Since then, any sexuality from him is clearly just straight bro stuff, but that never seems to get talked about in reference to those six months to a year where Tyler was the darling of lgbtqa+ dreams and/or critics who desperately wanted him to be officially announcing his closet exit.. Idk, I don’t really care what he is/who he fucks, but it’s just fu€king weird to me all that happened, and it’s been moved on from like it was nothing. Idk what the reference is about, but some of their music has that hypnotic, entrancing effect, so maybe they were just referencing another artist who does that with their instrumentals to pull you deeper into the story (lyrically and musically)??? And/or maybe it sounds like something Slint have done? Idk, that’s just pure speculation on my part. With this album Tyler has accomplished one of the greatest three album runs of all time. Not only did he put out three amazing albums, but they were all very different from each other, while also being focused and reflective of his mental state and life experiences. He didn't just put out 3 great albums, but creatively expressed himself in a way that was experimental and unique while still being genuine and not feeling like he was pushing boundaries just to push them. Tyler was able to genuinely express himself while expanding the boundaries of hiphop and making BANGERS!

I really think the technical issues kept Anthony from seeing Wilshire for what it really was: the key to understanding the rest of the album. IMO it re-contextualizes the braggadocio and jet setting to be less about Tyler showing off and more about Tyler recovering his self-worth after being rejected. Shit, he even brings along a dedicated hypeman. It's pure escapism.

I felt the same way about the content but at the end of the day, this is music The fact that the mix is almost unbearable for the entire 8+ minute runtime cant be overlooked just for the content it holds I agree that it is the centerpiece to understanding the album as a whole, but that doesnt mean the song didnt need to be crafted well If it was refined better it would have been a lot better That being said I dont think it would have been a high point of the project It was necessary to understanding the concept but it would have been a lot more interesting if it was consolidated and a condensed a little better

1. Why did he pronounce Wil-SHIRE like that? It's Wilshire Blvd... the street he drove down while he was taking the heartbreak in he speaks of on the track. 2. Wilshire IS THE HEART OF THE ALBUM. This heartbreak is the emotional backbone of the whole story -- he drops more context and pieces of the story throughout the album all culminating into wilshire. He did the whole song in like two takes on a shitty reference mic. It's supposed to sound gritty - its like raw sadness. DAMN TONY.
@txrracxtta

Bro you are getting way too offended over a song that just sounds badly mixed lmfao, that's not called "intentionally gritty", that's called "Tyler literally admitted that the song sounds kind of fucked because he did it in 2 takes on a handheld mic and says it could have been done better". Yeah, it's the heart of the album, and it's pretty well written, but at 8 minutes, with a flawed beat that LOOPS including the flaws, it's pretty damn hard for some people to listen to or care about unless they're heavily invested in the album or Tyler himself. So I’m in no way an expert on Tyler’s music. Been listening to him on and off for years, but idk. This album is special. Like really. And I think your review was great and agree with a lot of it, but my main disagreement I have with how you viewed it is I think the woman that he refers to is the main subject of the whole work. His vanity and description of his life and success is just the backdrop. It’s used to highlight how crazy it is that even though he still has everything, he still wants her more than anything, the one thing he can’t have. It’s sad, but also happy, he’s moving on and reflecting about her, but focusing on his accomplishments and happiness and fame while still having her in the back of his mind and on the surface. I think his relationship to her ties the whole album together. I don’t know honestly how it stacks up to his other works. Don’t know if I can really compare them, but I have this album on constant repeat. 10/10 hands down

I think fantano didn’t appreciate it in the context of the album but as a stand alone song which you can’t do. I hate how quickly Fantano dismisses Wilshire. It’s one of his best songs he’s ever done. 8 minutes or straight raps about a very complex and intimate moment. I felt like I was there and experienced it all with the way he wrote it. It’s an achievement for Tyler. I listed on my AT studio headphones and the mix didn’t bother me one bit. It’s a little funky but keeps it from getting too monotonous. Certain double track words pop in the left channel and keep you engaged to the words. The separation of audio stops you from just losing his voice as background audio in this 8 minute song. I think it’s much much better than he’s giving credit for. I was floored when I heard this. This, literally this! His critique of Wilshire rubbed me the wrong way, commenting that it could’ve used some transitions to better move the lyrics or pace along the track. However, I’d argue that Tyler has very clearly shown his ability to develop a music motif and transition throughout the album almost seamlessly at times, I’m willing to bet that Tyler’s choice of instrumental was intentional. Wilshire was very obviously a direct attempt at strictly being a story telling song.

