I still don't know what any of that means.
From Season 8 Episode 5: Spooked - Erin (Ellie Kemper) struggles to make the Halloween party at the office exactly how Andy (Ed Helms) and Robert California (James Spader) want it. Meanwhile, Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam (Jenna Fischer) argue about whether ghosts are real, and Dwight (Rainn Wilson) bonds with Robert’s 11-year-old son, Bert.

Context: This whole episode Robert mingled around with each member of the office, innocently asking them what are things they are afraid of and meticulously predicting things they might be worried about. Creed said he was afraid of snakes, Kevin afraid of mummies, Kelly afraid of dying alone... Robert also picked up on small things like Dwight spending a lot of time in the metaverse. Using this info, Robert created this story that would appeal to every single member of such a diverse audience. Spectacular.

A lot of people didn't like Robert California but I thought he was an amazing character and a great addition to the cast. From how the shows' writers tends to stick to it's tropes. Michael would either be fairly impressed with Robert and try to emulate him to the point of being unconsciously attracted to him Or the writers would use this opportunity to hit home the fact that despite Michael's many faults, when compared to anyone else, Michael has always been the office's best boss, and has always had their best interests at heart. There's always this weird event horizon of Michael's weirdness and ineptitude where it loops back around and he's actually cool, or inspiring.

I'm always amazed by James Spader. The way he composes his speech, the lengths and locations of the pauses in said speech, his ability to tell a story and make you feel like you're an integral part to it is just unmatched by any actor I can think of. He truly is one of the greatest storytellers of our time, and I say this being well aware of how much of an important role storytelling has in our daily lives, wether we are listening to a politician, a friend, a family member, a teacher, or a salesman. Storytelling is, in my humble opinion, the most underrated form of art there is.

I enjoyed that scene. This very moment actually serves as an insightful commentary on human psychology and fear. Robert uses the example of mummies to highlight how fears can be irrational or disconnected from actual threats. It echoes psychological theories like the "fight or flight" response, which dates back to our ancestors but isn't always applicable in modern life (see the work of Walter Cannon, who coined the term). Robert's story ties into the bigger theme of the episode, which is about managing fear and motivations within the workplace. It resonates well with what management theorists like Douglas McGregor have talked about, specifically Theory X and Theory Y, which are two contrasting sets of assumptions about workforce motivation. So in essence, Robert's mummy story is more than just a quirky anecdote; it's a lens through which to examine human behavior and managerial tactics.

I feel like the creators of The Blacklist saw this monologue from James Spader and decided when he got the role of Reddington they’ll have him do these engagingly surreal monologues almost every episode.

This was so well done. Figuring out what everyone's fears around the office were and then putting them into a story.👏

Played on every person's worst fear like a master. Was such an awesome scene! He is right too fear can be a useful tool and a powerful ally especially on your enemies.

Robert California is such an underrated character and same with this scene, every long ramble he has is so hypnotic and it catches every sense for God knows what reason

This is so perfectly written, the way it addresses each characters flaws and how James Spader delivered it. I understand it was different from what early office fans liked about it later on but in many ways, the development was much needed. Season 8 is actually one of my favourite seasons
