 2008. I've ridden it across the country from Perth to Tasmania, camping with 100kg of luggage....and done low 11 sec standing 1/4's on it at the raceway. In 14 years of ownership since new, nothing (and i mean nothing) has failed on it. It's hard to think of another bike that is so fast, sturdy, comfy, robust and well-built in equal measure. The pinnacle of Honda quality. I even shipped it with me to the UK...and would never, ever part with it. Other bikes have come and gone.

Love the Blackbird. My Dad bought one new. It took him years to work his way up to it. Got ill and sold it. He had an operation and recovered, but the bike was long gone. Anyway, years later at work, spoke about the bike to my mate and his relative had bought Dad's bike. I then did my test, managed to buy the bike back and surprised Dad with it. Great bike, many miles touring the UK and abroad, amazing times with Dad and my 2 Brothers, all on Blackbirds, so quick and reliable, and still good value, buy now before everyone finds out, Honda quality very impressive.

Rode one back in the late 90s after a friend at work loaned me his (I was riding a CBR 600 FR at the time) and fell in love with it! Whilst a different genre of machine to mine, I was blown away with the combination of grunt comfort and agility for such a big bike. Several friends had them and when compared to the the ZZRs, FJRs etc, the Blackbird always stood out as the best. Fabulous machines that go on forever and will tour the world with virtually zero issues. Hall of fame bike for sure 🏆🏆🏆

Wow! That brings back memories! I was very close to pull the trigger on this bike back in 1998, but ended up buying a Honda VTR 1000 Firestorm and a BMW R1150 GS instead. If you can get your hands on a Firestorm to test, go for it! You will giggle like a nun on a carrot farm when you ride it. Feels like a little 600cc but the torque will stretch your arms. One of the best bikes I've owned.

Like a few others have said : the Blackbird was Honda's answer to the zzr1100, which came out 7 years earlier - the Honda was only afractions faster than the Kawasaki. The main reason the Hayabusa is named that, is that the Japanese peregrine could top 300 kph in a dive - Had all 3, all were good, but the Hayabusa had much more torque and speed. Love these modern classic reviews 👍🙂

and the ZZR1100 was kwaka's answer to the original CBR1000 (the F series) though that did have a more substancial jump in speed 250~ ish kp/h for the CBRf to the 275~ish Kp/h for the ZZR1100 for both in stock form I know my old CBR1000f once given a light tuning warm over, and freer flowing extractors and race pipes (and mirrors removed) could get to an easy 260+ radar checked on the track... maybe faster but ran out of straight

@@TheRealMarxz An old friend lent me his CBRf for a few days many years ago. I was only ever used to riding my own Suzuki 650 Kat and so I thought the Honda was utterly astonishing. I've never ridden any of the more modern or current ballistic machinery but I can't imagine they're far short of cruise missile levels of performance. Must be incredibly frustrating to ride them on most public roads.
@TheRealMarxz
@TheRealMarxz Жыл бұрын
@@keyboarddancers7751 way back when they were new their US nickname on the honda forums was "the transcontinental ballistic tourer", mine had a full kit of Givi cases giving the same capacity as my current ST1300 which of course upped fuel consumption at speed but back before police radar and speed cameras everywhere some roads it was worth the risk - Nullarbor crossings are, after the first, boring, likewise the Great Northern Highway so it was a dance between getting it over with as quickly (and viz as fast) as possible and not running out of fuel before the next roadhouse bowser

@wm0046 the story if true was that the Blackbird in Japan is a very fast bird and the Hayabusa being the only predator capable of catching it. I've no problem believing that's what Suzuki's intended.

I have the early 1996 carb model, it's my first bike after passing my test coming from a 125, purely because the insurance was SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than anything more modern and sensible like a 600, because it's on a "classics" policy. It's absolutely glorious! I find it's two different bikes in one, depending if you're above or below 4,500 rpm ;)

Got rid of my 2020 Kawasaki ZH2 supercharged naked after only 1747 miles, and bought a low mileage ( 5700) 2002 model. No regrets. The XX will roast your inner legs on a Summer day though. Very smooth engine and plenty quick/fast enough for most riders. Long live the XX!

@stevesmith6236
@stevesmith6236 Жыл бұрын
@@es9734 The water temps do tend to get high during slow moving traffic or when stopped for a long traffic light. However, I have NEVER had an issue with the bike because of it. Once on your way, the temps go back down to normal. Wearing leather pants will pretty much stop any engine heat blowing on your upper legs. I too had a Hornet 900 (over here in the states it was called the 919). I don't remember any heat issues with it, especially since it was a "naked" sport bike. I just remember how BUZZY it was.

