Well Mr TMF, I have to say this was your best touring video to date, not that there is anything wrong with the others you have shared. With this one you revealed a bit more about yourself and also allowed your sense of humour to come to the fore! It's hard work producing this type of video, I hope others appreciate your efforts as much as I do, I'm sure they do! Yorkshire is a really beautiful area of the UK, you've done it justice.My attitude to motorcycle touring alone is much the same as yours, when one is alone it's not possible to upset anyone and you can take your time and do literally as you please, drink in the sights, sounds and smells which are not always pleasant, lol.Thanks again for sharing this content, it's really as good as it gets. Cheers, tony. PS I'm sure you have many friends! Lol.

Apparently, it's called butter tubs due to the caves that passing farmers on their way to market would stop and lower their wares into the caves to keep them cool in the summer

Great to see all my favourite roads from my backyard in one trip done by a fellow ELO fan, I saw them at Hull in July '17, and pork pie lover. The photo stop at 30.39 is the Hole of Horcum which legend has it was made when Wade the giant threw a handful of Werth at his missus during row. Keep up the great work. You should try for a TV series.

I did enjoy your tour of the Dales, my typical stomping ground, I live near Scarborough. Apart from being one of the most beautiful beautiful parts of the country, it covers such a huge area with some spectacular biking roads, you could spend a week up there and still not see everything, I really do love the area. Unfortunately, the weather up that neck of the woods can be a trifle increment, but as you go east it does get drier, in fact we are very short of rain here.. I intend taking a run through the Dales when I pick up my new baby ATB

Just a 'heads up', If you ever get up Yorkshire way again for a few days it would be worth a stay in or near Malham and visit 'Gordale Scar' and Malham Cove and take the walk that takes in and takes you over the paving. Spend a couple of days around there and you'll find it extremely spiritually rewarding and slows the mind and body down :)

For overnight trips, I've never previously ridden without friends... I love the frequent "coffee stop" banter with mates and the beers/ curry laughs in the evenings. In general, the more friends the better! However; after 35 years of biking, and inspired by your "solo" style.... last week I tried a solo trip to Scotland from my home in Warwickshire. (Applecross/Skye and half the NC500). You are quite correct .. Sometimes it's just as enjoyable alone! I learned something and surprised myself ... thanks MF!

Excellent! I completely get you - I'm just back from a lads flying trip down to Majorca, loads of fun banter in the evenings etc and it definitely helps to have more than one pilot on board if something unplanned happens - so I tend to fly in groups but ride solo....

Although touring with other bikers is fun once you're off the bike. To enjoy the bike and scenery and relax, in my view it's better to ride alone rather than worry what other riders are doing. People faff and want to stop when you don't or not stop when you do, change the itinery, etc. I don't want to answer to anyone when I'm on the bike. That's the point isn't it? Great content TMF loved all the tour vids. Cheers

Buttertubs gets it's name from the deep holes you rode by at the very top where farmers are supposed to lower their dairy produce to keep cool while traveling to Haws market.You can see them on my Video Return to Buttertubs as I stopped of and took photo's . By the way the temp is always cold up here and usually wet.

I think the little village you went through not long after Butter Tubs pass was Bainbridge a cracking café over on the right hand side of the grass that runs through the middle, and Butter Tubs pass is so named because of the deep holes in the rocks where you looked to your right and said good for photos, apparently on the way back from market in the olden days they would lower the butter and perishable good were lowered down there to save having to take them all the way home and collect them going back to market the next day

Thanks. Another good one. You are right re the panniers - you can certainly feel them when loaded. I used the BMW plate to mount the top box where the pax seat was. It felt much better - much closer to the CoG...not hanging out in the breeze. I could do a 3 or so day trip (in Oz...) using the top box and a tank bag without the panniers. Aren't the damn panniers heavy when loaded! Oh, how I cursed lugging them up narrow flights of stairs in english hotels.... :-)

I'm a bit like you in that I like riding with friends on a day ride but I love touring on my own. I stop constantly for photos and I like to deviate from my route a fair bit. I also like to book some cheap digs on the day in stead of planning way ahead. I did a ride from Brisbane to Melbourne and back this year using Tomtom's curvy route option for the whole 4500km and I had the best time. I can recommend solo touring to anyone.

Not so in East Kent, only about 25% acknowledgement, interestingly, usually get a nod from scooter or learner riders. I'm not sure if its my imagination, but lack of nod acknowledgement seems to have got worse since I fitted a dark tint visor for the summer, or is it because I have an adventure style bike (Triumph Tiger XRx)? PS: Regarding friends in group ride outs - as they say "A Friend in need is b***** nuisance!

Very nice video. What kind of guides do you have in your tank bag? Maybe you can give us some tips for how to make a road-book or how plan a trip. Would be nice. Thanks in advance.

I think the smell of Aniseed is Sweet Cicelly, one of the Umbellifer family. It's related to Fennel, Cumin and many other herbs.

Nigel is right. They pump the crude absinthe straight from the moors and refine it in the distilleries scattered all over the Wasteland. Roar Warrior was there decades ago during the Great War, hoping to fill his tanks, but Lord Humongous was standing in his way. It was the stuff of great legend, even today's kids know the tale of Mad Max and his V8 Interceptor running on pure 110 octane North Yorkshire absinthe.

Another great video! I'm loving your touring trips, they're not just a video blog with some random music in the background, I really enjoy your commentary too. Would you have any advice for some one thinking of doing these sort of trips on a cruiser style bike, more specifically a Harley Fat Boy or Breakout? Would they be suitable or too restrictive on handling and ground clearance?
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind comments Steve - I think you can tour on any bike, just some are more comfy than others! As long as you can take some luggage just go for it...but don't bite off too many miles in one day. Maybe plan to do 200 miles a day and adjust accordingly...

TheMissendenFlyer Ok, thanks for replying. I have an R1 at present but have always fancied a Harley for these kind of trips, much comfier for long distance but could be a struggle round some of those hairpins. Anyway, I look forward to seeing more of your videos 👍

It is stunning riding up here but you really need to be careful if you want to keep your licence. They're absolutely not kidding about those unmarked patrols. A couple of Sundays ago I went through no less than three speed controls in the space of five miles or so. A689 through the north Pennines.

Nice job as always, riding in the wet always makes you appreciate when it's nice and dry and sunny ☀️. How do you know when the battery has run out without stopping and checking,my old GoPro 2 eats batteries, thinking of getting the new one. The gearbox on your bike sounds like something from a 1960s tractor, are they all like that. Keep up the great work, looking forward to the next one.

Cheers Duncan - one more to come in this series next Friday (but more tours to follow). I don't have a magic way of knowing when the battery runs out, I just notice it stops filming!! I do check it's status on any break stops I do though, 'tis a pain though as you mentioned. And yes the GS gearbox is a bit agricultural at low speeds in particular, but seldom misses a gear or delivers false neutrals, it's not an issue for me - I love the bike as you've gathered....thanks for watching - TMF

Rather than wearing "waterproofs" perhaps try the new 3 layer fabrics. IMHO (I've tried a few !) the best ones are BMW Tourshell, Klim and Rukka (4 air) . All of those jackets are breathable so you don't sweat when its raining and have huge zips to get good airflow on warmer ( dry) days. The RST with a waterproof liner ( again imho) , like the (admittedly good looking and popular) BMW Rallye kit ...is arguably not optimal for general touring! Why do i say that ? Well; you explain it well in your video. You may not be wearing the liner when you need it. Even if you have the liner inserted, it leaves with you a heavy, sodden outer jacket. Just motorcycling madness. Great video, enjoyable.
