I always gave Orthax a blue-purple colour scheme in my head. But I think this orange-black aesthetic was way better as it contrasts Percy's colour scheme perfectly

Yes, and I think the firey color palette makes me think of vengeance and hatred. The animation and art team REALLY kicked it up a notch for Orthax.

I honestly never really _got_ the smoke aesthetic in connection to vengeance or Percy, but the fire and smoke motif fits the gun/violence/vengeance thing perfectly.

Just for clarity, vampires in D&D have the ability "Charm" on the list of actions they can take and the rules for how that works are just explained in the monster's stat block. It's not a spell that players can use.

Yeah. It's effectively Charm Person, but with the additional control that the charmed person will always protect the vampire that charmed them at any cost.

I think the reason Anders slit Cassandras throat was more of a personal reason and not by direction of the Briarwoods.

In the game, they were ghosts and Scanlan used Vicious Mockery to shame one of Percy's ancestors to death (again)

To be fair, Percy already took two names off the list, and the other two names are both Briarwoods. I imagine Dr. Ripley was mid list to begin with.

They met Ripley before Anders in the game, so at that point, Anders would have been higher up. Which makes sense, since his betrayal of the de Rolo family made it personal.

Cassandra's betrayal was kinda a twist for me. At first, when she was introduced next to Delila I thought she was on the Briarwood's side then Anders killed her and I was questioning it, by episode 9 I was sure she was on Vox Machina's side. They did a pretty good job diverting my expectations.

The thing is... there were more twists and turns in the stream. Her storyline has been drastically simplified, in this version, and yet it works like a Charm Person.

If I remember correctly, Anders slitting her throat was an illusion in the campaign. I know the stand off was actually Vax and Anders, not Percy.

Heavy Metal Scanlan was the coolest add-in I’ve seen yet. There have been good ones but that one sticks out. If any critters are here, do you recall Sam claiming to switch to a rift while using the hand? I know the game was different in game than here but I like how they wrapped this room up for the show

The moment between Pike and Percy did happen in the campaign; Vox Machina's duration at Whitestone left Percy corrupted, and Pike removed one fragment of it.

Never heard of this series until you guys did the voice cast reveal, and the show has been so fun to watch with you guys; while having two different perspectives/experiences. Especially enjoyed Wendy's reactions (😂) & commentary.

Enjoying catching up on your reactions. I really love how the show turned out. They give just the slightest hints about Cassandra's charmed status. When she speaks to Ripley as the group moves away, her eyes are yellow (from the charm) and not blue like usual. It's so subtle because of the lighting in the scene.

This whole sequence blew my mind in the campaign. I just finished C1 after a whole year of listening, and the Briarwood arc was where I was like "okay, I'm in this for the long haul."

The game stuff is fresher in my mind because I just recently started binging the podcast. So there was a bit in there where they found some of Ripley's notes. In them she referred to Percy as "the subject" so I wondered if it was going to turn out that the torture Ripley subjected Percy to was in the form of "scientific" experimentation for some reason.

Based on some of Ripley's words in the animation... I wonder if her origins are different from the stream. Because if they're not, those origins solidify my hatred even more for her. I'm right there with Percy! Sure, they did need to use her for the moment, but... damn. I wouldn't be able to tell Percy not to do it. In fact, I'd be right there at the bars, snapping at her like a rabid dog.

(C2 spoilers) Since Delilah would have been at the Assembly as the same time as Trent, I wonder if there was some Volstrucker-inspired manipulation along with magical control of Cassandra - or if a Cerberus Assembly member sacrificing everything for a lover might have motivated the Assembly to have elite assassins kill off their own families before they could risk turning out the same

Fun fact: in the campaign, even Cassandra's throat cut by Anders was just an illusion created to give Anders an advantage in battle and help to establish Cassandra as the "poor victim"...

i don't think so, it was vax who opened the door and engaged the fight with anders and it was really cassandra (if i remember correctly, last time i watched this episode was probably 4 or 5 years ago)

Can someone explain to me why Cassandra wanted to save Ripley though? It seems like the Briarwoods weren’t even aware that she was out of her cell and we perfectly happy to kill her in the acid trap.

It was a compulsion of Cassandra being charmed. If you look closely when she speaks to Ripley alone, her eyes are yellow and not blue! The "we" in her sentence was something that came across to me as meaning the Briarwoods, not Vox Machina.

I always pictured the ziggurat as a huge white place. I was very thrown off the colour palate.

As soon as we got to Cassandra I said she was going to betray them and it would be the “he left me behind” accusation born of a misunderstanding. She was riddled with arrows, did she expect him to return and carry her when he clearly thought she was dead? I mean I get it, but to me that was pretty weak and definitely telescoped. I mean she was alive and had been with them for years. Did none of them think for a second they might have done something to her to turn her?

You are misunderstanding the situation. For years she has been manipulated by Sylas charm abilities to the point where he doesnt have to have her in full control all the time she does things for the Briarwoods that they want without realizing they might not be in control at the time. And one of the things that is the worst part is when people have been seeing this just like in the real world they are blaming the victim in this case Cassandra not the abuser who has messed with her mind for years which is Sylas
