The Modern Martial Artist

Mortal Weapons Graphic Novel: www.modernmartialartist.com/mo... 8 years after their first bout, two living legends were set to face off in the ring one more time.
Their first encounter was a true rarity in boxing: two top fighters meeting in their prime to put everything on the line. The fight had been absolutely epic, more than living up to expectations.
Still, the loss was particularly hard for Hearns.
He would later describe the loss as a monster that constantly followed him everywhere he went, ever present even as he racked up accolades and titles in multiple divisions.
Like Thomas Hearns, Sugar Ray was beginning to show his age.
Although both fighters were both still among the best, they no longer seemed invincible. Sadly, a good deal of Leonard’s performance could most likely be attributed to personal problems.
Problems that he was only now just beginning to work his way through. Fittingly, he would begin to face his deepest fears the same time he prepared to face the only man he had ever been afraid of.
As the two fighters faced off in the center of the ring, Ray realized that one thing had not changed. He was still terrified of Hearns.

SRL's corner told him at the end of rd 11, ' You need to KO him to win ' I think its fair to say that these Guys know more about Boxing than we do, in fairness to Ray, he tried desperately but just failed, I had Tommy winning by 2pts but in reality , Tommy needed to KO Leonard to win this fight, which is very wrong . We have to be honest here Guys, if Leonard floored Tommy twice in seperate rds and it went the distance , the exact same way here, do you honestly think it would have been a draw?

@Mexican Catholic I'm good. Thanks! Mickey Mantle, any number of great "All-American boys," baseball players during the golden era, took greenies, a kind of amphetamine to make it through double-headers. The great Joe Louis, post-career, had a serious heroin problem people are only writing about now, (at length), which is tragic since Louis is not only a great fighter but genuinely good man, someone who didn't manage post-career earnings quite well, fallen on hard times, pray to addiction as "self-medicating." Then we have Sonny Liston's death, alone a subject of controversy -- (the mob: if Liston, see the Mob) -- Liston fought only six months before (I believe) passing, in his mid-to-late 40s, and nearly undefeated since his bizarre second loss to an Ali still calling himself Clay. It's a huge unfair advantage. Imagine between rounds: a bump; then a B12-shot; some morphine for pain... what have you, that is: if you can still get off the stool; boggles the mind.

The boxers said Leonard lost. The judges, and the audience, wondered what loser had entered the ring. I almost think the draw was not called to be accurate, but to let everyone know that to call a loser in that brawl would almost be lying in a way. any kudos he might have possessed was absent when he shockingly & shamelessly manipulated DL into fighting....colluding with the corrupt WBC president JS. JS conjuring up the SMW category for SRL & forcing DL down to 168 lbs (7 lbs under the LHW limit) with a 1m dollar penalty to his purse for every pound he weighed in over 168. Leonard made the lower limit in his tracksuit with the pockets filled with coins. So SRL won the WBC SMW & LHW titles against an emaciated DL, despite not making the weight. no kudos in that fiasco, right?

I know there are people that don’t like SRL because of his personality and fight with Hagler but never because he made Duran quit. And you wish that SRL would’ve said that he had stomach cramps against Duran in Montreal? You are not making any sense, SRL lost to Duran because he fell for Duran’s tactics and style of brawling. Underrated fight. Was treated like a ‘past their prime fight’, with Tommy getting robbed. But was actually an all-time great fight, between two fighters somewhat passed their primes, but still an instant classic. Similar to the Thrilla in Manila, where it was still an extraordinary fight, even though Frazier really had only ‘one great fight’ left in him.

Chuck Coulter Sry didnt see your comment before. Ali said it after 3rd fight, and to be honest the 3rd fight which was very controversial was a big mess for me. I always thought Ali won, but then I started scoring and tye problem is that so many rounds could go either way... I had Norton winning by a big margin when I was giving close rounds to him and I had Ali winning by a big margin giving close rounds to him. Also as you saud ali had said that Norton had beat him, but later he changed his version saying that judges see more than us. I will try score Ali Norton 3 once more time, but for me scoring this fight depends on which style you prefer. Judges ofc were favouring Ali, because he was a super star in 1976 but I won’t argue with that, just like I won’t deny if anybody tells me that Norton won. For me the decision was acceptable 100%

