11:30...I'm afraid this kind of store is long gone in the UK too but was very common all over the country when I was a kid (in the 1970s & 80s). I know you said you weren't gonna do many tv reaction vids but since you seemed to enjoy 4 Candles I still feel obligated to recommend The Two Ronnies 'Racing Duck' sketch but obviously if you can't or feel disinclined to do another reaction then I quite understand 😉😊🥰

Something I wanted to share with you ..I am from UK and on a holiday in Mozambique genuinely went into a store...well shack...with the intention of buying candles...we had a power cut and no electricity. I asked for four candles and the locals fell about recreating this sketch. Thousands of miles from where it originated.

Ronnie Barker often wrote school-boy vulgarity into his sketches. John Cleese said that this was his only slight criticism of Barker's humour - John specifically said that RB tended to go a little bit "Benny Hill" at times. And I agree. It's a small criticism, but the "haha - look! it's a pun about titties!" aspect takes away from the world class genius humour at times.@@darthbuzz1

@@garethm3242 Benny Hill Show was pretty outrageous for its time as well. Many people considered it a fairly low form of humour and he had a pretty divided fan base about it. I think Ronnie Barker tried to include the Benny Hill type fans, as they were in competition being active TV shows at the same time and all fighting for ratings. Monty Python had its moments, but I was never really taken with them. Each to their own, I guess. I have no criticism of them, they just weren't my style. Benny Hill was funny to a point and just got dull as the show wore on with some good moments, but the Two Ronnies and Morecambe and Wise I found were generally more amusing and talented in general.

Four Candles was written by Gerald Wiley, who provided many sketches privately for Two Ronnies. Wiley was, in fact, Ronnie Barker (the large male shopper). Barker was a genius - a writer and an actor who could play comedy and serious drama equally brilliantly.

Harry Enfield came to the fore in the 1980s. The 'Blackberry' sketch updated and played homage to '4 candles'. I think it may have been on annual TV charity extravaganza 'Comic Relief'. When comedy actors break into laughter, it's also known as 'corpsing'. Peter Cook used to love making Dudley Moore corpse. I recommend Pete & Dud's art gallery sketch. That's even older!

So glad you guys are checking out some comedy. It's a huge part of English culture. Sadly both Ronnies have left us now. There was a large team of writers, including Barry Cryer, who dies earlier this year. Ronnie Barker (the annoying customer) also wrote a lot of the sketches, and fora long time he did so anonymously... Even the production team did not know he was the writer. One must see Two Ronnies sketch is mastermind. A really good example of the traits you admired in these sketches... Simple, clever and perfectly delivered.

As a Brit I love it when you get the British reverences like the Bill Hooks / Bollocks pun. British comedy in the 1960s 70s and 80s used a lot of ''double entendre'' and innuendo which is great if you are not into rude or vulgar comedy, and it was a great way that the ''mums and dads'' could laugh at edgy humour, but the kids wouldn't get it, so it's very family friendly. A great example of this is the ''Carry On'' films or Dick Emery.

The Two Ronnies were never vulgar - sometimes saucy though! The guy doing the shopping is Ronnie Barker and he was the genius who wrote the sketches - an absolute master at play-on-words! The frustrated shopkeeper, and again in the Blackberry sketch as the customer, is Ronnie Corbett. Sadly both are now deceased and the level of 'comedy' has dropped 😥. GO FOR FRIDAY! A suggestion: the world knows that the UK gave them Shakespeare, William Wordsworth and many other great writers and poets - but a popular current favourite poet is a lady (now in her 70s) called Pam Ayres. Not 'classical' but her poems are both observational and humorous which together with her distinctive rural North Berkshire accent justifies her being affectionately known as 'the people's poet'. A married lady, a good poem to react to would be "They Should Have Asked My Husband".😅 I'm certain that once you've reacted to Pam Ayres you will get lots of suggestions of her many other poems to try! Take care ladies.

Well done on getting so many of the smaller details in the 4 candles sketch, having gone over much of the difrances in UK vs US and regional diolects really does pay off, you even got the bill hooks bit and that one escapes a lot of English people as well, think you got the double entendre of dongle in the blackberry sketch as well, so well done! Seen so many American reacts to these and other British sketches where many of the funniest parts just go flying over their heads and they unfortunately missout on the fuller fun of so many sketches so it's good to see some Americans getting the deeper parts of British humor.

Four Candles has been voted the best sketch ever. If you go to buy candles in the UK and they ask how many, the answer is always 4! It was written by Ronnie Barker (the customer in this sketch) under the pseudonym Gerald Wiley, he put the scripts in and they were played and he got paid, he didn't tell the it was him for years! Ronnie Corbet was the shop keeper, Ronnie Barker passed in 2005 & Ronne Corbet in 2016 They were both national treasures. The Blackberry sketch was after Ronnie B had either retired, or it was after his death. Harry Enfield was the shop keeper, a dong is slang for a man's appendage!

