Nice Matthew Sweet pickup. I did a Richard X. Heyman video a LONG time ago - I actually got my copy of Living Room from Richard's wife as they did mail order - he for MANY years would actually come and do a concert in your house for only a few hundred bucks. Cornerstone is in my top 20 albums of all time and the best from him.

Thanks, Kris. Need to be better at catching up on your videos. I'll have to search for your Richard Heyman video. Didn't know you featured him and were such a fan! I really need to pull the trigger on his Cornerstone CD I've been watching on eBay. Hope you and Marissa are doing well!

Hi Hanna. Wow ! I can see you are going deep on your favorite genres on vinyl for this video. I mean I have seen you going deep on CD on Power Pop and Jangle before but not as much on vinyl like on your last few videos. I recently got some Power Pop vinyl from your first video I didn't have, Raspberries, Badfinger, Dwight Twilley, Records, Beat, Shoes, Creenshaw, Nick Lowe, just the basics, and also found a couple of Power Pop records I had on my own my closet !, a Bram Tachcovsky album and a really obscure PPop album from The Bottles, can you believe it? lol. I has those all those years on my neglected albums box and I didn't know they were power pop, but they are great. I think I'll have stop stop there cause the rest you are showing it's hard to find, but I'm hopeful the only real vinyl store on my country is having this sale, up to 25,000 old titles they have on their warehouse so I expect to find some great stuff there very cheap, cause I don't think they know anything about Jangle, alternative, punk, power pop etc. That Shoes album was a great find, I only have their next two albums, I think that one is very rare. Lastly I'm going to recommend to you this great PPop band from Mexico I have been a fan for some time called La Gusana Ciega, search for their song Tornasol (the live version) I think you'll love that. Hi Alejandro! I do like digging deeper in my favorite genres because there is so much to explore. If I like a genre I just have to have more of it! Sounds like you've been picking up some essentials lately and that is great to hear! I need to get some Bram Tchaikovsky in the collection still. I probably have even more obscure ones to show next time! That warehouse sale will turn up some great stuff, no doubt! Yes, this Black Vinyl Shoes record is somewhat hard to find. Not an everyday find, that's for sure. I like the track from La Gusana Ciega you included. Love those guitars! Cheers!

Hello Hanna; Good to see you hope you are well, & not getting too much snow. We are here in Snow City NY. The Shake Some action book looks good. Nice to have 45 rpm records as an attachment. All records should come that way. The Dwight Twilley LP's are good listens. Matthew Sweet good power pop, always liked the Sail On Sailor rendition. The Pezband's 2nd LP good bouncy pop. Richard Heyman, saw him some years back. Good that you found the Shoes & Flamin Groovies LP's. Some very good jangle & power pop showings. Well done video. Take care, stay warm. Tina & Pat!~

Tina and Pat, good evening! Hope you are staying warm as well. We've had a decent amount of snow this season and horribly frigid temps earlier this week. Love these videos, Hanna. You show the classics and the lesser knowns. That power pop book will serve as a great reference guide for you. I have that Twilley album, but really want to find the first two Dwight Twilley Band LPs. Only Life by The Feelies is great, and doesn’t get as much attention as Crazy Rhythms and The Good Earth. Appreciate the deep dives into Tommy Keene and The Windbreakers. Not familiar to me and it’s great to hear that Keene worked with Dixon and The Windbreakers with Easter. Two of NC’s finest sons. I hope you’re doing well. Always great to see you. Cheers! ✌🏻

Hey there, Jon! Thanks so much for stopping by! Glad you dig the power pop focus. I actually have some more obscure stuff to show in Part 2. The first 2 Twilley albums aren't the easiest to find. The only time I've seen Twilley Don't Mind was in Lincoln months ago so I picked it up quick. And I found "Sincerely" in Portland on my fun trip there early last year before the pandemic really blew up. Still hoping to find The Good Earth from the Feelies. I have no doubt that you'd love the Windbreakers and the brilliant Mr. Keene! Easter is a genius! Take care. Hope to catch up on some of yours soon!

