In 2010 I did a day-trip on the Orient Express with a friend. Start at 10AM at Paddington, London, with a Champagne reception then board the train for breakfast. You have an assigned table in a Pullman car with around 18 seats per carriage - tables for four on one side of the isle and tables for two on the other side. The train went south-west to Kent with wonderful views while they served lunch, then turned north and followed the Thames Estuary back towards London. After afternoon tea we all transfered to a coach to visit a Stately Home for a couple of hours before getting back on the train for dinner and the run into Paddington, getting in at around 9PM. £300.00 and worth every single penny. Just to put the tin-lid on the experience my friend got up to powder her nose and as she left the carriage there was a slight bump and the lights flickered. The lady on the table across the isle said to me, "I hope your friend will be alright," and I replied, "She'll probably disappear and everyone will deny she was ever here," (The Lady Vanishes - Hitchcock). The lady's companion, God love him, said, "I don't know what you mean, you've been sitting at that table alone all day!"

About 20 years ago, my wife and I did a day trip on the Orient express. (It included a visit to Hampton Court Palace if I remember correctly.) I can`t recall the cost, other than it being expensive, but it was well worth it. Incidentally, am I the only person who thinks the chap in the video might have taken the trouble to wear a tie?

My sister (who is married to a doctor) travelled on it once. Also on board was David Suchet/Hercule Poirot, but there wasn't a murder.

I went on the Eastern and Oriental Express with my husband for our 25th wedding anniversary. We flew to Singapore to get on the train. Through Singapore and Malaysia to Thailand. This was 25 years ago. Omar Sharif and his wife were on the table next to us when we went to dinner. A lovely couple. The train was just like the one in this video. It was wonderful. I'm so glad we did it as my husband died unexpectedly a year later from a very rare cancer. I have some wonderful memories.

I've never been on the Orient Express, but I've covered all of this route on ordinary trains. The views in Switzerland are every bit as good as you think they are, and there are five or six routes worth trying through that country. When you arrive in Venice, you arrive at Santa Lucia station, and it's the most remarkable way to arrive. You step off the train, collect your luggage and walk out of the front, like any ordinary station... And then you realise what city you are truly in. This is Venice. You're standing alongside the Grand Canal. Instead of a bus stop or a metro station, like any normal station, you see a little quay, and there's the mooring for the vaporetto - the Venetian waterbus - which is the public transport system for the city of Venice. You can walk around most of Venice, though every few dozen yards you have to climb the stairs to go over yet another little bridge over a canal, but if you want to get anywhere in a reasonable amount of time, you need to take the vaporetto. You look along the canal and you see the Scalzi bridge, just a hundred yards or so downstream. There is that real sense of that scene in the Wizard of Oz: "Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore". There is, I suspect, only one better way to arrive in Venice, and that's to come in by sea, as so many did for centuries into that great trading port - in the same way that the best way to arrive in New York is on an ocean liner. But Venice, these days, is crowded with cruise ships, so to arrive by sea in a way that really matches the proper glories of the city means doing so on a private yacht: and if you thought the Orient Express was out of your budget, then you don't even want to ask what a yacht rental would cost. One thing I will say about Belmond's Venice-Simplon Orient Express: most of the carriages are original LX carriages from the 1920s and 1930s, made by the "Compagnie International des Wagons-Lits" and the furnishings are mostly original. The Suites and Grand Suites are in converted S1 carriages, which are actually the second-class carriage of the era, which means that when they stripped them bare to move all the internal walls, put in the showers and put in the modern Art Deco-style furnishings, they weren't ripping out original interiors of any significance. So, the cheaper experience is more historically accurate. The normal route for the VSOE is Calais-Paris-Venice (always via Switzerland, which is the "Simplon" in the name, as the original route was via the Simplon tunnel), but it takes the route of the original Orient Express from Paris to Istanbul (in three days) once a year; tickets for this route are notoriously difficult to get, even at the astronomical prices that they charge. I wish there were conventional sleeping trains running on a schedule at a reasonable price on the Istanbul route again: comfortable regular sleepers run as far as Budapest, but the service drops dramatically in quality and reliability between there and the Turkish border, i.e. through Romania and Bulgaria. Of course, the VSOE doesn't allow their service to slip!

