Love your guy’s reactions! Fun fact: this song is structured to display the five stages of grief. The beginning of the song when it’s a nice peaceful, acoustic riff that is interrupted by the drums is supposed to signify the suddenness of Cliff’s death. The main riff and the first solo is denial and anger, the interlude into the middle section is bargaining, the middle part is depression and then after that it goes back into the calm acoustic part which is acceptance. Truly masters of their craft!

Greetings from Sweden. Cliff died in a bus accident on a tour in Sweden in 1986. The tombstone with his portrait was raised and funded by fans here. Rest in peace
@sumonjamal1653
@sumonjamal1653 Жыл бұрын
According to the band, late bassist Cliff Burton wrote a poem that was inspired by TV Christian ministries... That was used for the track as a spoken word piece for 'To live is to die'... Cliff Burton was 24 when he was killed in a tour bus accident in Sweden in the fall of 1986. His sister Connie revealed that they lived w/ their parents while he was in Metallica, and Cliff would wake up every morning and put on Bill Graham Ministries on TV and would be intrigued w/ the "kingdom of salvation"... It was strange because Cliff Burton was not religious, smoked weed, and loved 70's rock music (Black Sabbath, ZZ Top were 2 faves)... James, Lars and Kirk recalled Cliff talking about Bill Graham Ministries and wrote this poem... The instrumental 'Orion' was written in 1985, and Cliff Burton co-wrote it... and there was this section where it goes quiet and he plays this sad melody w/ guitarist Kirk Hammett which sounds like someone saying goodbye... Looking back, it almost seems like Cliff Burton had a premonition that he was not going to live much longer... Metallica dedicated 'To live is to die' to Cliff and his talent. Kirk Hammett said the circumstances of Cliff's death was very unsettling... The night he died, the band was arguing about which bunks on the tour bus they could sleep in... so, they decided to draw cards from a playing deck to make the calls... Kirk said that Cliff drew the Ace of spades and demanded Kirk's bunk... Kirk gave in and slept up front. Late in the night, Kirk was woken up by the bus shaking violently before flipping over and sending everyone flying... With the bus on its side, Kirk got to the emergency hatch and opened it to see Cliff Burton's legs, his body pinned under the bus; Cliff was the only one thrown out the window from his bunk and the bus landed on him, killing him instantly. The bus driver claimed he had hit some black ice in the highway, but James couldn't find any after looking around... the driver likely lost control of the bus after overcorrecting at high speed... James and Kirk were screaming at the driver that night, demanding to know what happened, while a crane turned up to lift the bus and free some people still trapped inside, but Cliff was gone. After being treated for injuries, James, Lars and Kirk w/ their crew were sent to a hotel and they just drank heavily to cope w/ the trauma.

Please check out "In This River" by Black Label Society live in Paris, specifically the live in Paris version. One of the best guitar solos you'll ever see, and it's completely improvised on the spot. It's a tribute to Dimebag Darrell, Pantera's guitarist who was murdered on stage while performing by a gunman. The guitarist of Black Label Society (Zakk Wylde) was good friends with him.

This is not Cliff playing... This is the last song with parts written by Cliff... He died on the Masters of Puppets tour in 86... You still need to listen to the studio version of Orion to really hear the brilliance of Cliff... that and Anesthesia off Kill em all are the best pieces of Cliffs playing...
