Serving two life sentences consecutively either means, or used to mean, that as soon as the convict is eligible for parole for the first sentence, the second sentence starts, and it will be another seven years or so until the convict is actually eligible for parole.

And then the line is immediately undermined by showing us that his hope was fulfilled. It was a lot more powerful in the book when you didn’t know for sure. It ended with the HOPE of a happy ending.

I think the reason they finally granted him his parole the third time was because the first two times they thought his speech sounded rehearsed or memorized. it was probably what they heard from every prisoner who was up for parole- "Yes, I'm a changed man. I've learned my lesson. I'm no longer a threat to society". But the last time, he sounded sincere, like he was really taking responsibility for his actions, especially when he said "I'd like to have a talk with that young man and tell him how things are". They knew he wasn't just saying what he thought they wanted him to say so he could get out. He was speaking from his heart.

In the parole office at the end, red told them he regretted every day and wanted to talk sense into that kid who was gone, but the only one left was this old man. That’s what convinced that. The murderer was gone.

I'm the Stephen King book, "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption," the character Red (Redding) is Irish. When director, Frank Darabont cast Morgan Freeman, they used the quote as an inside joke because of the casting change. Readers of the book immediately understood the meaning of the quote when they watched this scene in the film.

It's also a more basic surface joke to those unfamiliar with the short story. "Maybe it's because I'm Irish" - the joke being that red hair is an Irish trait, so works as a joke as he's clearly unlikely to have Irish heritage.

Sears and Roebuck was a chain of huge department stores originally started as a mail order catalog in 1892 that would basically sell anything and everything. And that white stuff was de-lousing powder. I think Red got paroled because he finally told the parole board what he really thought, instead of what he thought the parole board wanted to hear.

How do you say this but omit the most obvious fact, which is that Sears and Roebuck is simply the old name for Sears, which is still around and that they probably know. As recently as the 90s when they were kids, Sears had huge stores everywhere.

@@everyonelovesmajima Yeah but @WarKrieg 11's comment is still valid. The reactors said they were born in 1992. Even though the Sears company had been in decline for awhile, the big wave of store closings didn't start until the 2010s (bankruptcy was in 2018). Also, Sears TV commercials were all over the place through the reactors' childhood and teen years. I guess maybe it's a "Mandela Effect" thing that a lot of people think Sears shrunk up and went away earlier than it truly did.

The $10 for the hammer in 1947 is about $140 today. The $35,000 inheritance in 1949 is about $450,000 today. The $370,000 in 1966 is about $3.5 million today. Sears & Roebuck was a catalog department store. They sold almost anything. Like Amazon without the internet.

Shawshank is a top tier movie. Often times people who commit these terrible crimes aren't the same people when they get out. Some people don't learn but once you've been in so long, the person getting out isn't even the same person who went in. How much have you changed in 20+ years.

One of the points of the story I think is that people in prison are still people. They're not animals. They're being punished for their crimes by being there. Thinking the things they are going through somehow count less because they committed a crime is wild. Stephen King is a great storyteller. Good reaction.

I was a Correctional Officer for 7 years. I was also a field trainer. This was the very first thing I told every new officer. We're here to keep everyone safe, not punish them. They're already being punished.

the additional life sentences do have a purpose. It extends the period of time they gotta serve before they are eligible for first parole hearing. If 1 life sentence requires 20 years served before parole, 2 life sentences means he has to wait 40 years for his first hearing. They rarely give out more than 2 because they will be so old it wont matter.

Some corrections and clarifications: A life sentence is 25 years. And they give life sentences either consecutive or concurrent. And they are given per count of murder. So 2 murders could give 2 life sentences that serve at the same time(concurrent) meaning only 25 years is required before parole or back to back(consecutive) meaning 50 years to serve. And they give multiple sentences to "hedge their bets", if you beat a conviction on one count, you still have to serve life on the other. So your last sentence is completely false.

It ran the same year as Pulp Fiction and Forest Gump. Gump got the Oscar. In fact, I believe Shawshank didn't even perform well in theaters, some attribute it to the movie title but had a big resurgence in rentals and tv.

Shawshank came out during a very heavy period of "tough on crime" in the states. Criminals weren't intended to be seen as people, just violent criminals that needed to be locked away. The masses had no desire to feel sympathetic towards criminals, so they stayed away

I was convicted for growing Marijuana in the Orange Hills in California in1988. I was sentenced to 16 months in prison, first offense. I found jail to be much worse than prison, but my experiences are with a one yard, non-violent offenders. In jail, they haven't classified anyone yet, so you could be next to an accused murderer or other violent type.

