In this video I build Tamiya's Bf 109E. Being Tamiya, there are no surprises and it's a bit of a relaxing build. So, let's talk about the grey area of doing German WWII model builds and if it possibly means anything deeper.

Fine. That can be done without the swastika. The United States imposed the anti-nazi laws on the Germans who in turn DO NOT THINK THEY WERE WRONG IN DOING SO. Seriously think about that. While you also chew on the fact that of the Constitutions we imposed on vanquished nations, none are as ossified and reactionary as our own. The Germans embrace the horror their perfection of American Race 'science' and apartheid laws resulted in. Why can't you? When anti-communism is your only guiding light, fascism is inevitable. Hell, I do like the lines of a 109 or a 190, but I don't need a swastika to appreciate the them.

I build a ton of WW2 German armor and don’t think anything of it. I think their tanks are were of a higher quality and I like their look. I’m an American who served in the marines and wouldn’t think twice to tell someone why I build what I build. It’s history and it’s a choice. I have 30+ finished German armor, about a dozen Russian and one lonely Sherman tank. And I’ll keep building German armor because of their varied paint schemes! Great build and the Swastika is always an interesting debate. The way I see it is yes, no doubt Nazi ideology was crazy and lead to the death and suffering of millions. However, I think the vast majority of modelers want to put it for historical accuracy and correctness and in fact condemn the Nazi ideology. To those having an issue with the Swastika should then also have an issue with the Soviet Sickle, the Union Jack and the Star and stripes as they all represent countries and ideologies which lead to the suffering of millions, be it the the great purges of Stalin, the barbarism of the British colonialiam in India and Africa or the slavery and segregation in America. End of the day nobody is a saint and everybody has blood on their hands.

JUST EXPIERIENCE I HAVE LIVED. NOT REPRESENTATIVE AND THE MODEL GUY HAS THE RIGHT TO NUKE THIS COMMET TO ORBIT IF HE SO CHOOSES (or I will if it becomes a warzone and gets out of hands) I worked as a Goldsmith for a restorationprojekt of old uniforms from both worldwars from EVERY nation participating and their respective iconographys. To explain it a little bit further, the higher the rank the more bling they got, especially in the first WW and the Marine with the embroidery and the buttons and of course the medals, our job was to either restore/complete the sets. When we got to WW2 Germany with their iconografys we did them originally (with the skulls and swastikas of their respective units/forces) and we got shit from the public for it, like he said in the video. We know the history, but just doing a replica or just a part of the model with the iconografy should be okay to do so. I mean we can put the Hammer and Sickle on stuff and nobody bats an eye (some do but still a good comparisson) Anyway, the project got scrapped because there was no way to win. Every logical argument got blown out of proporsion. It was surreal. Our boss who had PhD. in history of war who commissioned it to be Show pieces to be used in universitys and museums for instructional purposes got fired from the university because of it, just because a few parents got triggered. We were all baffled by it. I know this is an extreme example but it really shows what he said in the video. If it where just only SS iconography I really don't know if we would have done it. But it was not for a private collection or the like so I can't really say anything. And just on a side note. There is an unspoken rule in any Job that works with commissions be it in tattoo studios, artists or in my Field jewellery, accept under your own decission if you do it or don't. Generally all that, that is either racist, either names, iconography or similar generally get rejectet. BUUUUUUUUT like I said before. Everyone needs to make that decision themselves. If anyone who wants/needs to know I am Halfgerman, Halfswiss. who grew up in Spain and the commision was in Portugal

As a lifelong aviation nut and former USAF Crew Chief (Mechanic), I'm drawn to the technology of the aircraft. No one can deny that German Engineering was then, and still is some of the world's finest - regardless of political affiliation. While I sympathize with those communities/race's that were devastated by the NAZI party, I wouldn't let that stop me from creating an historically accurate model of a machine used during that conflict. Like you said in the beginning, removing the symbols/emblems of such things doesn't erase it from history or make it go away. It makes no sense to me, much like the ridiculousness happening across major metropolitan cities in the US right now.

