I’m 62 years old, and I have to say, everybody and everything taught us back then , your parents, grandparents , aunts and uncles, older cousins , neighbors, teachers , preachers, books, magazines, tv shows, movies , and music , even comics in the newspaper taught us how to treat people, right from wrong, how to talk to people , how to respect people, and the right way to correct people when they are wrong or treat you wrong. That’s what my mother was all about , she always said “ it’s a way to do things “ . Some people were not raised right back then, but more people are not raised right nowadays. Too many young people would rather walk away than to sit down and have discussion and learn , or be quick to get mad and not take constructive criticism to the point where they want to pick up a gun in retaliation. In a lot of ways we could listen to songs like this to learn the ways of love and relationships, that was the beauty of songs from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.

Her stanky face cracks me up. I fit your description too and I was (and still am) mesmerized by the O'Jays and ALL this great music that came out starting with the 60s, the O'Jays being one of my favorites. I love me some Eddie Levert!!!! This stuff is the songbook of my life....still cuz here I am on 3/24/24.

Ms. Ashley the gentleman doing the story telling is Mr. Eddie Levert, the father of the late Gerald and Sean Levert. The other gentleman is Mr. Walter Williams and this song was done in 1978. These legendary brothers mastered the art of performing because they believed in giving the people what they wanted. O'jays for life.

The O'Jays are an American R&B group formed in 1958. They had a lot of great songs such as "Love Train", "Back Stabbers", "Give The People What They Want", "Put Your Hands Together", "For The Love Of Money", "Let Me Make Love To You", "I Love Music", "Livin' For The Weekend", "Message In Our Music", "Darlin' Darlin' Baby (Sweet Tender Love)", "Use Ta Be My Girl" etc.

One may also notice that back during “Ole School” times was when women was more respected. They made songs that cherished women. They did not make songs calling women the “B” word or the “W” word.

As someone that is of the “Freaknik” generation and ‘90s hip hop and r&b generation, I have to admit that the soul music of the the “70s and early to late ‘80s is (in my opinion) the best MUSIC. Live instruments, vocals, and lyrics that bared their souls without cursing and being disrespectful towards our women and people.

We were spoiled with great music back then. Saturday mornings started with cartoons and then American Bandstand followed by Soul Train. I used to love Saturdays! You don't know what you've got till it's gone and that's definitely the case with music from back then. All music from R & B to Rock & Roll was just so much better. I like some of the music that's out now but whenever I hear something like this from the 70's the new stuff just doesn't measure up to me.

The O'jays music is a rabbit hole way too many hits and great songs. The producers and song writers of a lot of their music was a team name Gamble and Huff. They wrote for them and Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Teddy Pendergrass, The Intruders and many more. Their music became known as the Phily Sound along with another writer producer named Thom Bell, especially his songs with Linda Creed writing the lyrics.