I really admire your knowledge of the power pop and jangle pop genres. You showed some obscure stuff like Crippled Pilgrims who I had not heard of before. Tommy Keene was a great artist and it's a shame he passed. I LOVE your The Damned shirt! That was nice of Nazz to send that along with The Three O'Clock LP. Love their song "Susie's On The Ball Now" which I think I told you before. I have a Damned shirt that has a skull on the front. People stare at it when I wear it. lol Flat Duo Jets was a great band - I saw them play in Memphis in the '90s. Their self titled album is stellar. Liked The Red Button needle drop. Speaking of Dom Mariani his solo record Homespun Blues and Greens is stellar and of course Someloves and Stems output essential. Although I'm kinda new to the power pop world, I do have some recommendations to pass along. First up, we have The Beths. Amazing group from New Zealand. They released an incredible sophomore album just last year. I've been spinning the heck out of it lately. It's certainly no slump, that's for sure! Give them a listen, I reckon you'd really dig their sound :) Next two lean more on the jangle pop side. They are Beach Fossils and Real Estate. Kinda late to the party with these guys. I'm not sure how I managed to overlook their material for so long. They've been around for over a decade now! Still, better late than never, right? Real Estate also dropped a fine album last year. So far, I'm very impressed with what 2020 had to offer us! Well, for music anyway... the rest be damned!!

Hey Hanna, fantastic to see you back :) Man, when it comes to shoegaze and powerpop you really dive in deep!! That John Borack book looks to be an incredible resource; love the addendum highlighting the differences between the rankings in the 2 books. I'm with you on Thirteen, definitely underrated. Amen on Rick Menck's drumming!! That sounds very interesting on Catspaw with NY's guitar sounds featuring strongly. Definitely can hear bit of Replacements and even Husker in the Crippled Pilgrims. Aah yes, DM3, hard to do a lot wrong with Mr Mariani. And great stuff seeing Sunnyboys, great seeing an original 80s Mushroom label over there in your hands! (I remember buying some of my very first 7"s with that label on it as a pre-teen in the late 80s). Mitch Easter productions are gonna be good (and the clip backs that up) - might need to check that Windbreakers! Thanks for this one Hanna, good to hear from you. Cheers- Dean

Hey Dean! It's snowing again as I type this. We've had quite the snowy 2021. I'm totally guilty of deep diving on the genres I really love. The rabbit hole effect. ;-) Really happy I was able to get my hands on this book from John Borack. It's a winner, but it also has hurt my bank account with having me hunt down all these other brilliant albums I had never heard of before! Crippled Pilgrims...wish they would have lasted. They were really underrated! I wish I could find more of Dom Mariani's stuff via Someloves and the Stems, but I just never have come across anything. Not the cheapest finds on Discogs and eBay, either. Can't believe I was able to snag Sunnyboys Individuals on vinyl for $20 on eBay. I guess I just got lucky that day. See if you can find his 1984 Dolphin Records release. Also, Understanding Jane is a gem, and Miracle Legion's The Backyard and Snacks and Candy were modest regional "hits" on Boston commercial and college radio for and the albums they come from are also worth hearing. It’s great to see another video, especially concerning power/jangle pop. I am going to have to look into getting that book. You have been my number one source, but I’m sure the book will have some interesting suggestions. I just picked some Dwight Twilley albums as well. Girlfriend might be my favorite Matthew Sweet album, but I don’t have his new one. Your description of it intrigued me. I see that my favorite Replacements and R.E.M. albums are on display behind you. I have not listened to that Icicle Works album in years. I will need to pull it out. By the way, I told you I would give you my impression of the Lee Hazelwood/Ann Margret reissue. I finally got around to listening to it and while it does not work as well as the Sinatra/Hazelwood recordings it was an enjoyable listen. There is not as much of a psych vibe. There are a few songs that don’t work but I enjoyed it. Loved your update. -Randy