As an a graphic designer, its simple for me. The 109. 190, and Ju 87 were designed to be aggressive, hence a preditory look at a time when most other country's air forces were years behind in design. some were biplanes from the 30s. the Allies were pushed into designing beautiful planes such as the spitfire, mustang, and tomahawk. Its an "aesthetics thing" for me. Besides, Im happy to build 109s and 190s in Hungarian, Romanian, or Italian livery. German design of WWII as follows, The Panzer tanks compared to the any other tanks of that era. The 109 had a shark like appearance, it was just cool looking.

I'm just about to finish this very model myself. I chose to paint it as a Russian front ZG1 'Wespe' 109 (I found the Eduard 'wasp' decals at a local hobby store). Being only my 3rd model that I've made in my adult life, I'm still learning a lot (as opposed to the dozens I made in my youth which were all hastily put together). My sequence of paints and coats that I used for my 1st 2 models did not work so well on the 109 and I'm still trying to find what I'm doing wrong. My typical sequence is flat paint the base colors. Then can spray with Tamiya clear, Then decals and panel lining. Lastly, can spray with Tamiya flat clear. I found that my 1st application of Tamiya (gloss) clear lifted some of the paint - in particular the top coat of Tamiya dark grey. I'm very happy with the Tamiya light blue on the underwing surfaces but the upper surfaces Tamiya dark grey were very disappointing.

i very much liked your commentary about the lack of tolerance in today's society. Like you, I also build the occasional Luftwaffe aircraft; not because I side with Nazism but because their equipment contained very advanced pieces and I'm not afraid to admit that in some cases was better than the Allied counterparts. I particularly like to model WWII armor. There was an elegance to the German tanks that appeals to me. I also like to model the Allied Sherman tanks with add-on armor. It demonstrates the Allied crews' ingenuity in battle. They faced superior armor and quickly and effectively adapted.

First. Great build. I'm glad you brought up the subject about the insignia. Apparently, this is a sore spot for some. That is utterly ridiculous! I have built German aircraft (among many others) since the early 60's. Never was an issue back then. Now, all of a sudden; it is? NOT!!! If you are a person that can not learn from history because you are offended by it; you will be the person causing all the rest of us to repeat it's mistakes. Because, if you can't learn from history; you WILL repeat it's mistakes! I recently acquired a FW-190 by Revell/Germany. And; no swastikas on the decal sheet. Therefore, it is not historically accurate. I had to purchase them on an aftermarket sheet. I was out needless expense because SOMEONE ELSE might(?) be offended. Political correctness has just about ruined any intelligent conversation people may wish to have. I refuse to be that! Great job on the kit.

youre right on my man. im currently working on an airfix p51d. the only hold up will be i need to source the decals for the tuskegee pattern. i pick it being former air force and the iconic nature and impact, along with the fact that as a kid my favorite plane of the era was the B17 and the red tails got more of them home than any other. so in addition i will also be doing a similar scale bf109g in a color pattern of the time period they would have interacted with the red tails and will also have to source the swastika for historical accuracy. because the intended goal is eventually to set the two planes up in a dogfight diorama with the p51 giving chase. p51 being my favored fighter aircraft of that era. and as a talking piece it would look very out of place for the bf109 not to have its swastika for that period. it sets the tone of why in the setup i have in my head you are cheering for the american fighter to take the german plane down. outside of that theres no context as to why these two aircraft are involved in a tense battle.

I’m mostly an armour modeller and most build German later war variants, mostly because the camp patterns are so interesting. Curiously I never use SS division markings but that is a personal choice, I don’t have an issue with modellers who do. Regarding the swastika, on planes or Africa Corps armour, I don’t see the problem as I’d prefer historic realism and crucially we must remember. I make an aircraft model because I like the plane, it's not because I endorse or support the regime where it was produced. The danger for us is that if we hide or conceal our history (by trying to be to p.c.) then we run the risk of making the same mistakes again. All nations have made fantastic aircraft and as modellers we should celebrate that and in doing so we can remember the people on all sides who made the ultimate sacrafice in service of their country.

