From Star Trek Discovery to Minority Report to The Expanse … if there’s one thing science fiction agrees on, it’s that our collective future will run on transparent displays. So imagine my surprise when I learned that a clear-screened cellphone was not only just an eBay away … but also, over ten years old!
The year is 2009. Sony and Ericsson are eight years into a strategic partnership that has produced some of the decade’s most distinctive devices - and to propel that reputation into the 2010s, the combined company has dreamed up the Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness (a.k.a. the Sony Ericsson X5). It's a tiny phone with no camera, no GPS, no removable memory ... but it does pack one feature no other phone of its time does (and no other phone will offer for the next decade at least): a transparent display!
Join me for the latest installment of MrMobile's When Phones Were Fun, featuring the clear-screened Sony Xperia Pureness!

[ABOUT WHEN PHONES WERE FUN - SONY XPERIA PURENESS]
This is the sixth in a series of MrMobile videos exploring the mobile tech world's most vibrant period in design and experimentation. In “When Phones Were Fun,” Michael Fisher re-reviews cellphones from the golden age of mobile, the decade-long span from the turn of the century to approximately 2009.
When Phones Were Fun: Episode 6 features a Sony Xperia Pureness vintage cell phone purchased by MrMobile on eBay. No company paid a fee or otherwise offered compensation in exchange for this coverage, nor did any company preview or approve this content before publication.

It was fun. Phones were more like accessories, and we had different form factors to choose from. However, I'll take the functional rectangular glass slab that is the modern smartphone any day. It is the natural evolution of hardware and software for a small form factor computer.

the reason most phones are the same these days is because the majority of those form factors suck for anything other than looking cool, especially if you want to use them for more than just calls and texting

I think you are confusing a few things here: Remember the N95 or the E90? Nokia was way more advanced than SE, only in the mid nineties, SE had a small advantage and it was actually Ericsson only. 😉

It's really not that easy to do. The best you could do is transparent casing for phones, so you can see the internals.

Why would you want it to be common? The fact that its transparent means everything on the screen is hard to see, because everything behind is is shining through. Why not just live in a transparent house? Just because it looks cool in a sci-fi movie doesn't mean it makes practical sense in the real world

This phone reminds me a lot of my first cell phone back in 2010. It was the LG Crystal, but unlike the Pureness with its transparent screen, the Crystal had a transparent keyboard/dialpad. I thought it was the coolest thing ever...until I remembered the iPhone 4 existed.

Thanks again for the 😷 shout out! Man, that screen looked amazing. I'm glad I didn't see this phone when it came out, I would have been seriously tempted I think. I mean I got the Nokia 8810 because silver shiny and reminiscent of the matrix phone. B/W screen as well as no SMS. I even had to carry it around it's cloth pouch because I didn't want to scratch it. But boy did it make a statement whenever I did take it out. XD Thanks for the amazing blast from the past with this Sony. Which will always be around us... like air.

Just wish we would see more creativity with phone design. Steve Jobs left us stuck with his initial design, and it is a fundamentally boring one, despite the capabilities.
@lander77477

I think its the fact that the iphone and phones that copy the iphone design simply got it right, and there's not much to improve upon. You might as well wish for there to be more creativity with a hammer, or screw driver, or a brick, or an elevator, or a bicycle. Sometimes the best and most sensible design gets created, and sticks around because its just about perfect.

I mean it's just a display that fits in your pocket. There's not much that can be changed about that without making it crap. There is some variation in phones (size ratios, colors, front and back displays, curved screens, pop-up front cameras, flip-phone comeback, etc), but in the end of the day it's a rectangle screen, and if you try to make it a triangle it will just suck.

An example of creative phone design was the Palm Pre in 2009. Fit in your hand perfectly, as did the original iPhone, but Palm had fallen behind in the phone market and not enough interest was generated. Creative designers could come up with very fresh approaches to phone design but the huge library of apps that require compatabiliy with existing phones makes the effort useless.

I think we're stuck in a period where most of the products essential designs are already adequately perfected. Planes, cars, refrigerators, guns... they're mostly looks the same unless somebody takes some effort to put some bells and whistles.

Sony Ericsson used to make realy unique phones back in the day like Cybershot and Walkman series Im still a big fan of Sony and will always will be. They were one of the first to make water proof phones, 4K panels, ultra slow motion, Insanely good Exmor RS sensors in phones even the Huawei P30 Pro incredible 40 MP Super Sensing Camera is made by Sony. I simply love how they integrate their consumer products technology into their smart phone which simply makes it so much better than other manufacturers.

No, that’s not true at all. Here in the States where GSM phones only made up for half the market, there were a glut of CDMA phones on Verizon and Sprint that never featured FM tuners. Same for most smartphones of the period. Even GSM phones lacked FM tuners if the carriers that launched them decided they wanted to disable the feature to force people to use their streaming data services.

6:04 speaking of James Bond and Sony Ericsson - I owned a Sony Ericsson K800i back in the day (the one on the Bond website but in an orange brownish color instead of the silver). It was a very very capable mobile phone and I loved the video and photo editing functions. If you have the time and if you think that it’s interesting enough, maybe you could make a video about it. I would love to hear what you got to say about the K800i. :) Mine is still lying around in the house somewhere...

I remember I had an Xperia X10 mini and then the X10 mini pro came out and I wanted it so bad because the phone was so tiny that it still used T9 texting even though it was a touch screen. But my only other Sony phone after that was the first Xperia Z which got water damage due to glue coming slightly undone and water getting in even though it was rated for water resistance. Since then there wasn’t an Xperia I could justify buying because by the point my Z drowned the Xperia line cost as much as iPhones but one could argue they weren’t worth that price
