This was the last of Poulenc's five concertos. While in the first fifteen years of his career Poulenc had made a reputation as a light-hearted composer, personal crises in the late 1930s awakened a dormant religious sensibility. Thereafter, including the war years, he had written music of considerably more seriousness of purpose, but even in them retained his lightness of touch and his ability to charm. After the war ended, restoring communication between Paris and America, the Boston Symphony Orchestra commissioned this piano concerto from Poulenc. It was premiered by that orchestra, conducted by Charles Munch on January 6, 1950, with the composer as soloist.
Now Poulenc returned, for this composition, to his earlier breezy style. The composition is in three movements, each smaller than the previous one; their lengths are about ten, five and a half, and four minutes. The piano is not treated as an individual protagonist against the orchestra, but as a part of the entire ensemble.
The concerto opens with the piano playing one of Poulenc's rhythmic ideas of faux gruffness, which is countered by a lovely tune on English horn. Reminiscent of various Rachmaninoff themes, the movement meanders here and there, never quite making up its mind; there are subdued hints of the approaching Poulenc opera "Dialogues of the Carmelites."
The slow second movement is tender, with a sense of some sadness, using a string melody introduced with softly marching rhythms in the horns. The movement then acquires a certain airy repose after the start.
The finale is called Rondeau à la française and is in a very fast tempo. In one of the final episodes, a tune appears which has been traced back to A la claire fontaine, an old sea chanty dating back to the time of Lafayette. Its first few notes are the same as that of Foster's song "Old Folks at Home" (or "Swanee River"), which some French commentators have mid-identified as a "Negro spiritual." Poulenc blends it, surprisingly, with a Brazilian maxixe rhythm.
The concerto was not particularly well received, though; and was noted that there was "more sympathy than real enthusiasm," which the composer attributed to the notion that the audience had listened to too much Sibelius. One critic wrote in Le Figaro: "Certainly it isn’t a concerto at all but a little picture of manners, done up by a minor master." But Poulenc wrote: "I lead an austere existence in this very Puritan town."

You've stolen my comment... OK. I am not 71, I am 35 but I am the "concert pianist" and I did not know this concerto. Till today. :) ... And now I just wanna play it. But this looks to me little bit like a Ravel concerto. Not that difficult for the (skilled) pianist but VERY demanding for the orchestra. Many solos, needs great wood/brass players... etc. which is little bit "trouble".

Long after most composers and critics believed that tonal music no longer provided material adequate to create new original compositions Poulenc still found in basically traditional tonality the material he needed to create very appealing and original-sounding, significant compositions in many major large and small-scale forms. from solo piano to chamber ensembles to symphonies. Furthermore, his work has withstood the test of time and is by now, being highly appealing and original sounding very popular with audiences and musicians alike and as such has become securely ensconced in the standard repertoire.

I know I’m about 4 years late but there are some other composers kinda like Poulenc (although he is pretty much his own thing). Other members of Les Six for example: Georges Auric. Also Jean Cras, Emmanuel Chabrier and Jean Françaix are a bit like Poulenc (Jean Cras is also reminiscent of Ravel though).

This is a masterwork by a great composer! Why isn't it performed more often? Yes, Poulenc wrote so much and most of it is great, but this is never performed. Hey, pianists out there, forget the Rach 3rd for a minute and dig this one out and perform it as a tribute to a great composer. The great composer Terry Riley performed this at a Senior Piano Recital at San Francisco State with your's truly playing the other piano. Terry had great taste even in his student days. Terry did a great job with it and the rest is history. (Hi, Terry!!!)

Unfortunately, too many musicians in conservatory (I am a fifth year piano-comp. double major) tend to go for the traditional (this is something that is going to take more than individual effort).. despite that, it is wonderful to see people like yourself encourage more than daily 'listening-repetitions'!

It's extremely common in jazz. It's simply a C#7 chord with an added D and A#. The D creates dissonance with C# and the A# conflicts with the B. As a lightly experienced jazz pianist I play this chord quite often, and I would add an E and/or G. Sounds really Gershwin!