Back in the day, "pumps" were like trainers - shoes you'd wear for exercise. Also, check out some other Two Ronnies sketches, Ronnie Barker (the Four Candles customer) was a master of wordplay and wrote a lot of the sketches under an assumed name. In particular have a look at the mispronounciation sketch, and the Water pub. He was also a very accomplished actor, and it's hard to believe all his roles were played by the same person. Have a look at Norman Fletcher in "Porridge" and Arkwight in "Open All Hours" as a comparison.

Pumps are plimsolls. Cheap slip-on trainers that kids wear to do PE in primary school. We used to carry them with our PE kit in a homemade drawstring pump bag. Being Britain, there are regional variations. Some called them plimsolls exclusively.

The bit just after where the Four Candles sketch ends featured a bit where they discussed the sketch ending. Ronnie Barker (the larger man) explains he wasn't happy with the obscure reference and vulgarity of the joke (billhooks are little bit like machetes, and yes it a play on bollocks). Barker rewrote the scene so that the assistant taking over is a very buxom woman who asks "What kind of knockers are you looking for?" (you get door knockers, but knockers is also a slang word for breasts).

Now I have to find a play list for you and start binging. The 2 Ronnies are a fine example of Great British humour. The Two Ronnies were from a period of British television replete with superb variety comedy. Their 'Mastermind sketch' is genius and Ronnie Barkers mangled language sketch's a tongue tying hoot. May i also recommend a comedy duo, that to my and many others were the greatest of them all. Morecambe & Wise. Just too many classic moments to mention, but two that spring to mind are the Breakfast sketch & their take on the song 'Singing in the rain'. Solid, clean variety entertainment. A Joy to watch.

Ronnie Barker plays the role of a hardware store/ shop keeper in the comedy show 'Open All Hours'. One of the best comedy shows ever made in the UK. His co star is David Jason from 'Only fools and horses' and they both have starring roles in 'Porridge'. These 3 comedy shows would be in the top 5 of every Brit's favourite comedy shows. And Harry Enfield plays the shop keeper in the blackberry sketch. He also had his own sketch show called 'Harry Enfield and Friends'. That would also be in the top 5 of most Brits' comedy list. It is a legendary sketch. Previn had no time to rehearse, given his hectic schedule, and read the script for the first time in the back of the car on the way to the studio. Eric Morecambe, who was the ultra-careful one despite his nutty stage persona, was desperately worried. Previn, though, was brilliant. His comic timing cannot be faulted, and there is a point in the sketch where Morecambe acknowledges it. Look at the renowned BBC orchestra behind them, genuinely laughing. Previn said that ever after London cabbies would shout out lines from the sketch when they recognised him in the street.

Their comedy was never vulger but just close to the edge of naughty innuendo. The occasssional reference now may not be PC but it was never meant to insult. Another great play on words is their Mastermind sketch. mastermind is a quiz which has run here for donkeys years. Contestants anser question on their own specalist subjuct then general knowledge. Some the reference wou may not get as they are very britsih but still genius. I'd recomend watching it then after followers have explained anthing you didnt get watch it again. Firstly, you are one of the few to get the "bollocks" joke at the end. Ronnie Barker (the tall one) was more of an actor and used to be one of the main writers. ronnie corbett (the short one) was the comedian. Slightly inderrated but it was often his reaction that gave the joke the punch. Barker was very good on word play. I think (but am not sure) that the blackberry sketch was part of a tribute to RB. Harry Enfield (a gifted actor/comedian) plays the RB role. Sadly both RB and RC have both passed on.

Well done on getting the last pun of the first sketch. A Billhook by the way was an old agricultural implement, it was basically a large knife shaped a bit like an inverted letter J, the sharp edge being on the inside of the J, commonly used for hedge laying, a process of trimming the field boundary hedges by partially cutting the larger stems and folding them over, so that the hedge would grow intertwined with the adjacent hedge plant.

Ronnie Barker (the big guy) and Ronnie Corbett. They first got together during a late night satirical show called "The Frost Report" with David Frost The first sketch they did on the programme was with John Cleese. Ronnie Barker submitted sketches under pseudonyms (including "Gerald Wiley") to avoid pre-judgments of his writing talent. Ronnie Barker was a wordsmith. Their TV show went on from April 1971 till December 1987. Later on they came back to do some "best of" shows. Both, but especially Ronnie Barker were national institutions. Barker retired in 1987 but returned to do occasional performances. He died in 2005. He is also famous for some o0f his TV shows like Porridge and Open All Hours. Ronnie Corbett died in 2016. RIP two great British Comics.
