After rebuilding the top end or rather the heads and replacing the piston rings on my 1963 Citroen 2cv the engine has finally bedded in its time for its first service and fix some leaks and stuff

I had two 2cvs in the late seventies and loved them. There was a company in West London who imported them from Belgium. You could get a runner with a year's M.O.T. for £200 or a really decent car for £400. Times have changed!

Great video, it’s certainly good to see Jolene again! Re your dad’s R12, I actually learnt to drive in my dad’s R12 and it was a great little car. Unfortunately I scraped the front offside wing a week before he got his new Citroen GS. He was none too pleased, bless him. Keep up the great work.

Thanks for the iridium plug tip. I will look for an equivalent for my aircooled 6v VWs.

Make sure you have nice flexible plug leads too as they gain resistance with age

Very informative video. I think I will do an oil change on my 2CV6. :) Never done it before, but, after watching your video, I think I'll give it a try. I use Total 20W50 engine oil.

A very quick note to say to folk watching that if you're using standard B6HS NGK (-S does actually mean Standard), gap the plugs to the owner's manual specification of 0.6mm. Modern plugs are always gapped much wider these days (0.8mm or even 1.0mm) from the factory, because they're intended for 12 volt and importantly coil ignition (as opposed to distributors), that can generate a spark strong enough to bridge the wider gap. It's the strength and thus the duration of the spark that allows them to fire modern direct injection ultra, ultra lean air-fuel ratio engines (which is what gives them 45-50 average mpg). A 6 volt system wouldn't fire a wide gap on a Standard plug. The only reason it fires the Iridiums without re-gapping is because of the low resistance of the centre electrode, being 'needle thin'. The iridium metal is extremely resistant to spark erosion, which is what enables modern petrol engines to have very long service intervals, because the plugs don't need to come out every 6000 miles to have their gaps closed up - even a standard plug should last 12,000 miles with a good clean a re-gap at 6.

Ngk say you should never gap their iridium plugs and its virtually impossible to do with out damaging the electrode because its so fine. I swear by iridiums with a 6V system it gives a much better cold start and cleaner running which is a godsend with such low compression

I use in my 2cv, smith and allan 20w-50 mineral multigrade engine oil which is good price in uk.

What mileage do you change the gearbox oil at Oliver? On my 86 special, I do it every 3000 along with the oil but have never changed my 54 ripple gearbox oil as I haven’t put the miles on it.

I ran my 2CV from UK to Holland and all the way down to Gibraltar then on to Sahara then back via Italy and the Alps, Black Forest on to Ypres in Belgium in 28 days - I decided to flush it and fill it with Shell Helix 5W40 full synthetic as it was going to be some 5,000 miles hot August journey - I feared mineral oil would need a change half way round - I have to say I had no issues it ran like a clock and seemed to get better the hotter the weather got - no half way oil chane needed - I guess most of the time we were doing 45 - 60mph - The engine was the van 603cc which i think was 29hp as the compression is a little lower for variable low octane found in Morocco

firstly that's awesome well done! as for oil its more about how some oils react with some bearing metals especially in older engines and unfortunately a lot of cars sit for far too long and that's when the damage is usually done.

@@OliverPickard Thanks Oliver - I know some early gearbox synthetic Hypoid oils can have a corrosive effect on "yellow metal" however on my 1982 engine the synthetic engine oil ran beautifully

Hi Oliver, just wondering if you make a point of using non detergent oil as well? I have a pre war Standard and they also have no filter. The detergent oils are designed to keep contaminants in suspension for the filter to collect which is bad for those of us without filters. Non detergent oil allows it to settle in the sump in a sludge that is drained with the regular oil changes.