Clearly the source for John Williams's Harry Potter theme. I like John Williams because he borrows from the past and , in effect, teases us to find out from whom, in effect, educating us and opening up orchestral music to us. He says borrowing is a part of his Hollywood craft, and I guess he leaves it to us to make the connection, to do the research. His first Star Wars soundtrack was a compendium of various classical styles (and, with the main theme, movie score approaches). So when most people hear Stravinsky, for example, they think 'Jawas'... which is not a bad thing, since it is the connection that is intriguing, and it worked...

Long story short behind this video: I was actually supposed to upload a concerto by another composer (guess whose piano concerto am I talking about; you get to win a free holographic cookie if you got it right -- there is a pattern in the whole tribute and is a big clue, albeit obscure), but I decided to stall it -- as the only complete recording I can find will get blocked for sure, and the other recording I got was so very "bad" in a sense that the performers kept skipping a lot of parts there (much a worse case than the previous video) that I was on the brink of "depression". And then I decided to go for this piece. Nonetheless, thank you very much for staying with me -- or us, for this whole tribute, which, while it would make sense as well to do it all in one go (like one upload a day since the start of this tribute), I never got around that. Main reason is I'm a lazy-ass bitch. Second reason maybe is to get the uploads enough "exposure time" (if you know what I'm saying). Please stay tuned for more uploads. Let's celebrate again soon, ladies and gentlemen. -- thenameisgsarci

How do you upload a video 'safe' without copyright risks??
@thenameisgsarci
@thenameisgsarci 8 жыл бұрын
Nowadays, the only procedure on making videos without strikes is to not upload at all. (jk XD) In my case though, it's a game of risk and chance -- and acceptance. Some record companies are lax about such concerns, some are very strict up to the point of blocking. Who knows which videos will be blocked tomorrow or next week or a month from now.

Fine, I'll tell you the clue... 1) All the piano concertos featured in this tribute cover an equal amount of major and minor key signatures (save for this one, because of the dilemma). 2) If you've got a good sense, you'll notice one thing that is very common with the piano concertos featured. At least, almost all of them, though. Good luck with the hunt. ;D

2) The composers are all French?? Are they?

Clue No. 3: Not all of them are French, but they are all European, with the exception of Ornstein, who is Russian-American.

No, it's not. Here are the clues: 1) All the piano concertos featured in this tribute cover an equal amount of major and minor key signatures (save for this one, because of the dilemma -- and Ornstein's, maybe). Fine, I'll tell you: the piano concerto I was supposed to upload was composed in the key of C-sharp major. 2) All of the piano concertos featured are the only ones the composers have written for the "piano concerto" category. At least, the only published piano concertos... with the name "piano concerto" on it. 3) All of the composers mentioned are European... or at least have European roots (like Ornstein), or have lived in Europe (like Hahn). 4) All the piano concertos have three movements. Pretty much, that is the scenario. 5) All of the piano concertos featured are for piano solo. 6) All of the composers mentioned are very accomplished at their instruments. Perhaps. 7) All of the composers mentioned are born in the 19th century, with the exception of Berwald.

Bravo to the performance. If Poulenc could play it anything like this, he must have been quite a pianist himself. But it doesn't exactly end pp (ppp in orch) as indicated! That would have been more effective. If you have a will o' the wisp ending, you might as well make the most of it and truly whisper. Speaking more generally, is there a reason that recording artists so often do not follow indications for pp's?

So, when is your book coming out? I kid you. I suspect the answer to the original question is much, much simpler. Either A) A performer is careless or lacks dynamic control at that moment or B) The record producer or sound engineer is afraid to allow too much variation in the volume level and wants to keep it within a certain range. These suggested explanations will cover the vast majority of cases. But thanks for torturing your soul for a reply! More generally, I would suppose that if the composer knew what he was doing artistically, the dynamic indication will have been correct. If the music sounds more convincing or natural with a different touch, then the composer was wrong in his marking. ........... It is too late at night for this.........

Or - since many of the very greatest pianists deviate here and there from dynamic instructions - the performer has her or his own ideas about how to best bring to the fore the musical ideas implicit in the score Another thing is the editions we typically work with we aren[t urtext and contain someone else's ideas about how the score should be performed. Often it's the performer who's done the greater amount of research than the listener
