This is a nice day trip for me from Manchester. M6 to just north of Preston, then the A6 through Lancaster, Kendal and over Shap, then join your route to Hartside, Alston, then head over to Middleton in Teesdale, Kirkby Stephen, Hawes, Ingleton, Settle then back to Lancashire through the Forest of Bowland, get on the motorway near Burnley and home. 350 mile day mind.

I'm appreciating this series every bit as much as the Scotland tour. How does Britain pack so many diverse, and isolated landscapes into a relatively small land mass with a relatively large population. Quite astounding. Absolutely love seeing the small villages. They look like they're frozen in some bygone time.

Another great video TMF. Back in the early '80's I was the local bobby in Hawes. As you can imagine not an awful lot happened apart from a bit of ship rustling and a LOT of after hours drinking (remember those days!), so I spent most of my time acting as a guide for American tourists and joining them as they went up to Buttertubs Pass in their coaches (on duty of course!). Depending on the group and my mood they either got fact or fiction about the name :-) . Happy days!! (BTW another boring fact, you will have past Simonstone Hall on your way down from Buttertubs where the infamous Mr J Clarkson had his punch up over a missing steak!)

Great videos Sir. So nice to see the beautiful English countryside. Speaking of the differences between north and south areas, it's the same way in California and also in Thailand where I am now; like being in separate countries. I have always preferred the north and my choice always rings true. Thanks again for the wonderful tour and looking forward to Episode 4!....Sal : )

Greetings from Australia! I'm currently touring all around the UK. My holiday was actually inspired by your videos visiting Scotland and the North. It has been fan-bloody-tastic. By coincidence I drove these exact same backroads to the Buttertubs Pass just yesterday, I had no idea you'd just posted this video on them. I found the Pass itself surprisingly short but was as good as the other roads in the area. The whole region's desolation and bleakness - even in mid-summer - is quite something. The sheep weren't as predictable for me however: I had to stop when several of them blocked the road because they were headbutting each other!

Missed lots of amazing routes in the area. - You should have gone up the steep cobbled road in Alston, and followed it along to Middleton-in-Teesdale. Brough has a lovely café, looking out at the castle. You missing out there. Not stopping at the Hartside Café! you missed the opportunity as in the winter it burnt down.

What a beautiful slice of England you've taken us through on this lovely video! That bridge at the 4 min mark reminds me of one we crossed (Taramakau Bridge) when driving up State Highway 6 on the West Coast of NZ's South Island - only in that case the single lane bridge also carried the railway line! Scary stuff indeed!

The mines you saw were lime kilns, used for fertiliser. The Kilhope Lead mine museum is a different beast. County Durham was a key coalfield until Maggie did for them. You're on my home turf here. You'd have had a better run if you'd followed the right turn in Alston and headed for Middleton in Teesdale and from there over to the North York Moors.via Thirsk. A splendid run through and on to Whitby.

Great video as usual, really enjoyed. I was up that way a few weeks ago doing the lake District and South Alston Loop ( from that book). Great video's , have not seen England and Scotland since my father got caught stealing a loaf of bread and we all got transported to Australia , in a leaky boat in 1972 . Winter in Queensland Australia (now) is a chilly 12 degrees at night :) , but we get up to 40+ degrees in a bad dry summer .My father was a truck (Lorry) driver and delivered new trucks(2) piggy -back from East coast (Queensland to Western Australia ) 5 days (12 hour/days) and 5 hour flight home .You would love Tasmania (small Island below Australia) , first settlement. Its like England , with A,B,and c road markings and lush green hills and old stone houses and lightly populated . Just have to watch for Kangaroos , that pop out of no where at dusk and dawn . They don't have any road sense and are all over Australia . Keep the video's coming .

I live in West Yorkshire now, so don't go that far north too often, but it was certainly great to see the A686 again - one of the best roads in the country! Thanks again for another great set of videos, these brought back memories of negotiating the Hardknott and Wrynose on my old 1100 Pan European with Mrs Tall back in 2001, and it was riding the the 686 on an 1100GS the following year that converted me to BMW. You may not be interested in this at all, but I note your frustration with setting waypoints on the Navigator 5. I notice in previous videos that you sometimes attach a mobile phone to your bars. I navigate with Sygic (I have used this very successfully all over Europe, in the USA and Australia) on my phone, because it is very easy to set a route and then insert as many waypoints as you like, and the system takes you seamlessly from one to the other, the only caveat bring that if you don't actually pass the way point, you need to delete it before the system will let you go on to the next one. Sygic is cheap to buy, very reliable and updates regularly f o. c. Anyway, thanks again, I will be spending the rest of this year navigating the quiter roads of France, but I shall be heading north again next year.

Did you ever find out why it's called Buttertubs? It's because the guys walking across there used to drop their buttertubs down the big holes to cool them down. It's the bit of the road with wire fence along it where they used to stop for a break. I think they were carrying cream to Hawes to make cheese.

Another great video/update Mr Flyer. On the subject of tyre's The Avon Trailmasters seam OK in both the wet & dry, agree satnav great for warnings of tight bend/corners (helps a great deal down the lanes in my HGV tanker, pity they don't inform you of the width (often have to get a 8'6'' wide lorry down a 6'6'' lane the fun of farm deliveries)). In some ways the dull sky's add to the photographic part giving some depth, only one white van & empty roads are you doing something wrong? the best of the three videos on this trip so far. great area better than Devon/Cornwall less holiday traffic to encounter.

Cool video - lovely rich colours from the GoPro Curious - have you ever thought about a 2nd cam, perhaps somewhere on the bike? Personally not a huge fan of the ones that point at the rider but maybe a rearward view one or a crash-barcam would give an interesting extra perspective. Just a thought anyway. :-)

Eyup MF, best vid to date, I lived in High Wycombe for 28 years due to 6 years in the RAF and then settling down there after my demob but always wanted to come back to my home town of York and finally got round to doing just that in 2001. I have never looked back !!! I'm now retired and ride a tiger explorer rand head out at every available opportunity on it , all of us riders are so fortunate to have we've got up here, ( they don't call it gods country for nothing) and there is a huge biking fraternity and it's easy to see why, a trip to the lakes and back is achievable in one days riding but if you put a nights bnb in the mix it becomes a two day adventure , similarly, the Scottish Borders are well within a days ride so that opens up another playground. Just going out to give it a polish in readiness for tomorrow, Northumbria beckons and the forecast is looking good. Ride safe , looking forward to seeing next weeks instalment. Cheers Chris .

Brilliant again TMF. You are truly lucky sir riding our glorious land while most of us mear mortals are at work slogging away. Regarding getting a planned route to bmw nav, please try myrouteapp. It's brilliant easy to use, uploading routes is breeze. I have a Zuma 660. You have Here maps on their which is the format that Garmin use, and also a dedicated bmw nav uploaded. You would have to join as a lifetime gold member to get all benefits of this program.Sorry for waffling on but it could make more use of you navigator.