I LOVE this movie and saw it BOTH TIMES you posted it! 1994 was a GREAT YEAR in films with Shawshank, Pulp Fiction, The Client AND Forrest Gump. All some of my favorites. I was born in 77 so the 90's was my most impressionable movie years.

The reason Andy got two life sentences, is because they were treated as separate murders. It's also a way to guarantee that Andy stays in jail, in the event that he is later found innocent of one of the murders. Such as, if they later found out that Andy was innocent of shooting his wife, because it was determined that her lover was the one who shot her, and that Andy shot her lover for killing his wife. Andy would then have to still serve a life sentence for her lover's murder.

Not exactly. A "life sentence" is a minimum of 25 years. After that, a convict is eligible for parole. So two life sentences means a minimum of 50 years.

This is a short story by Steven King. In the book it explains that in the box at the rock wall, is where Andy hid the driver license and SS card for Randle Steven's. He created the fake person before he went to jail. He knew he'd need it when he got out.

I hear you, but I think you have the wrong preception of old cinema. The quality of storytelling is just superior. You really need to watch Casablanca, Breakfast at Tiffany's, To Kill a Mockingbird, Chinatown, etc. They will change your perspective. The 1970s and 1990s might be the two best decades for film, but the 40s-60s has some bangers. There's not a film in the last decade that holds a candle to any of these.

You guys called it. The story was about Red's redemption and Andy was his agent of hope. Make certain you watch "The Green Mile" (1999). It's considered the "sister movie" to Shawshank. Same Director & Screenwriter (Frank Darabont). Same source author (Stephen King). There are more masterpieces & genre changers from the past that can be listed. Here is a short list that should also be watched. "!2 angry men" (1957), "Casablanca" (1942), The Matrix (1999), Fight Club (1999), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), King Kong (1933), The Wizard of Oz (1939), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), The Princess Bride (1987), Terminator 1 & 2, Alien & Aliens, The Godfather 1 & 2, The Departed .....

They give people multiple life sentences to ensure they stay in prison even if they would normally get out for parole or if one of the convictions is over turned. For instance if they found out later that Andy only killed his wife and the other guy died some other way. If they lump all the crimes into one sentence then if any part is disproved later he would be let out.

Great reaction like always, this is a masterpiece of cinema, A masterclass in pretty much every category. An incredible script, wonderful direction, gorgeous score and phenomenal performances by Freeman and Robbins. Some fun-facts about this movie, Stephen King sold the rights for $1,000. The baseball throwing scene took 9 hours The scene where Andy and Red are standing and talking outside whilst Red is throwing a baseball back and forth took a staggering nine hours to film. Morgan Freeman threw the ball endlessly the whole time. The following day, when he arrived at work, his arm was in a sling. Clint Eastwood and Harrison Ford were considered for Red, and Brad Pitt audition for the role of Tommy but he pulled out of the role because of another movie, later Brad Pitr said he regretted that decision. Red’s mugshot is Morgan Freeman’s son , When you see Morgan Freeman’s papers at one of his parole hearings, there are mugshots of a younger Red attached. These are actually photos of Alfonso Freeman - Morgan’s son. He also had a small part in the movie. He was one of the inmates shouting ‘Fresh fish!’ Stephen King’s novella was titled, ‘Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption.’ This was shortened for the film because they didn’t want people to think it was a biopic about Rita Hayworth. This was proven to be true when several actresses applied for the ‘lead role of Rita Hayworth’. Keep up the amazing work.

6:17 Sears and Roebuck, which later became Sears, the once ubiquitous national giant department store chain found at every mall, and now defunct, started as a mail order catalog where you could buy just about anything: clothes, cookware, hardware, machine guns, and even complete kits to build houses. And these fresh convicts largely aren’t supposed to be in their 40s. Times was hard back then, people usually looked older than their actual age. They started smoking cigarettes when they were 10, they usually didn’t have adequate nutrition, if you grew up poor you often had to work laborious jobs outside or in a coal mine shortly after you could walk, and sunscreen really wasn’t a thing. You could have been 20 and looked 45 to a person of today.

