Investors won't let you tell your slave story if it's "fantasy", if if you're related to him, suddenly, that's a selling point. The story is still depicting horrible things that happened in real life. That's the value of the story, making sure they can see a depiction of the history and can't just ignore it or claim it wasn't that bad. And not everyone will read the academic literature that further describes and compiles these events, so visual metaphors help to create empathy and understanding.