On the bit concerning Switzerland? I can ashore you its a magical, gorgeous, magnificent Country. I just comeback from there 2 weeks ago, and I miss it big time, yes, its an expensive holiday, but if you have family like I do, or friends where you can stay, it gets more affordable. The other thing, the cameras, no matter how high-tech they are, they don't really show the magnitude, and beauty of this places, every single trip I had, I was continuously using the expression WOW! such beauty was having an emotional effect, a wonderful one. If you have the chance, you will fall in love with Switzerland like I have, cant wait for my next visit.

My Orient Express bucket list is to go from Paris to Istanbul - the iconic trip. 5 nights departing just once a year. But that carpet? Seriously, it's beautiful, and in a whole other league than cinema carpets.

When I was living in London, my commuter train was docking every morning at Victoria Station, just next to ... The Orient Express .... I'd ride the dull underground to work with starry dreams in my head, ignoring the drab surroundings.

We travelled twice on the VSOE - London to Venice and a few years later Paris to London. The second trip in particular was a very good choice. There was an enormous storm in the Channel and the planned crossing had to be changed. The VSOE people did everything to change the ports both sides of the Channel - we arrived at the new departure and found a ferry awaiting us with space set aside for the trainload. Staff were present to help those who were not coping with the seas. Those travelling further than London were identified and arrangements made to assist them After a rough crossing, we arrived at the new arrival point with the English train waiting to take us on to London.

The National Railway Museum (who did the Royal Train video you saw) just recently put up a lovely video all about The Flying Scotsman to celebrate its 100th anniversary. This particular video highlights the stories of people connected to such an iconic steam train. Its rather moving. It helps give a different appreciation to how important something like that can be to someone. I took my godmother on the British Pulman for dinner, almost 30yrs ago. We went from Glasgow to Perth & return, it was magnificent. Not as expensive as the trip your viewing, but a considered cost. Soo worth it if you can. If your going to watch Murder on the Orient Express, ITV's version with the best Poriot imo Sir David Suchet is great. Think you might get it on KZfaq.

Whilst the Swiss and Italian Railways are beautiful and the scenery is sublime, I would also recommend the most scenic voyage in the World: The Hurtigruten round trip Bergen to Kirkness and back. Take either the summer voyage (and at times, 24 hour daylight) or the winter Voyage (with at times 24 hour darkness AND the possibility of the Northern Lights).

Some years ago I was working as an adventure guide, rafting and canyoning, in the small town of Roppen in Austria next to the Inn river where we did the raft trips. Our base there was an old inn besides the small railway station there. One day the Orient Express came through and actually stopped only metres away for several minutes to let another train past before continuing. We were able to wander alongside it and see inside and it really is amazing! Closest I will ever get to travelling on it!

My wife and i have been on the Northern Bells day trips twice when it was part of the Orient Express on our 25th and 40th wedding anniversaries. Loved every moment on board even though only for a day . From the moment we arrived at the station we were greeted and treated like royalty . Nothing was to much trouble for the staff and the food was delicious . If you get accoss to the uk you must try one of the many train trips available from the basic , bring or buy your own food , to the full dining experience . We have also arrived in Venice onboard a train unfirtunatley not the VSOE , and then travelled to the airport by taxi boat acroos the lagoon .

When the OE was first run from London in the 1970s, the train was parked up in Victoria station for a while, allowing the public to wander through it. It was absolutely mind blowing. The train originally ran from London to Istanbul, and the cost back then included a flight back to England on Concorde.

Wow ladies now that would be a treat to take a ride on The Orient Express and boy would you need some Buy Me A Coffee (or a few thousand) to get there! Hi Natasha and Debbie. Trek Trendy also does the luxury trains in Canada, the Rocky Mountaineer (I have done three different routes) and The Canadian. Trek Trendy also does the Alaska Railroad (which I have also done). All very much worth doing. Debbie, I have done most of mainland Italy, Sardinia, and Sicily by train. Naples (Napoli) to the toe of Italy (Reggio do Calabria) is one of the most beautiful railway lines. 7,000 ft mountains and volcanoes on one side, and the beach with blue seas on the other. Rated as in the top 20 for Europe. Personal favourite, is Bergen to Oslo, Norway.

