Bittersweet fact: Sir Ian Holm developed Parkinson’s disease and it got quite nasty. He stopped acting altogether, but Peter Jackson and crew were hoping to have him reprise his role as Bilbo, and he agreed as a favor to Peter, and I like to think he did it for the fans too. He couldn’t fly to New Zealand, so they set up a private studio in London with a small crew and all the time in the world. There, he gave his final performance (I believe this is his last acting job), and one that I think should and can and be appreciated by all. I think he was flawless. RIP Sir Ian Holm.

Balin, the white bearded dwarf, is the one shown in Moria, in Lord of the Rings. He's in the light beamed tomb that Gimli finds, and who Gimli kept talking about when the Fellowship was going to Moria.

Every reactor I've seen reacting to The Hobbit has asked "Why in the world do dragons want gold?", and I'm like, "You didn't know that? Yeah, dragons covered gold." Then I realized... my mom read The Hobbit to me when I was a little girl, so I've always just taken it as a given. 🙂

I nice little thing: in LOTR Bilbo offers Gandalf wine, but he just asks for tea instead. In The Hobbit, Gandalf is offered tea, but asks for wine instead. Happens in both the movies and the books.

Fun Fact: per canon, Bilbo is 50 YEARS OLD when he went off with the Dwarves in this movie, which means that since he was celebrating his 111th birthday in The Lord of the Rings, a full 60 YEARS passed between movies!

Please keep in mind that the tone of the Hobbit films is different than TLOTR, and it’s meant to be. The Hobbit book was written with younger kids in mind. That’s why some of the dialogue is sillier, some of the scenes have less blood and less mortal danger, etc, compared to LOTR because the films mirror the tone of the books.

In the first 40secs you said something that illustrates perfectly the biggest issue with this trilogy. You said this film was a "prequel" and while I concede that this is a prequel to the LOTR movies, The Hobbit was not written as a prequel to the LOTR books. Lord of the Rings is a sequel to The Hobbit. It matters that The Hobbit was written first. This film's desperation to associate itself with the original trilogy is it's biggest downfall. With that said, I still had plenty of fun watching it

Just an opinion on this one about why Hobbits don't wear shoes. Firstly, their feet are very tough and resilient, so no need. Secondly, Hobbits are tied to the earth and growing things. Going without shoes keeps them in touch with the earth. A fun bit, Radagast the Brown is played by Sylvester McCoy, who played the 7th Doctor in Dr. Who. Seems fitting that a wizard should be played by the Doctor.

"In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit" and so forth is the beginning of the book, which JRR Tolkien wrote on a paper he was grading at the time.

"I'm gonna cry for some reason. Are you supposed to cry?" <3 Ms October <3 When the soundtrack for The Shire plays it ALWAYS makes me cry, and I've had this exact reaction of questioning why. I think it conjures up an emotional mix of feelings; memories of home, nostalgia, innocence, family and friendship. LOVED this, as always. A nice fun break from the bleakness of Game Of Thrones. LUL

"We could make for the Hidden Valley" (Mrs. October) "He's not a ranch fan." I almost coughed up a lung. Thank you guys so much for doing this.

Barely a few minutes into the reaction, but the tears at the beginning of the movie gave me goosebumps. Just goes to show the nostalgia and amazement the lord of the rings leaves and it really builds this movie up from the start.

Bilbo did give Frodo his sword, Sting. It glows when orcs are around.

Bilbo gave Frodo "Sting" his magic elvish sword at Rivendell when they reunited for the meeting of the fellowship. 😅

In the extended version theres a scene at the beginning where Gandalf meets Bilbo when Bilbo is an adventurous child. Thats why Gandalf says ‘youve changed’.

You know where second breakfast comes from? In the book, Bilbo departs home a bit differently. He doesn’t grab the contract and run off. He sleeps late, thinks he’s off the hook, and is enjoying his “second breakfast” when Gandalf returns to round him up. The movie’s a bit more dramatic. But “second breakfast” is never actually used in the LOTR books, it was one of those things the filmmakers took from The Hobbit in making the LOTR movies - there are a few callbacks like that.

Between the two trilogies, "Hobbiton" itself was built (and remains as a tourist destination) in complete, instead of just a simple set front. Several "Hobbit holes" were built and the whole village is there now. The first trilogy, LOTR, there was just some simple fronts set up and a "bagend" hut for filming. New Zealand has become the hobbit destination on the planet.