Agreed! I owned mine from new in 2000 (first of the fuel injected models), for 16 years and did just 16,000 miles on it mostly touring Europe plus a one week stay close to the Nuremberg ring. It never once let me down or ever gave me a heart stopping moment. There’s not a week goes by I regret selling it. It’s the same old problem, so many bikes and so little time and space. 😢

I own a 97 blackbird, had her over ten years, and I genuinely can't ever see me selling her. I'm a big bloke at 6'1 and 20 stone and she's perfect. Had to upgrade the regrec and alternator when they blew but that's a fairly common Honda thing on the older bikes but other than that, the only thing I've changed it lsl bars to just take out the little wrist weight and shoulder pain on long runs, and a new seat from CMS after the foam in the original had given up. I love her and everything you said is so true of this beauty of a bike

The only fault I ever had with my 1st Blackbird, was in 2004 having just crossed a mountain pass from France into Italy, the battery boiled dry and there was a 1" hole in the rectifier. I filled the battery with drinking water and carried on another 125 km, as one by one, all electrical systems shut down and it finally died, in an Autostrada service area north of Turin, near the town of Novara. Take note and make sure you have European Breakdown cover, as I had with the RAC. They were brilliant. Truly great bike though.

@@ttmadness34 I bought a bike on trust from a well known bike supermarket (not superbike factory), paid up front, had it delivered to my door some 200 miles away. First thing they did was get me to sign something to say I was happy with it. Stupidly I did. Turned out to be a pup running on 3 cylinders that had had many fingers in the wiring loom. They said it was fine on delivery and refused to take it back. My fault entirely. Always always always try before you buy. Sounds obvious but many people fall in love with bikes just on looks and ill-founded trust.

Great review, I bought the naked version X11 about two years ago and loved it so much I bought a low mileage carb 2000 Blackbird. I alternate between them almost every day. The more I use the blackbird the more I love riding her, as you mentioned the comfort the power delivery the build quality the looks the sound combine to make it one of the best bikes I have ever owned. I have tried modern bikes but in truth none compare to my X11 and blackbird for that grin factor you mentioned. I converted both bikes to ULEZ compliance and us them both in london and countryside, once you get used to this bike she is a great commuter both motorways and city riding. Until the electric bikes finally push us of the road my blackbird is a keeper.

If Honda had ABS on that bike, I would have bought one in a heartbeat. Man was I in love with the engine and the shape and everything. So sad and stupid that they abandoned it.

Another great review, Andy. I came close to choosing one when they came out in '97, but instead I was seduced by the gear-driven cams of the V-4 and chose a VFR750FP instead (last of the 750s). Back then, Honda build quality was exceptional, hence even now the bikes from that era can still look good. I think my VFR had similar mirrors and the cockpit also looked similar, but not exactly the same (VFR had a white-faced tacho).

Great to see you testing the 'bird. I owned one for a short while about 12 years ago, what a beast. Unfortunately though I just could not get on with the riding position having always ridden upright naked bikes up until then, so it had to go. I still have a hankering for another one though, as you say they are so well engineered. Amazing bikes. Thank you for the video! 👍

I purchased a Blackbird new in 2003, Candy blue colour scheme. Absolutely loved the bike, one of a few I quite regret selling on, mind you it needs a bit of discipline as it can easily be a licence loser but so comfy and was a pleasure to ride

Really enjoyed this one as it brought back memories of mine - first brand new bike I ever bought in 1998 so was a carb version in the metallic grey. This bike looks mint and good secondhand proposition. Don’t think I could ride one now as I’d find the lean too much but still an eye catching classic. Good choice 👍

I loved mine, it was one of the few bikes her in doors would get on the back of. In fact she was so chilled on it I would quite often have to give her a nudge because she’d nod off, excuse being the engine note, it would do all I asked of it in 3rd gear, actually made me a bit of a lazy bones. Had many a discussion with purists about the linked braking mechanism, which has stood the test of time. Lovely bike, only reason I moved it on was not because of anything wrong with the bike, it was me, chubbed up and the weight on the bars got the better of me….Appreciate the trip down memory lane…..

Have a friend who took his Blackbird to Morocco on an overland tour with his wife on the back. Made it OK apart from a failed battery right at the end and a slightly dented exhaust collector box underneath. One of the other participants was a 70 year old on a BMW K1600 we nicknamed the Panzer, did river crossings and everything!!

I put over 200,000km on my CBR1000f (think it was about 240,000 and something when I sold it with one cam chain replacement as the only major service issue) , and a friend who still owns the original 97 Blackbird he got new clocked over 300,000Km a few years ago with not much more than that service wise (apart from his everyday ride he's been the long way around Australia a fare few times done three laps with me and my CBR100f and more times than that solo, a couple multi month tours of Europe and a full lap of the US and Canada) he has the worst record of bike maintenance ever, says something about Honda engines of the era

A very sympathetic review TMF. Agree with pretty much everything you say. I have an '07 bike, in exactly the same colour as this one. One of the last made. Had it 7 years. Love it. It is turbine silky smooth and fast. Roll on the throttle in 2nd and 3rd and in just a few seconds you can be riding at well over 100mph. Like this one mine is mint and still very low miles. It's a special occasion each time I ride it. I have full Honda luggage for it as well. As you suggest it is indeed a great touring bike as well. Build quality is superb. Wish like you note it had ABS and TC, but these aren't deal breakers. They weren't around at the time or if bikes had them, it was very primitive in operation. Nevertheless It's a keeper. I'll not part with it. Thanks for your review. Like the new style. Flows a lot better. Nb. On mine the nose cone, lower side fairing and mirrors are all the same shade of grey - iron nail, but the one you have ridden here, the nose cone and mirrors are much lighter shade than the lower side fairing grey. It might be the light, don't know. Just seems odd to me.

