They actually cast Melissa McBride as Carol because of her part in The Mist. Before this, she was actually a casting director who only appeared in small roles here and there. But because of her performance in this, they thought she'd be perfect for Carol specifically because of the Sofia storyline.

@XSpiegel it's less about Jane and more about Lincoln. There's something about Lincoln's eyes, he looks dangerous but also detached. Like he's broken and can't feel emotion anymore, which works for the character because Rick is constantly battling giving into his worst intentions. With Jane, I can see all of his emotions on his face. He's not really a subtle actor so big performances, like in The Mist, work for him.

Fun fact: In Stephen Kings IT, Pennywise came from another dimension called the Macroverse, thousands of years ago. The creatures in the Mist also came from another dimension after the government opened a portal during the Arrowhead project. There’s a very good chance that that dimension was the Macroverse considering the fact that most, if not all, of Stephen Kings books are connected. That would mean these monsters and IT are from the same place. Very interesting.

Yeh, thought I read somewhere that it's connected to world of "The Dark Tower" too. I saw this for the first time at work, years back when I worked over nights. I actually stood up and said out loud "SHUT THE F*CK UP", when that tank came rolling out of the mist, old sad ass song blaring back on that we'd been hearing. That man will never be right, he's gone, bro. If the eldritch terrors he witnessed didn't crack him up already, then the knowledge of killing his son and fellow survivors just minutes away from rescue, will surely have him in a padded cell the rest of his days. Another thing I find interesting about this movie when I zoom my perspective out to a macro level is, you know how in super hero shows like Spiderman there are many situations where they accidentally open portals to other dimensions, even the movie Pacific Rim, and although things look bleak sometimes we usually see things from the perspective of the powerful hero of the movie. However the Mist, this movie shows you how normal people would experience the result of a portal opening up and allowing entities from it's dimension to invade us and we have nobody here with super powers.

The easter egg of the dark tower at the beginning is so fun to fans As you see, The Dark Tower is the physical represention of Gan, who is basically God in King's universe, and it's on charge of maintaining the equilibrium of all the worlds and universes Out of the limits of the Tower there's the Todash Darkness, where the chaos reigns, and a lot of demonic beings live. The main villain of the saga, the Crimson King, tries to destroy the beams of the tower to destroy all universes, causing a lot of these portals full of monsters to open in the normal world. Pennywise from It also comes from the Todash, The Outsider from The Outsider, Tak from Desperation, as well as a lot of King villains like Barrow from Salem's Lot.

I. love.. this ending... and I'll explain why. 1)the original books ending: leave 'em guessing, just a remark that there are 4 bullets the audience contemplates the awful repercussions; it's good narratively. the cult didn't know, the protagonists don't know; and you don't know either 2) you could have the tanks pull up right as they run out of gas after the "4 bullets" conversation; end it on a hopeful note, okay our protagonists chose wisely- never give up. It's a 'feels good man' the level-headed prevail type of story. not a rememberable story narratively, but it's a good lesson 3) you could have a creature from the Mist eat him afterwords: have an experience of real stunning apathetic dread of that feeling beyond hopelessness- respectable ending, that's a strong narrative and a bold thing to have for an audience 'no lesson- life happens then you die kid' But This to have this horrifying remarkable lesson that hopelessness can be wrong; and that this in itself could be worse that hopelessness can have absolute cost in the face of hope unseen. this ending is just so much more powerful than the first 2 combined it leaves you contemplative like ending 1 it stands to toe to toe lesson with 2 and it utterly OVERWHELMS 3 in efficacy. this ending was literally stunning the 1st time I saw it, just awe-inspiring dread, elevates this story to a masterwork of horror. I am 100% in agreement with Stephen King this ending trumps all the others, this was the STRONGEST ending to the story possible and i respect the shit out of those that wrote this.

Stephen King's ending just has them driving into the mist. King said he hated the movie ending, cos he wish he'd written it :)

Idc what anybody says you’re not waiting to be eaten alive when you have a gun sitting next to you. The ending was the most rational and logical thing to do. There has been no sign of help for days and your car died in the middle of a the mist you have no clue how far the mist has gotten and you’re hearing creatures outside. You’re not waiting. Trust me

The Dark Tower reference right at the top is one of my favorite in any Stephen King movie. Especially if you know the story of the Dark Tower, you know exactly why what's happening in this movie is happening. They opened a hole into the Todash darkness and that's where the monsters pour out from.

You need to watch this movie back to back with “Maximum Overdrive,” which works as an emotional pallet cleanser after “The Mist” and enables you to end things on a light note while sticking with the Stephen King theme.

When the movie was at cinemas as premiere movie and no one know the ending people left the auditorium completely silent. Most of them was broken for many next hours or days.

One thing I love about this movie is how incongruous the creatures are with respect to each other. They don't feel like some kind of ecosystem, they feel like they're from an entirely irrational place. Some kind of unnatural place that doesn't heed the laws of nature.

This is my favorite horror movie. The ending is so insane, and I just always enjoyed the classic B movie vibe. By the way, Frank Darabont also released a black and white version, which I think also fits the vibe pretty well. That's worth a watch if anyone can find it imo.

"...from the Dark Tower, right?" This is certainly the _only_ reaction that caught that. 👏 One of the other posters is Hitchcock's The Birds...which King's short story The Mist is a "remake" of.

whats interesting is that the movie is based on the book and the ending to the book there's at least hope. while still not a happy ending, the book finishes with them all inside an abandoned apartment trying to fall asleep scared as they hear all the creatures outside. at least then you could only imagine if they do or don't survive and this movie ending surprised the original author, and actually liked this ending better

This was not Kings ending in the book. Frank Darabont was the screenwriter and he changed the ending to this. Also he developed and executive produced The Walking Dead that is why you recognized some cast members from this movie were also in the walking dead. Do some research!

Few things about the story/movie: - Carmody was right. Everything she said was true. "We want the boy!" They kill the boy, the mist clears. She was the villain, sure, but she was also 100 percent accurate with everything she said. - The army was driving the same direction the protagonists were. This means they already came from the Supermarket and most likely everyone within was rescued. - The movie was originally supposed to be in black and white. This would make the CGI less punishing and obvious.

You guys should watch The Mist Tv series. That would be fun, its only one season so it would go by pretty quick. Also this ending destroyed me as a kid, trauma. Also the line "Are you being Willfully Dense?" Has been a part of my normal speech since I was a kid.

You can basically take your gun anywhere except government facilities. Even if a private business has a "no guns" sign, you won't be arrested for taking one in - you may get trespassed and banned from the store, but it isn't against the law.