I didnt realise even canadian/american modelers have to deal with hate when building german ww2 models. In Germany people almost think you are worshipping hitler if you are building ww2 german models in a historic accurate way. Its really bad, even in modeling competitions you are not allowed to show swastikas. At least modelers should handle this topic the way you do, a lot of them sadly don't. Most of germans have a very bad way in which they "deal" with the german past, they just ignore it.... Almost pretending the nazi party didnt exist by outlawing their symbol. Its a shame! We have to face the past and teach our children all of it, so hopefully these horrible things don't ever happen again! Thank you very much for adressing this topic! Keep up the great videos! I totally agree with your statements about our society and the need for history not to be banned or even edited. One case in point regards the banning of the Confederate Battle Flag, you know the one I mean, although ahistorical people never realize that there were more than one CSA battle flags such as the Polk Battle Flag and the Hardie Corps battle flag. General Leonidas Polk was offended by the Beauregard battle flag (the one banned today) because it was a design which grew out of the Scottish Covenanter's Battle Flag, using the Cross of St. Andrews. Polk was not just a general, he was the head bishop of the Episcopal Church, therefore had a political/religious problem with the Cross of St. Andrews. Therefore he designed a Cross of St. George battle flag that also contained starts in the cross, and the color fields were reversed from the St. Andrews flag. The Hardie Corps flag was simply a blue field with a white dot in the middle. Recently there was an example, an absurd example, of how banning the Confederate Battle Flag has produced cultural ignorance that people acted upon. An northern American-Norwegian Bed and Breakfast inn flew a Norwegian Flag outside as part of the themed design. Local residents became offended by what they thought was the Confederate Battle Flag and demanded that the inn owner remove it. Whether he protested or tried to explain is not known to me but the Norwegian flag was removed. This is significant in that it illustrates how ignorance can have results. And basically, the Confederate Flag is only historical, and its use by the KKK, along with the flag of the United States of America, became well known in marches started back during the 1920s in the second variation of the original KKK. Once again, ignorance results in people not knowing that there have been 3 variations of the KKK, and they are not related in a logical linear development. The first was a literary joke consisting of making fun of the Loyalty League which was brought to the South during Reconstruction by Federal Troops. Never heard of the Loyalty League? By the 1970s almost all examples of the Loyalty League had been removed from history. They work black sheets and burned crosses at the homes of Blacks who sided with the Confederacy during the war and the terror they caused has been attributed to the KKK now. However, the printing of handbills with mock stories about the KKK, parodying the Loyalty League were the only activities of the first KKK. It was a kind of National Lampoon during perhaps one year of Reconstruction in Tennessee. How ignorance grows and assumes things is shown by the example of the Mississippi Historical Old Capitol Museum. The rooms of that old building were turned into displays of various periods of history in the state, one room being given over to the Civil War and Reconstruction. In the room was a photo described as a KKK group. But the problem was that the men and horse in the photo are wearing the garb of the Loyalty League! Ignorance is everywhere because history is banned. We are therefore doomed to repeat it. I am happy to update this: The WEB is now posting items about the Loyalty League, also called a Union League.

I'm starting the 1/48 HK B-17 1 Feb as part of a buddy build with Becker's Models. I also have a 1/48 Stuka too but it's a "meh" kit. So that will need some addons

I find the fact you felt had to address building a WWII Luftwaffe airplane as a model as some sort of "issue" as incredibly depressing. I fully understand that in some countries displaying a swastika on box art or as a decal in the kit is illegal. I lived and worked in Germany for almost 10 years, so I get it. But if I'm building a kit I will make it as historically accurate as possible. If my theme happens to be Luftwaffe aircraft of a particular period or battle, then that's it. I don't have to justify myself to anyone or any group, nor should anyone else have to justify themselves to me. Nice build btw....

When I want to build a German aircraft, it is because of the design and engineering,and I have to say that the BF 109 was a beautiful aeroplane, every bit as good or even slightly better than the Spitfire. And as for the Swastika on the tailplane, the real aeroplane had it, the model should!

I look at a vehicle from a mechanical , aesthetic view or just anything that charms me about it but NEVER from an idealogical view.

Being British, I love the RAF aircraft best, but much as I still hate the Germans, I think their aeroplanes are beautiful and rechnical brilliant!