Ladies, if you thought this was something, you might like to check out his journeys on The Andean Explorer (South America) and even better Rovos Rail (South Africa). If you thought the room on The Orient Express was something, the Rovos Rail one will blow you away.

My workplace desk is a few yards away overlooking the line out of London to the English Channel and it's always a treat to watch the British Pullman Orient Express train go by with it's beautiful train cars from the 1930's and glimpses of the interiors through the windows. There is sometimes a similar excursion train pulled by steam locomotive which is a very special treat. Somehow they schedule these trains between the ordinary and intensively timetabled suburban rail services. I heard that they are going to stop the UK leg of the Orient Express because since Brexit the passport control takes too long and spoils the trip so people will always need to get the High Speed Channel Tunnel train to France first (like they did in the video anyway). Lovely reaction.

the express started in 1883 and travelled from Paris to Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, Budapest, Bucharest before arriving in Istanbul. the First and second world wars put a stop to that, the original train carriages were scattered all over Europe, some were scrapped, but some have been discovered and renovated, the stories of spies using the train to travel around Europe are basically true and of course the rich and famous.

A few years ago we caught the Bernina Express from Switzerland to Italy. It's an actual commuter train so nothing luxurious but the scenery is absolutely amazing. Well worth considering if you want to travel to Italy and are on a budget.

The carpet pattern is art-deco which is the style of the 1920s hence the Charleston music too. ✌️♥️🇬🇧

When you come to the UK you might like to look at the afternoon tea experience on the Orient Express. Nothing comparable to the long trip but it will give you the chance to ride the train through England's south east and have a lovely tea too - much more affordable!

I worked on Superyachts for over 25 years. Y'know, the big ones with helicopters and 4 speedboats onboard. A train will never be luxury, you can't go where you want.

I did a day trip on the Orient Express and it truly is beautiful, the food is incredible and the service I have never experienced since even on formal cruises. The carriage we were in was used in Churchill’s funeral and films.

I wish there was an option to do a 7 day trip from Paris to Venice or even further to Istanbul, with enough time to go and explore a small town in France, a village in the French Alps, Verona, Venice, then back on the train and on to the next destination. So much nicer than a cruise. I'm aware the distances are short but I wouldn't mind getting on the train for a late dinner and it stopping at midnight until I'm ready to explore the next amazing destination after breakfast in the morning. Also, I wish I'd won the lottery.

There are day trips on the Orient Express, I took my mum for her 80th birthday. Went from Victoria Station in London to the Kent Coast, although there are other choices. Brunch on the way down, couple of hours in Hastings, and dinner on the way back. It was a great experience and well worth the price, £250 per person, but it was a few years ago so don't know what it would be now.

Given how much you liked this one you might also want to look into the Royal Scotsman. It’s a rather different but similarly luxurious (and expensive unfortunately) rail trip around Scotland.

I'm British and working class, but this guy's idea of 'formal' is baffling :p. Extraordinary train though. My big issue is how short the journey is. If I'm paying a fortune for a luxury train, I want a few days! Orient express used to do Paris to Istanbul and it took a week, that would be much more reasonable.

Out of pure coincidence my mum Barbara and her friend Audrey were both put in carriages with the same name, my mum was well chuffed until the butler told them that they were the carriages were used by the nazis in the war for brothels! True.

I used to live in folkestone, Kent, and the orient Express used to come down to the harbour every week , so people could catch the ferry to France ! Beautiful train .

Waw, that was amazing. Just one question: How do you get back from Venice? Any other transport would feel inferior.

Train is beautiful it would be a class trip with the scenery beautiful too.

One thing you may or may not be aware of, if you go for an entry level cabin - ie. not a suite, either grand or regular - your cabin only has a vanity unit with a sink - there are no showers, and there is only ONE TOILET PER CARRIAGE! And those entry level cabins are still not exactly cheap! This is why I have never seriously looked at the Orient Express, because unless a suite is within my price range, there is no way that I am travelling on that thing - I would much rather take a standard scenic railway and stop in some really nice hotels along the way.

The wood you are referring to appears to be Russian Birch. A very expensive and exclusive timber.

If you'll like something more modern and sleek in luxurious rail travel, I recomend both Japanese Twilight Mizukazi and Shiki-Shima sleeper train's. The regality of the Orient Express where the colours clash doesn't do it for me as I like a room to look spacious and airy with a lot less wood.
