Fun fact: After the fight, Leonard complained to his physician that he was seeing strange dots in his sight and after-images. The reason was diagnosed as a dislocated retina, leading to Leonard's first retirement as the physician informed he was now in high risk of going blind of one eye. According to Leonard, this was primarily caused Hearns's shotgun-like jab, powerful enough to nearly render Leonard blind for the rest of his life. It's no wonder Leonard waited until Hearns was getting old to rematch him.

"Get back on the bicycle. Stick and move." Two sentences completely shifted one of the most iconic fights between two extraordinary boxers. Never underestimate the power of competent coaches who know what they're doing.

This was tactically one of the the greatest fights ever fought. They both adjusted and readjusted from round to round.

Rewatching these classics, namely Leonard vs Haggler, Duran and Hearns in this case, I forgot how great Leonard's chin and heart were. I feel they were always overshadowed by his footwork, speed and skill. What a legend!

It’s Amazing how fighters from that era could make adjustments in the middle of a fight even while they were losing to comeback and when. Those were not at all one dimensional. They could box, faint, shuffle, brawl, jab whatever it took to win. And on top of that you look in their corners and you find legendary trainers who coached in the corners telling them the adjustments they needed to make. What a wonderful era of boxing. Below middleweight Hearns had terrifying power - what was so extraordinary was that Leonard didn't just dance and avoid the punches, he actually took a few flush and didn't buckle. At the time, that seemed impossible. He had an incredible chin (until his mid-30s).

For pace and pure drama, this was one of the greatest fights I ever saw. A true classic.

Video suggestion: Boxing fundamentals and terminology. it will help newcomers to the sport and to you channel, as much of the things like: the inside, the outside, pivot, shuffle, the cross, jab, uppercut, the angles, orthodox stance, southpaw, etc, i kind pick up on them from context, or after a few videos. but having them laid out for me from the beginning would've helped a bunch. you made me appreciate the sport, as you were the first channel i encountered, because a key word for you search is ANALYSIS, and you made me kinda of a boxing buff now. so thanks

Excellent breakdown. I watched the fight live in a theater, and even before round 13 it was clear that Hearns had the better of the boxing at range and Leonard the slugging, in direct contrast to pre-fight expectations, but perfectly logical given Hearns' big reach advantage and far slimmer physique. I thought at the time it was foolish by Hearns to go for the knockout, rather than keeping at range and winning an easy decision, but evidently that was more on Leonard, simply deciding to charge in, slug it out and take whatever comes his way. Awesome fight, one of the greatest ever.

Tommy "Hit Man" Hearns. I do remember Leonard being publically announced with eye-related troubles. No one wanted to see bad happen to Leonard. Boxing is no joke.

Great video analysis, your videos really reveal the finer details of boxing styles, your slow motion replays show what any person could miss in real time as world class boxers move that fast and with great precision.

Two things forgotten. A vicious body blow that made hearns wince and definitely affected his game. I believe at the end of the first round, Leonard taunted Hearns, who foolishly hit him in the face. That showed that Leonard got into his head and caused his anger to affect his performance.

These were the truly great days were 4 Boxers completely captivated the world with their fights with other opponents but when any 2 were matched up against each other in the ring , these fights became stuffsof legends... It was amazing to watch Leonard/Hagler/Hearns & Duran box & more often than not destroyed their opponents but put any of the 2 out 4 fighters against each other & it was boxing became a mesmerising sport to watch when these warriors faced off of each other... Sure i've seen amazing feudal fights between other boxers but nobody owned the ring like these 4 & you just have to watch & listen to the blow by blow analysis to see with your eyes & listening with your ears that these 4 boxers utterly captivated people who were normally not even boxing fans... As kid & then teen watching these 4 boxers end up fighting each other as these were always the only 4 left to take each other on again & again as they kept beating each challenger that would see them eventually fight each other again... Of course there was the customer offer of the first option for the loser for a rematch but that just made them own those weight devisions... Yes i've watched other amazing boxer's , since then , from all over the world who built themselves up to become world champions but nothing & i mean nothing , apart from the Greatest being Ali , commanded your attention to watch these 4 guys utterly light up those weight devisions & the 4 of them always , or usually , brought the best of them in boxing ability & strategic terms & i can onky speak for myself when i say when those 4 squared off against each other those fights left me breathless... I will say that with Hearns going on to be the only boxer to win titles in 5 wright devisions that he was surely one of thee best pound for pound boxers but whenever he squared off to either of the 4 other boxers sometimes he could leave you frustrated!.. As in some fights he was just on top form & could take a vicious hit from any if those other boxers but then with those other 3 fighters something just seem to happen to Hearns & if he was hit by a powrful blow he could at times fold & i only ever saw these between the fights of these 4 inductees of the International Boxing Hall Of Fame & though I've watched more than my fair share of great world champions in all divisions before & since , the time of Tommy " The Hitman " Hearns/Sugar " Ray " Leonard/" Marvelous " Marvin Hagler & Roberto " Hands Of Stone " Duran has never captivated me as much as these 4 of the greatest fighters i was privileged to watch & understand how special a time these 4 created for the world of boxing... RIP Marvin Haglar " Sadly Gone But His Legacy Will Never Be Forgotten " In light of this still ongoing coronavirus stay safe and healthy wherever you are in this world... .....

Damn, these videos have made me appreciate the art of boxing a whole lot more, and now I'm planning on taking boxing lessons for the first time in my life

I understand why Sugar Ray Robinson is considered the greatest PFP fighter in history, but Sugar Ray Leonard's level of competition was in a class by itself. Benitez, Duran twice, Hearns, and then Hagler is a resume that no other boxer in history can match. Robinson only fought one welterweight that was as talented as Benitez (e.g., Kid Gavilan) and he never faced any fighter with the skill set of Duran, Hearns, and/or Hagler.

I remember this classic fight as a teenager. But the way you dissect the fight & describe the boxing moves adds another dimension to a classic fight. Well done & thank you

Great job David. I like that the war between Hearns and Leonard are similar to real life. Especially at IB year 1. Its all about adaptability, how fast you can strategize and execute those things and fighting patterns and shifting into different tactics. Even in boxing you still have to use your brain and strategize. Even with someone like Foreman who knew he had to add new skill sets to his style based on his experience and resources.

Excellent analysis and mixing in commentary from the opponents is a great touch. Can't wait for the next one.

This is the best channel for true pugilist's - nowhere else does one get the detailed, technical breakdown appreciable only by those intimately involved with boxing. It proves that boxing is a true art form, a veritable sweet science as difficult and trying as any art in the world.

Your analysis on this fight was EPIC!! I've seen this SOOO many times, even when ABC aired it a week later, after they fought. The way you broke it down, it was like I watching this for the 1st time! GREAT JOB!!

This was one of those rare "fight of the century" match-ups between 2 young, prime all-time greats that not only lived up to the hype, but exceeded it. Ray Leonard, Hearns, Duran and Hagler headed the greatest middleweight era in boxing history but if you had to pick 1 guy who was the head of the pack, I would say by the absolute narrowest of margins, it would be Ray Leonard.

I am really glad I took the time a few years ago when I was first getting into boxing to watch this classic match all the way through! It was truly one of the most interesting combat sports matches I have ever seen from a strategic and tactical point of view.