I just like the looks of most German aircraft 😎 I don’t see the point in questioning someone’s beliefs based off models. That just might be me because I build a lot of 109s because there are so many schemes vs something like a mustang which I just don’t find as interesting.

I don't know how we got to the place where building a model, which is a mechanical representation of a pivotal time in world history, could be misconstrued as anything other than replicating a piece of history. How did we get here? Are historical artifacts going to be perceived as offensive? Are true, unbiased academic pieces of literature and research on historical events going to disappear? How can we reconcile with the past, if we want to erase all evidence of it. Great modeling skills by the way. Love the content!! Subscribed!!

I build quite a few WW2 German aircraft and I always inwardly wince a bit when I apply their swastikas, which I think is a good thing. As you say, the Nazis murdered countless people and perhaps a hundred million died in the prosecution of WW2; it was perhaps the most significant point in modern history, and it's important we remember why it was fought. Omitting the swastika allows us to sanitise the collective memory of the war, and I think that this is detrimental to the collective memory. Although a powerful and now-repulsive symbol, we need to be reminded of what it stood for and why extremism should be fought in all its forms.

Look I like building German for what you say and also because if how cool and interesting their camo patterns were as well as their uniforms like now I am working on some SS Panzer troops and I have to say their uniforms especially their camo patterns are very fun and challenging to paint

@@TheModelGuy Dear Sir, sorry to pester again but only done 7 planes and when I go to ultracast.ca and search uschi stencil nothing comes up? Is there another option/ or am I using incorrect search term?
i look at a model and decide if i wanna build it because it either looks cool or not. thats my only criterium. because of that my shelfs of models are incredibly varied
@BBBILLY863 жыл бұрын
Why did you snow camo it then go over it all with the large pattern geometric shape camo
@TheModelGuy3 жыл бұрын
That's called Black Basing and it gives you more variation/wear in your top colours. Takes away any uniformity like pre-shading

The marble basing? That's to break up the monotone of the next colour layer.

where do you get that gold plate for the weathering looks? i really want one and improve on my models. Also, There is nothing wrong with doing German aircraft because, honestly, all aircraft are pieces of art.

Yes, Model Guy, I agree with you on the issue of the swastica...I don't get it...I'm an American, my favorite military model subject is the IDF ( Israel ) love the color schemes on their aircraft and the Merkava variants as well...to me, one of the sexiest but deadliest aircraft ever is the Me 262...right now, I'm on "a kick" of doing Mig-15's during the Korean War with "tiger stripe" patterns...all of this is HISTORY and the best thing about our hobby is "it's your model, select, "model" what and the way you want it to come out...it is my understanding that Revell-Germany won't print swasticas for their kits anymore...silly and shallow...no matter how one feels, it does not alter or change History...let's remember and NOT be doomed to repeat! Great job on your models, I enjoy watching them...Mike G

Recently I had this rare ltd edition Eduard kit shipped from Austria to Holland. As it arrived, it had the swastika's cut from my decal sheet without warning. Being amazed by this I had to find out through forums this is common practice in that particular country. In Holland a common joke by modellers is calling this practice "ze german scissor", picturing this scissor armed german customs border patrolling decal sheets 🤫 Also you should read the story where Revell got in trouble for releasing this luft '46 ufo kinda thing which happend to have offended some for suggesting Germany winning the war or something 😆 🙄

Everybody likes to build the tanks and aircraft of their own country. I only build german tanks and aircraft, i am german so there is a pride and fascination for the machines in that that my ancestors fought only 2 Generations ago. (Besides that German vehicles are the most sexy of ww2)

i made models when i was much younger. a kid! never knew you could get so detailed with all the weathering and everything else until i started watching your videos. now i am a 48 year old kid. what spray gun do you suggest to use that is not pricey , but will not be a regret to buy. i like hand painting, i paint paintings. but i can see the use of an air brush for thin coats that can be a pain in the butt to paint by hand. i tried, some stuff turned out allright , some not. great videos. as far as German planes , when you are playing with your models how are the good guys going to shoot down any bad guys if there is not any bad guy planes?

I use an iwata Clone I got on amazon for $50 Canadian. I did invest in a higher end compressor though that was $230. Just make sure you get a compressor with a tank or can at least hit 20 PSI
