Love & Basketball is a really well made movie and very deserving of a movie commentary and reaction video. A well written, multi faceted story, Love & Basketball follows the lives of Quincy and Monica, from childhood into adulthood. It's a shame that this movie isn't more well known because it absolutely should be!

Fun fact! Both actors Omar and sanaa where in a real life relationship while filming this movie. It’s was unknown to the director at the time of their audition. Fun fact: Sanaa Lathan's scar is real! They wrote it into the movie! Also they make every shot in the movie themselves! Omar & Sanaa actually had to learn to play bc the director Gina Prince Bythewood didn't want them to fake any of the basketball. Gina the director, also makes a cameo in the film!

The scar story is kind of crazy. She was trying to make playdoh art by herself as a kid. I think her mom put the art in the oven for her to bake and she tried to take it out without help. It like fipped off the cookie sheet when she tried to get it off with a spatula and stuck to her face. When they pulled the hot playdoh off it took skin.

I agree. I'm glad that other people also feel iffy about that storyline. Like you said, Monica put in the most effort in their relationship. She had held a torch for him since they were kids. Quincy may have known her the longest but he didn't have to be the one & only person she ever loved or dated. He tended to focus on his needs without considering her's. But he had a bit more personal & professional problems in the end, so I get why he wasn't always emotionally available. Still, maybe its best if they ended up as just friends. I also wanted to see her find someone better.
@20YearSoul
@20YearSoul 3 жыл бұрын
Because she was more grounded. I think its realistic. She faced more adversity as girl in sports, being new kid etc. I think he did the best he could and did care for her as he knew her basketball stats and wanted to be with her while other girls threw themselves at him but he had no reference of love while she picked up things from her mother's doting even if she resented her for it Monica was so laser focused on basketball only an extension of it could be in her life and Quincy was that. Her only friends were other players. She was all about ball as he stated but he is ball to her

There's a whole collection of films like this one that are staples in the black community. Love Jones, Brown Sugar, Hustle and Flow, The Best Man (1&2), and Poetic Justice to name a few. Not saying you have to react to all of them, just that you have only scratched the surface. If you love this movie, the director/writer Gina Prince-Bythewood also did another movie many years later called "Beyond the Lights" - another love story, a bit more modern setting, but just as emotional. Personally, I like Love and Basketball more, but Beyond the Lights still a good movie.

Also, it's crazy how you don't realize some stuff left a waaaaay bigger imprint on you than you thought, and then rewatching it as an adult and going "oh dang, THAT'S where that came from??" Monica definitely impacted my tomboy phase. As well as the "if you're bickering/fighting, it's because they like you" thing, which is definitely not the greatest takeaway. It's a very well made movie, I think people can dislike the character's choices without inherent disliking the whole movie lol. The director killed it. But Quincy is definitely a spoiled teen boy for most of this and it's mostly Monica's coming of age story so we don't see his growth as much

⭐️Fun Fact: Q’s mother is played by Debbie Morgan who is a famous daytime soap opera actress and played in All My Children and the Young and Restless, so, it stands to reason that she can do a dramatic presentation quite flawlessly and very well. She can go big and loud and dramatic or she can go soft and somber and if there’s any movie I recommend to people with her in it it is Eve’s Bayou I hope the guys do that movie it’s such a good movie it’s one of my favorites. Eve’s Bayou stars Lynn Whitfield, Samuel L Jackson, Debbie Morgan, Diahann Carroll, and a young Jurnee Smollett. It’s the story of a black family in Louisiana in the 50s (very little to no racism because there’s an isolation of the events and an in solution of the characters)and within the family there is this mystic undertones because Debbie Morgan‘s character has premonitions and it’s believed that Eve; the child the story is told through, is also inheriting that gift and there’s a family drama and how that affects her gift. I really hope that the guys see this comment and do that movie I’m gonna go now and look and see if that’s actually in their catalog and if not please add photos so they will no one ever reviews that movie and it’s so good it has such a strong black cast. ☺️

The first two thirds of this movie I thought it was a well done basketball movie made with obvious love and care. But then - holy cow - the final third of this movie just takes it to a whole 'nother level. I was totally caught off guard with how the third act unfolds and the themes and relationships it begins to explore. Totally did not see that coming, was totally invested in it. Love & Basketball transcends being a sports movie and I think everyone should watch it.

I personally love this movie. I see a lot of ppl that dislike it. If you truly analyze the movie it all makes sense. Quincy was Monica’s shoulder throughout the whole movie. He looked up to his dad idolized him, he wanted to be his dad or what he saw his dad to be. Then that image was broken, so by default Quincy is broken and lost. He no longer knows who he is or what it is that he wants. He does know that he loves Monica, so he goes to her in his time of need as she has always done. So this one time he needs her, so desperately. She chooses basketball ball. Now he doesn’t understand this cause he would never and has never chosen basketball over her. (He’s wrong for his next actions for sure) but instead of stringing her along and dogging her out, he lets her go because he loves her too much to even do all that. So when she comes back in his life, he thinks it was a hs/college romance until he sees that he’ll really lose her and realizes what they had was real and he does love her. It’s beautiful story if you ask me especially with the basketball element and her thinking she’s the best and him saying he’s only let her win because he wanted her to and him showing her how true that was but regardless of their deal, he’s choosing her.