Fantano called this a "vanity album" and I suppose it is at some points, but I honestly feel Fantano missed one of Tyler's big points of "I have all these amazing things, yet I don't have the one girl I love." Tyler ending up the loser of a love triangle (yet again) counter acts all his bragging earlier on in the record and really ties up the album thematically. Sure money and fame is nice, but it's not enought to make up for a lack of love. I just think Fantano's lack of interest in Wilshire was what kept him from giving the album a 9, which is how I'd have ranked it were I the bald one in front of a camera

Exactly, there's no reason to underestimate how conceptual Tyler is at this point in his career. This album may not have a clear narrative but there is an overall progression and message. The whole song Sweet/I Thought You Wanted to Dance is a love two part ballad which changes at the end when he reveals he was just being led on. As well as all the references to the one missing thing in his life (the girl) littered throughout the album. It's more than just braggadocio rap.

To be honest my favorite parts were when he talked about that stuff instead of his double r's and McLarens. But we got so little of it it just seemed misplaced... like there were two distinct ideas going on at the same time in the album. Tyler jet setting and going off and him dealing with the aftermath of his love triangle relationship. Personally I wanted more like wasyaname but the other stuff is cool too.

I find the braggadocios element to the album to be a part of Tyler’s growth. He’s showing us how he now deals with emotional turmoil is a healthier (maybe not the healthiest) way. Where in Flower Boy he complained about having all these things but still being bored but here he is using these things to help him “seize the day” and live in the moment. He is happy. He is enjoying his fruits and making the most out of life in spite of this love connection gone wrong. Tyler is telling how he has grown as a person. He’s telling us he’s good. He equipped to deal with whatever comes his way. It’s a great story and it’s good to know he has matured enough to take life’s curve balls head on. It definitely adds to the album.

Wilshire was beautiful. Can’t say why but it resonated with me so strongly from the first time I heard it. I love the candidness of it and it feels so deeply personal and real. I also think it brings the whole album together with this idea of Tyler having so much success yet not getting the thing he wants most.

When this album dropped at midnight me, my brother and 2 friends listened to it and one of them kept whining about how it wasn’t as good as Igor while the rest of us were just trying to enjoy it, I was pretty hooked on both the production and samples, 2 things that've consistently kept me invested in hip-hop, but overall I’d have to go in deeper to truly give a more well put together opinion on it

Wilshire is the centerpiece of the whole album. Every song points back to it. There's nothing wrong with the mix, and I'd even say the fact that the mix is different aligns with the idea behind the song: "I have all this, but I want you more". The rest of the record is well-put-together, showy, and emotionally shallow, and this song is different because it reflects how much of a mess Tyler felt like after the entanglement, and we get to see him in such greater depth. Wilshire is the reason this album was made. The rest just goes to further prove his point

its an effortlessly well-crafted, tastefully disconnected dream of an album. i can picture tyler answer the question "if you could do whatever you wanted with an album, what would you do?" and he just starts listing off all kinds of stuff. and then makes it happen, good and bad, high points and low.

I can't listen to it without feeling the urge to skip. You can't make such a long song with imperfect mixing and the same instrumentals the entire time. It reminds me of "Sing About Me, I'm Dying Of Thirst" in that it's a story over a beat but the difference is that WILSHIRE is uncomfortable to listen to on accident, because of mixing and boring background music. I'm listening to it right now on my headphones and can't help but be annoyed The rest of the album is fire though

On my first listen of the album Willshire also stuck out as easily the worst track and I didn’t even notice the mixing, the song lacks any chord progression despite its lengthy run time and Tyler generically feeds us a narrative that he could’ve done throughout the album in a much more creative way or even the way he did with SWEET/I THOUGHT YOU WANTED TO DANCE where the guest appearances and multiple beat switch ups allows the song to flow nicely

It's interesting your main complaint with the record was Tyler's vanity but your least favorite track ended up being Wilshire, considering what a contrast it is to the flexing he does on the rest of the album. He talks about all the money he has and all the things he can buy with it, but then this track is the opposite, it's about something he wanted more than anything else but couldn't have. It doesn't have a happy ending, he's basically just like "it was a shit situation, I fucked up" It's very raw and human and by putting it near the end of the record it changes the context of the rest of the album by showing how all of those material things he indulges in are just temporary joys, and that he'll always eventually get bored and be looking on to the next thing. Hence the theme of traveling throughout; he's never satisfied with where he's at. Of course a good share of it is about him being able to sit back and appreciate where he is and what he's accomplished, but he also seems to be saying that he only feels so good about the present because he has so much new stuff on the horizon to look forward to. The flexing is just a way to measure his insatiable appetite for life