Good review. took me down memory lane like many others below. Glad you wound it on a bit at the end there as I found its performance was incredibly linear. Up to 7k it would build but then it would just give more and more to the redline. I used to call it the time machine because it could shrink distances so efficiently. Took my 2001 fuel injected blue one back lane scratching, over the Alps getting caught in blizzards, enjoyed it at Brands Hatch and Silverstone track days, commuted and achieved my highest ever speed on a public road - in Germany of course ;). Zero mechanical or electrical problems in the 8000 miles and two years I had it. I only sold it as I did find the footpeg position a bit high and would get sore hips after an hour or so. Am 6'1" for reference. Some taller people might not find it too comfortable for long motorway stints.

Cracking review. Ive got an earlier '00 with a cool 55k mls, and she still does it. Sadly making way for something Sadiq might disapprove less of me commuting on e.g later Triumph Speint or VFR. Such a well built bike, she polishes up nicely, and hasn't put a foot wrong.

Love reliving these old Bikes through this series. I too remember the Super Blackbird knocking the ZZR1100 off the top perch but never got to ride one. Great review, thank-you. I completely agree bikes of this era are now fantastic value for money. My 2c worth. Two years ago I happened upon a mint, low mileage 5th generation VFR 800. The price asked was substantially less than I’ve paid for a reasonable quality bicycle, couldn’t resist. The intention was to compliment my much more modern GS. The Honda is now 21 years old but doesn’t feel a day of it. I’ve enjoyed it so much I’ve let the BMW go, just wasn’t using it. 5th gen. is a pre-VTEC model, it’s smooth, linear, characterful and not emissions strangled 110hp is certainly more than enough for me on today’s roads. I particularly appreciate the excellent tracking in side winds, stable handling, comfortable ride, precision over-engineered feel, simplicity of use and the clarity of the traditional dash. It’s easy to manoeuvre, manageable seat hight, not top heavy, only 210kg wet and has excellent economy an easy 220+ mile range on 21L tank. The gear driven cam V4 sound is so sweet it makes the bike enjoyable even at lower speeds, this is important to me. I use it for day leisure rides and multi day tours, sometimes camping. I honestly can’t see myself ever selling it. Two practical downsides for me. No ABS, ride accordingly. Secondly, passenger comfort reportedly inferior to GS.

Another fantastic review (as always) Andy. Have to agree with you that this bike was a significant evolutionary step, but the reason, as I recall at the time, was because it challenged Kawasaki's dominance of this genre rather than actually create the genre itself. I once owned the amazing GPZ900R which one could argue was the first game changer for this kind of bike. Then came the mighty ZZR1100 which was the ultra-fast Sport-Touring benchmark for a good while until the Super Blackbird came along and later the Hayabusa, before Kawasaki got involved again with the current crop of bewilderingly powerful bikes......wonderful machines, all of which i think any of us would still be happy to own if we could just fit one more in the garage 🙂

Great bikes I had one for about ten years mine was the original 97 version of the bike. Man was it quick she'd pull from any gear and certainly required a lot of counter stirring in the corners , but a very livable machine she'd go around town and low speeds without any problems. I toured on it and commuted on it, on the touring end it was great but not as comfortable as my old VFR800 , yet my wife as the passenger found it more comfortable than the VFR , great bike great video mate

Still got my '02 model after 19 yrs. Love her so much I brought her with me when immigrated to NZ. I've been tempted to stray with test rides but always return to my baby. Re. your comment about the seat height, just looking at the shape of the pillion perch, that seat has been re-upholstered. Probably explains why it is so comfortable - I did the same to mine and fitted peg lowering brackets. Even more comfort and extra leg/knee room (I'm 6'1"). PS. You might want to pixelate the speedo in the last 20 seconds 😉.

A 6mm spacer under the rear shock mount transforms the slow steering. VRF800 bars fit with a few mods along with a peg lowering kit increases the comfort immensely. The front is under sprung and over damped fixed with an inexpensive spring replacement kit and 5wt fork oil. A better rear shock and then the bike is a bloody excellent high speed touring weapon. Great re-review. I used to own a Kawasaki ZX12 and loved it. At 6' it fitted me nicely. I think these larger sports bikes fit standard sized riders better than small superbikes do. I've always thought a sportsbike 10% bigger than one designed to be raced by smaller BSB/WSBK bike racers isn't a bad thing. Think BMW K1300S, Hayabusa, ZX12 etc
