I'm back in action with a slammer build. That means you pick a relatively easy kit to build and don't get lost in the weeds. I spent eight nights on this build just to get the mojo going....and test out the new camera. There's a few cringe bits where things are a tad out of focus, but overall I feel the quality is a lot better than my phone.

This was their first release of the new decals and they were thick and difficult to peel. On my first one it was a 40% failure rate for peeling so on this one I just kept hammering setter. The Zero had no issues with peeling

One minor issue that catches us all out is that wehile happily weathering the airframe, we forget to weather the decals as well. Don't forget roundels, insignia and codes must all be weathered to the same degree as the airframe. (Just my 2c) 👍

A fact of which few modelers seem aware: Spitfire exhausts (individual & manifold types), as well as those of many other British & U.S. aircraft, were made of Inconel metal, which is ~80% nickel. That means highly heat resistant, and NO RUSTING. There remained, however, heat temperature and engine exhaust residue discolorations. Ah....the advantages of having few limitations in strategic metals in one's war industry!

Great looking spitfire! I really like that you tried the eduard decals out without peeling the film. I have a bottle of super strong and will give it a go on the wildcat. I have two questions: 1. How did you cut the camo mask? Did you do it by hand or using a cricut/silouhette? 2. As you have tried going OTT wirh layering in the cockpit and gone softer on this one, do you think it actually does make a noticable difference once it is all closed up?
@TheModelGuy
@TheModelGuy Жыл бұрын
Good question Sean. I used a mask that was sent to me and cut it on my silhouette. For weathering in the cockpit it’s quite visible in the spitfire with the door down. So it is worth putting the effort there. But on the George I am doing, it’s a black hole so it’s not worth it. Test fit your fuselage halves together and see what the light is like in there. That will give you an idea.

It's interesting how some YT viewers become heated over statements made in context to the YTer's build.....it's not about the absolute reality but something provided to emphasise a historical event. What was considered "real" back in the 1940s is put into better context when time and research reveals that things may not have been as remembered by those experiencing such events at the time. My (Italian) mother lived in Milan during WW2 and told me many stories about the allied bombing as described by the media of the time. In truth, some aspects as remembered were skewed by what was said, written in newspapers or told on the radio. Following the release of classified documents after years following the end of the war revealed a different story. That said, if my mother believed what she was told then that is her truth and I accept that. Who am I to correct her when she was the one who endured the bombing and the loss of family and friends. Thank you, Robbie for sharing your story and the beautifully build, camouflaged and weathered Spitfire. I have the old Revell 1/32 Spitfire MkI (Lone Eagles) kit on the bench ready to go so have enjoyed watching your video and the tips and techniques provided which I will put to good use.

Thanks Robbo. My grandfather on my mums side lived in Birmingham during the start of the war as a young kid. He had a lot of stories of collecting metal from the shells before he was evacuated to the country side. The Hurricane may of done the bulk of the fighting compared to the Spitfire during the Battle of Britain, but it was the image of the Spitfire that was used to inspire England.

I’m sorry but the title is wrong. The Hurricane was “the fighter that saved Britain”. There were twice as many of them in 1940 and they shot down twice as many aircraft. For more detail on this, read Leo McKinstry’s book on the Hurricane. Then read any historical account of the Battle of Britain. Nice model but please get your history right.

@@TheModelGuy Oh dear… Care to back that up with some references? I don’t think anyone would doubt it was a great aircraft and was the only front line type to be in service from the first day to the last. It made a great contribution. Nor do I doubt the exploits of the pilots who flew it. The German pilots might have claimed they were attacked by Spitfires, whatever it was that got them but the Spitfire was arguably not even the most important aircraft in the RAF inventory. It was part of a system. Look, if you’re going to indulge in clickbaity headlines, expect a bit of push back.
@dominicpizzey1515

Sorry, but the Spitfire didn't save Britain... The Hurricane did. During the battle of Britain, the only Spitfires that flew were Mki and Mkii variants and those were in relatively low numbers comparatively to the workhorse that was the Hurricane. Both variants of Spitfire were barely better than that of the Hurricane and it wasn't until the later marks further into the war that the Spitfire truly came into its own. It's disrespectful to the pilots of the Hurricanes to even suggest this... Much like the people who think the Lancaster was the bomber to save Britain, when it was the Wellington. Both Spitfires and Lancasters stole the limelight due to mistold histories over the years, overshadowing their more numerous workhorse sister aircraft.
@TheModelGuy
@TheModelGuy Жыл бұрын
These are all good points but most Hurricane pilots stated they wanted to be in the Spits as they watched bf 109s bounce them from an altitude they couldn’t get to.
@blockheadgreen_
@blockheadgreen_ Жыл бұрын
The Spitfire operated throughout the war as a frontline fighter and most certainly became the backbone and "workhorse" of the RAF. The Hurricane was relegated to other roles and second line duties in major theatres not too long after the Battle in late 1941/early 1942 due to rapid obsolescence and their being slaughtered en masse. There's been a hell of a lot of revisionism recently surrounding this topic, literal contrarianism for the sheer sake of being contrarian.
@dominicpizzey1515
@dominicpizzey1515 Жыл бұрын
@@TheModelGuy you've spoken to them all have you? A few people quoted as saying it doesn't mean they all wanted it. Yes the Hurricane was a difficult aircraft to love, however in contrast the mki and mkii Hurricanes were every bit the equals of the Spitfire during the battle of Britain due to those versions of the Spitfire not being the marks we all tend to hear about. It's the Battle of Britain that really broke Germanys airforce during the war and its the version of those aircraft within the Royal Air force at that time that count.
@TheModelGuy
@TheModelGuy Жыл бұрын
@@dominicpizzey1515 I haven’t spoken to every RAF pilot who flew both types. But I do this thing called reading books and for example, Tom Neil, flew Spits and went to Hurricane for the Battle and he states numerous times in his book “Gun Button to Fire” that his squadron was yearning for the Spitfire. Douglas Bader who flew both, preferred the Spitfire. Some big names there along with others I’d have to go home and check to get the names right. But you can be assured that statements I make in my video are researched.
@chilarai1
@chilarai1 Жыл бұрын
A relative who flew RIAF Hurricanes in Burma (and later the Spitfire) told me that unlike the Spit, it was a jack-of-all-trades and exactly what they needed over the jungle. It was a steadier ground attack aircraft which is what they did mostly but when required, it was no slouch against Japanese aircraft either.
