Tammi Terrell was such a beauty both inside & out. She unfortunately experienced so much abuse at an early age but continued chasing her dreams till her untimely death. Marvin Gaye adored her & their duets together are classics. Legendary.

She was chronically abused by James Brown and David Ruffin and graped at age 11. Marvin Gaye was the first close male friend who didn't abuse her, was so heartbroken after her death at 24. He never recovered. He stayed high on drugs to avoid his shattered heart.

This song is from 1967 and Marvin Gaye was 28 years old. Marvin Gaye was 44 when he was shot and killed by his father. He is one of the greatest R&B artists of all time with many songs featuring social and anti-war content which Motown didn't want to do originally but acquiesced given Marvin Gaye's talent and promise. Tammi Terrell was a beautiful and gifted singer with a very bright future as a singer. Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell had several big hits and were a promising duo when she collapsed into Marvin Gaye's arms as they were performing. She had a brain tumor which killed her at the age of 24. Marvin Gaye never fully recovered from her death. He became depressed and addicted to drugs for some time. He had also attempted suicide. He refused to perform and even tried to be a football player. Eventually, he came back to the studio and recorded the "What's Goin' On" album, partly a reaction to Tammi Terrell's death. Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin On" album was ranked the #1 greatest album of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.

Marvin Gaye was 44 years old when he was killed. The next day would have been his 45th birthday. Such a tragedy. He was one of a kind. Right up there with Al Green, Luther Vandross, Otis Redding. Such amazing music and unique artists. Today you'd be hard pressed to find any resemblance of that.

Love this song! Tami Terrell died tragically young of a brain tumor I believe. Marvin had a lot of problems with drugs. He and his father got into it and his father shot him on April Fool's Day. I think it was 1985. I had just moved into my new apt in L.A. and was painting my bedroom when the radio DJ said Marvin Gaye had been shot...I thought it was a bad joke. He was so talented. What a waste.

Marvin slid down to the floor after the first shot.” The singer was pronounced dead at a hospital less than an hour later. His brother Frankie, who lived next door, was holding him as he died and claimed his last words were: “I got what I wanted… I couldn't do it myself, so I made him do it." Gaye's siblings believed that his death was a "premeditated suicide" Test results showed that he had elements of cocaine and PCP (or angel dust) in his system. Marvin was often suicidal and paranoid, and by now was afraid of leaving his room and spoke of little besides suicide and death. He sometimes wore three overcoats and put his shoes on the wrong feet.Four days before his death, according to his sister Jeanne, Gaye had tried to kill himself by jumping out of a speeding sports car, suffering only minor bruises. Jeanne contended that "there was no doubt Marvin wanted to die" and that he "couldn't take any more."