The scene where the guy slipped money in an envelope in with the pie, was the guy begging the warden to not take the job for the Highway bc he needed it to keep his businesses going. The warden was putting people outta business bc the labor cost was next to nothing, so the guy bribed him not to take the job

there are many theories why red got parole at the end. i like the idea that he got it because he said he didn't care about it, basically admitting that he deserved to be in prison, which can be taken as proof of genuine remorse.

The movie was filmed at the (closed) Ohio Reformatory in Mansfield which is open to tours highlighting the locations used, and it is even said to be haunted. The tree and rock wall is not far from where I live. Several years ago a storm took out the tree, but it is neat to have a connection to one of the better movies of our time. “The Green Mile” is now a must watch for you two!!!

This prison is 45 minutes away from where I live. It's Mansfield penitentiary, in Mansfield Ohio. They give tours and everything. It's also rumored to be haunted. They sell tickets for sleep overs around Halloween.

The movie never explains what Red and Brooks did to land them in prison, but they definitely deserved it: Red is in for a triple homicide: Red planned to murder his wife for the insurance money, so he cut her brakes but that day his wife picked up their neighbor and their neighbor's child to go to the store together, and so all three died in the car crash. Brooks was in prison for a double homicide: he had a losing poker streak, and in a rage he murdered his wife and his own child in cold blood. So while they may have changed in prison, they definitely were not good people before hand.

The reason for the life sentences that way is that if he dies and is revived or was sentenced to death and he was executed but some how survived the execution he could then argue that he technically fulfilled his sentences and try to get released. For example if he was sentenced to serve both life sentences at the same time he died and was revived or he was thought to be dead and wasn’t a doctor mistakenly declared him dead and he awakened he could probably go back to court and argue that he was officially declared dead and has fulfilled his sentences. This is an unlikely situation but in order to avoid such a case the judges will order the sentences to be served back to back.

This movie is filmed at the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio. I got to take a private tour of the prison, a family friend was one of the people working on renovating it at the time, and got us a cool tour on the weekend once. Really cool to see everything from the movie. Seeing the cell blocks and the wardens office was cool af. And the tunnel through the wall is just a PVC pipe thats 6ft long. Lil Wayne also recorded his Go DJ music video there, and parts of Air Force One are filmed there too. They have ghost tours/haunts and in the summer they have a Tattoo and Metal Festival on the front lawn called Inkarceration Fest. Highly worth the visit if you're ever in that area.

The Sears and roebuck stores had a magazine that you could order anything from. Even a House. They would deliver it and you would build it 😅. When I was a child alot of people used the pages for toilet paper. Back when we had out houses.

4:15 it's more about punishing the crime that the criminal committed than it is giving "extra" punishment. Each crime gets you a separate sentence that matches each crime.

Glad you guys watch that movie, it's not just a classic but one of the best movies in history. It doesn't matter, or shouldn't matter, if a movie is from the 80s, 90s or 2000s, if it's a great movie is all it matters and there are some great movies from the 90s n 2000s, probably a lot of great ones even older but not too familiar with those myself. If you are given time for each charge, the Judge can have you serve them back-to-back or concurrent. 10 for each can be served as 10 years (concurrent) or you serve 10 then the second 10 for 20 years (back-to-back).

While working at our State prison, we had an inmate with 330 years. It was set up that way so that if he appeals any of his charges... he still would be fewer get out.

You can’t judge movies because it’s old. It’s a Wonderful Life came out in 1946 and still transcend to this day. I doubt any movies made today will be have that kind of an impact 80 years from now.

Great story. The scenes with Brooks are truly tough. When this movie came out, it wasn't a big hit: weird title, people who knew it was a Stephen King story thought it was gonna be a horror film, and people who didn't know heard it was about felons in a prison and were like, why would I want to watch something grim like that?? 🙂 The eventual word of mouth about how amazing it was saved it.

I'm not a lawyer, but there are some legal quirks as to why some states do concurrent vs. back to back sentencing. Parole for the individual crimes factors in, and in some places a "life sentence" is really like 25 years. Nowadays they will usually give "life without parole" (LWOP) unless the death penalty is on the table. For very heinous crimes sometimes you see judges stack either multiple life sentences back to back, or they give a number of years for each of several crimes. You see it a lot with mass murderers and serial killers. Terry Nichols (OK City bomber) got 161 life sentences. Gary Ridgeway has 49 life sentences plus an additional 480 years. I believe a lot of times people like that will get life sentences for the murders, then terms of years for various related crimes, like if they raped a victim first.