@@alekwojcik9030 Thanks for the feedback, Alex. I never knew Ali took his "take" back; he may have been lost in the moment, right after a tough fight and felt like he could have done better. The close rounds are ultra-hard to call. I think I tend to root for the underdog, sometimes, rather than be objective. Let me know what your next score comes out like; now, say, Hagler-Leonard, that feels like another one where you see these takes: some want close rounds for Leonard, coming back after injury, some for Hagler, because Hagler has been robbed before. Best!
@alekwojcik9030
@alekwojcik9030 4 жыл бұрын
Chuck Coulter Thank you very nice for such nice words. Yes Ali in 1979 when asked about Norton fight said that he had beaten him, but there were skme stories that he said to Norton that he had won their 3rd fight. I find it confusing honestly. Also I don’t know if you are aware that there was supposed to be a 4th match between Ali and Kenny in 1978, but Ali lost to Spinks and tge fight never happened, so Ali probably didn’t feel right about his victory over Kenny. Also in 1977 before Evangelista fight he was being interviewed by Howard Cossel and suggested 4th match with Norton due to their last meeting being controversial. About Leonard vs Hagler I must say I am a bit Leonard’s fanboy, and find myself ignorant when it cones to the fight with Hagler even though I saw it many times. The truth is that for many the fact alone that Leonard made this fight competetive was sufficient enough to declare him the winner, which is unjust of course when it comes to scoring. 1 judge gave Leonard 118-110 which is ridiculous. Also many rounds were very close and confusing in this case. I personally never scored this fight so I can say much about the verdict, but I saw a great video on yt channek called Rummy’s corner who had Hagler winning by close margin, but said that many rounds could go either way, and he is not mad that Leo won, because of that. It was a great video and I suggest you watch this. I guess I have to finally sit down and watch both men ver closely and get as honest opinion as I can. Wish you all best, and let me know what you think about Leonard vs Hagler😁

@@alekwojcik9030 Will do... now see, I was a Hagler-mark; my first book on boxing featured him on the cover. Some of Hagler's family, his father, was local. I need to re-watch. Like you, I believe Sugar making it highly competitive made even non-scoring journalists fantasize about a mini-Ali, bright, ultra-talented (the bouts with Duran/Hearns alone), an ultimate comeback ... it was also Hagler's big pay-day, in exchange (bad choice) for a larger ring and slightly bigger gloves. I can say my wife was sparring at a Palisades, CA dojo, a light martial arts novice, when she was matched with Ray Leonard, retired, to practice a move. She said he was a total gentleman, very friendly, self-effacing, no falseness about him, which is always good to hear. I love Ali and Leonard - I think culturally, spiritually - I tend to root for the "also-rans," the secondary legends - for us, Thomas Hearns is huge... It's stunning when you don't see a bigger obit for Pernell Whitaker; so, to the mass of non-boxing fans, they know Ali, perhaps Leonard, and Foreman as someone with a grill. :) let alone Norton, Ron Lyle, Earnie Shavers... how I wish Norton would have beaten Holmes. A fourth? That would have been majestic and odd at the same time; maybe it would have bonded the men more in memory.

I've sat through about a half dozen of your videos The Modern Martial Artist and I have to say I found each fight breakdown and analysis to be fantastically well done. From Ali vs Frazier to Duran vs Leonard to these two fights with Hearns and Leonard it takes me back to the early and mid 80's, sitting on the couch with my grandfather, "papaw" Linel and watching some of these on, I want to say ABC, as they would show older fights and fights that had just happened back then and on occasion live fights. November 2, 1985 we lost my papaw, I had just turned 11 a few days before, but I can enjoy your breakdowns and it takes me back to a young boy sitting with the only male role model he had and how that man loved his boxing. He would elbow you and move around that couch like he was in that ring with them. Thank you for such a well done video, God Bless and thanks for reading.

Excellent analysis thank you! Leonard was fascinating because during a fight you could see, after a few rounds or so, he would enter into a zone (and probably not come out like three days later) and stay there no matter what. You could see it very clearly in this fight. It's a wonderful skill. Tremendous intelligence and heart. Smarter than even Ali I think, and humbler.

Everyone always talks about Hearns as an afterthought (aside from his punching power) when it comes to The Four. It's always SRL's slick boxing or Hagler's chrome dome head. But Hearns was SO MUCH more than his jab/overhand. He was a terrifying puncher AND an amazing boxer on top of it. Thank you for doing my favorite boxer right and giving him a proper showing.

Hearns would have been the GOAT if he had an iron chin
@DeCurtaRican
@DeCurtaRican 3 жыл бұрын
His chin was good, it was his legs and footwork that often failed him. You would like to have seen him box more, pump that beautiful left jab like the fictitious Apollo Creed, but he didn’t do it. He was like a really quick basketball player who would never use his quickness. If you have height, long arms and a powerful jab, you should use it. I’m sure Ali would have told him to use it more. Hearns could have beaten Hagler if his legs had been better, and if he hadn’t allowed Hagler to lure him into a brawl. And he could have knocked out Leonard if his legs had been better. His chin was good enough, and he proved that.
@muder0989
@muder0989 3 жыл бұрын
His chin wasn't the problem. It was the insane competition he had to contend with. That's why hes seen as a all time great but also why people criticize him. It's a unfair double edge sword but ultimately that's the cost of being great.

Hearns only had a 78 inch reach, yet in all of his fights, it looks like his arms are longer than he is tall. For comparison, SRL's reach was only 4 inches shorter, still long for the weight class. Dillian Whyte, 50lbs heavier than Hearns, 3 inches taller and also has long arms compared to his torso, also has a 78 inch reach.
@The_PainofBeingAMan
@The_PainofBeingAMan 4 жыл бұрын
Wingspans are hard to and rarely measured accurately...a slight shift can alter by inches. Also note it's not a true measure of arm length, it contains the hands, fingers, and width of the back. It's clear Hearns had considerably longer arms than Leonard and most of his opponents.
