@@venon4575 I never got into any of their stuff mainly from the black album on forward. I was into them deeply back in the early to Tate 80s (before they became a household name, when NOBODY knew who these guys were). There was myself and about four others in my High School that even knew who these guys were. I was an avid rare album collector back then. I spent my entire part time job earnings on getting my hands on all these rare vinyl albums such as different colored vinyl “Creeping Death” (red, blue, gold, green, picture discs, etc) and other rare bootleg concerts from back then, etc. once they became more mainstream/popular, I lost internet in them, packed away all my rare picture discs and ep’s and stored them in a back closet. Maybe one day I’ll find a collector who would pay an attractive price to add them all to their collection.

So imagine this song is the necessary ingredient in summoning forth an alien lifeform living deep in the ocean. It's name is Cthulhu and it sleeps in Its City of Ry'leh deep beneath the waves. It is both asleep and yet not asleep(or not even alive) but one day, when the stars align, it'll wake up. This event - or maybe the first glance of Cthulhu - will basically render everyone infuckingsane, but that's totally fine, because Cthulhu plans to eat us and the planet anyway. Cliff Burton, the original bassist of the band, was a fan of Lovecraft, and would read his stories aloud; Lovecraft worked mostly in short stories, so it was something to do between practing for HOURS in the studio. Sadly, he was killed when their tour bus wrecked on icy roads in Sweden in 1986. The whole bad was there and saw it and..it was pretty gruesome. Burton was only 24. It's affected a lot of their music moving forward after that. Nothing Else Matters deals with his death, which is why it's one of slower, more sombre songs. They've done other Lovecraft songs; The Thing That Should Not Be, Dream No More, and All Nightmare Long.

You guys are correct. Thrash-metal is a subgenre of heavy metal, but heavy metal is also it's own genre. Metallicas first four albums are thrash metal classics. Their fifth is more mainstream heavy metal but still golden. Keep em coming respect
@shmick6079
@shmick6079 Жыл бұрын
I think people try to make heavy metal a sub genre of itself, which is silly. It’s just that when the classic bands were starting out there were no sub genres. To make it easier to understand, perhaps “classic metal” should be used.

Do "To Live Is To Die" The song was written as a tribute to the band's bassist Cliff Burton, who was killed in a bus accident in 1986. The music consists of riffs Burton had written that had not been incorporated into songs prior to his death. The song title is a phrase that Burton was fond of. Hetfield plays the second guitar solo during the slower midsection of the song. This is the last song Metallica released that Burton has a writing credit in, and is the band's only instrumental track with Jason Newsted (2nd Bassist) playing bass guitar.

What a fvckin half pure lie. Burton only introduced the book called The shadow of Innsmouth by Lovecraft. Dave Mustaine wrote the intro arpeggiated errie chord (which he later also used in Hanger 18 and other songs) followed by Burton wah absurd bass solo over 2 minute riff pattern written by Hedfield. The solo was written by Kirk, the outtro was written by Cliff, Lars and Hetfield and the whole song was arranged mainly by Lars. And in Orion, i know the song is all about Cliff and was also dedicated to him but Cliff only wrote the middle section bassline passage/solo and guitar harmony. The whole section was arranged by Lars and the main guitar riff was written by Hetfield. Research first even before you idolised someone.

I know that I'm a bit late on this reaction video. So, when I hear this song from Metallica. I like to keep my eyes closed for this instrumental masterpiece and visualize myself on a beach on a stormy night. Lightning and thunder in the distance and then from that distance. I see a colossal silhouette far in the ocean. I see the silhouette of Ktulu getting closer and the waves hitting the beach thrashes against the shore. The water rises comes into the land like a tsunami and the wind burst inland like a hurricane. Raining pouring down like no other. The lightning reaches overhead, and the thunder is so loud your ears start to burst and before you know it. Ktulu is overhead and everything goes black. You wake up thinking it is a nightmare even though you closed your eyes on purpose just to visualize this but as you know its just a figment of my imagination that got the best of me.

"Giant squid monster with wings" poor HP Lovecraft, to have his creation summed up so! LOL Cthulhu is a Cosmic entity created by H.P Lovecraft and first appeared in his short story "The Call of Cthulhu" in 1928. He made repeated appearances in Mr. Lovecraft's work and has inspired many other creators of various media throughout the decades. The most common features of Cthulhu are the humanoid head with lower half comprised of many tentacles, though they tend to be more like an octopus than a squid, the wings, and being bepedal. Oh, and the fact he drives everyone and everything completely bat-sh*t crazy! One of the best Lovecraft/Cthrulhu-inspired pieces I've seen is "In the Mouth of Madness" with Sam Neil. 10/10 highly recommend!

What's even crazier is how young they were when they recorded this. Lars and James were 21 at the time while Kirk and Cliff were a year older at 22.

In some spots, you can hear a 'growling' noise. This was the bassist Cliff Burton using a distortion pedal and a wah wah pedal on his bass. I mention it because it's something you never hear. It is extremely rare for a bassist to run distortion pedals, much less other assorted guitar FX pedals, but Cliff was kind of a pioneer. He has a solo track called Anesthesia where he utilizes everything in his tool kit. Definitely worth a listen.

Cool facts about this song: - Cthulhu is this monster created by HP Lovecraft, his power is to steal dreams of people. - Cthulhu needs to be "summoned" by cultists, he is like an ancient pagan god that is sleeping in the deep seas. - HP Lovecraft is the father of Horror/Cosmic Horror, his work heavily influentied many writers after him. - The intro was composed by Dave Mustaine (frontman of Megadeth, that was lead guitarist of Metallica). Dave was kicked and Metallica still used his parts with no Dave's concent. - Dave Mustaine uses this composition after in Megadeth on a song called "Hangar 18" (thats a hell of a song, check it out). - The bass guitar by Cliff Burton (RIP, 1986) is kinda low on the original mix, but he tries to create the Cthulhu scream. Check more Metallica instrumentals, "Orion" is my favorite song, it's so groovy and hard.

For Burton fans who know nothing about the song composition, Burton only introduced the book called The shadow of Innsmouth by Lovecraft. And in Orion (for those who keep mentioning Orion as sole Cliff written piece in this comment section), i know the song is all about Cliff and was also dedicated to him but Cliff only wrote the middle section bassline passage/solo and guitar harmony. The whole section was arranged by Lars and the main guitar riff was written by Hetfield. Meanwhile Cliff indeed introduced the band about scale harmonization staring from this 84 masterpiece. Knowledge is power.

I love the direction you guysv keep going with the reactions. Seem to really be hitting on the greats! Just a little advice, you guys should watch some of these bands do it live. It hits different when you can see them hitting notes on the instruments as your hearing it. Makes it real. Led Zeppelin, tool, Metallica, etc. Some bands really blow you mind.

this is Metallica's first song referencing the Cthulhu Mythos by (mostly) H.P. Lovecraft and other authors "Call of Ktulu" (references "Call of Cthulhu") "The Thing That Should Not Be" on *Master of Puppets (1986)* (references "Nyarlathotep", "The Shadow Over Innsmouth", "Dagon", "The Necronomicon", and "Call of Cthulhu" all by Lovecraft) "All Nightmare Long" on *Death Magnetic (2008)* (references "Hounds of Tindalos" by Frank Belnap Long, whose work is considered part of the Mythos ) and "Dream No More" on *Hardwired...To Self Destruct* (references "Call of Cthulhu" once again) James said Dream No More "was basically a follow-up to “Call of Ktulu,” for me. It was, Cthulhu answers. In the mythos he rises up, and if you even gaze at his reflection you turn to stone he’s so hideous and horrible."
