Thank you! You have cleared my doubts about pattern drafting and draping. I thought that draping is done after pattern drafting, but you made me understand the difference.

Great points, and beautiful video. You're right that learning both will help you have a more well-rounded pactice of how to create from scratch. I'm at the very beginning of my construction journey, so videos like this help a lot! Thank you! I'm now curious what will become of that piece you were making. 😍

Ah it makes sense to me know why on pattern drafting videos there are always this random measurements (like 1.5 neckline depths or something like that). It because these measurements where based on calculations done based on the perfect body (*things start clicking in my head *)

For me draping on the dress form and then taking it to paper is the easiest way for me to understand. I am not good at math and find it difficult to visually understand drafting 2D

What a beautiful video explaining the difference & challenges! We just featured a video on a master pattern maker who drapes her drafts. A combination of both techniques.

I recently purchased a dress form based on the bustline, choosing one that is slightly smaller than mine. Unfortunately, it is also the smallest size (0, or 31 1/2 bust), so I can't get any smaller unless custom-made. Here are the problems: Although the circumference of the dressform at the bust is smaller than mine, the measurement from side seam-to-side seam at the front is larger than mine. In other words, the dressform is bustier than I am and can't be changed. If I put one of my bras on the dressform, the underbust is so large that the bra can't be hooked in the back. More problematic however is that my back shoulder width is wider than that of the dress form, so that my shoulder line is about 3/8 inch longer, and garments that fit me fall off the end of the shoulder, making it difficult to drape a sleeve. You can pad the circumference of the dressform at the bust, waist, and hips, but it is more problematic to get the shoulders wider. If I purchased a dress form with the correct back width, the bust would be that much larger. So, perhaps basing the sizing on the chest/bust measurement is not the best idea. Perhaps it should be based on the shoulder width, and breasts of different sizes could be interchanged (LOL). This would also solve the problem of draping the correct cup size. The dressform structure is all well and good if you are just designing generically, but if draping for a real person, these are real problems.

Hello❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ I’m interested in creating and selling sewing patterns. I’ve only been successful in drafting patterns using Helen Joseph Armstrong’s technique, which I have been using since 2018. But I’m worried about running into legal problems if I use this technique. I’ve noticed almost all fashion designers on KZfaq use draping. Is that the ideal way to draft patterns if you plan on selling the patterns or making clothes for people❤️❤️ P.S. you’re an amazing person being so generous with your knowledge and experience. Thank you so much❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Thank you for the video.. it's really interesting 😃.. what is the method that you prefer the most? When you want to create a model with geometric shapes and volumes, is it better to draft it or drape it? 🙏✌️