Very cool that you love the 2 albums I had on display behind me. Sometimes I can't decide which is my favorite, Tim or Pleased to Meet Me. My favorite from R.E.M. is either Murmur or Reckoning..most of the time it's Reckoning. I just got a few interesting R.E.M. bootlegs. The Icicle Works debut is always a good listen! Thanks for giving me your impression about that Hazelwood/Margaret LP. I think I'll give it a sample on Apple Music as I'm intrigued. I'd prefer a psych vibe but I'm still wanting to hear it. So many Great choices here! Love all the Twilley records, and agree with you about “Scuba Divers”. First EMI release.. love “Touchin The Wind” and “ Later That Night” really all of dude one.EMI /Twilley struck gold with the next record “Jungle” and the hit single”Girls”., also really good but I may like Scuba Divers a bit better. “ The Cabbage” from Teenage Fanclub’s”13” has long my favorite song ever.. hooks, harmonies,to the point lyrical sentiment ..perfect. I like Bobby Sutliff “ Only Ghosts Remain” a lot as well. Great songs , the Mitch Easter stamp, as his great cover of Richard Thompson’s “Small Town Romance “.

Hi Michael! I definitely like Scuba Divers more than Twilley's Jungle album. I feel that Jungle is pretty uneven. Still some great tunes on it, though. Love those guitars on "The Cabbage" from TF! What great melodies and harmonies throughout! I feel that album is really overlooked from their catalog! Glad to hear you are a Bobby Sutliff fan, too! And anything Mitch Easter touches is gold!

Hey.. Gretchen’s Wheel do a great cover of Matthew Sweet’s “Walk Out” as well. A friend of mine found me an original personal independent pressing of “Black Vinyl Shoes” in the ‘70’s from a Goodwill. It’s still got the iron on, different cover but same track listing as the PVC reissue version.. the one that I play. I still think it’s their best, though “Present Tense” is close. I think “Ignition” is great too! “Nobody to Blame” is in my top faves from them.I drummed in a band in Boston , The Jigsaws, in the ‘90’s that opened for a some of the PP bands of the time when they were in town, including Shoes on one of their rare tours. It was a thrill seeing/ meeting them and they were great. Love TK’s “Songs From The Film”. His next Geffen record “Based on Happy Times” is also excellent. Do you have any records by The Connells? “Ring” imo is their best, but “Fun and Games” is close.

Wow, these selections are right on the money. Songs from Northern Britain is, right now, my favorite Teenage Fanclub LP, and that debut from Icicle Works has been with me since it first came out, brilliant songwriting from Ian McNabb, and the drumming is amazing! Small price of a bicycle is also very good, still not as good as the debut, tho. I don't think I've heard you mention one of my favorite power pop bands of the late 80's/early 90's, Wonderstuff. If you haven't heard them I would suggest their first 3. The debut (The Eight Legged Groove Machine--great title, eh?) is the most power pop and is extremely infectious. And lastly, you know how I feel about the Jazz Butcher. Quirky and impossibly catchy. Take care!

Hey Ian! I thank you again for the generosity of the package you sent. Very cool that Songs of Northern Britain is your fave by TF. Mine is still Grand Prix, but it's hard to rank them because all their albums are pretty magnificent! Oh yes, the drumming on that Icicle Works debut is incredible! I need to check out Wonderstuff. I have seen their CDs before but didn't pick them up because I just wasn't familiar. Now you have prompted me to check them out further, thank you! The Jazz Butcher...I'm always on the hunt for more. That book looks really cool and a great way for delving a bit deeper into the genre. It's always good to have a guide. Teenage Fan Club is yet another band I have never explored. I should probably try out one of their albums. Thirteen is a cover I recognize quite well from my days of working in a record stores. Dwight Twilley seems like a great underground find. Glad to see you're picking up the Intervention releases of Matthew Sweet. They've all been outstanding. I have a couple of them and I am hoping he will do Blue Sky On Mars. Girlfriend will always be my favorite though as it was my introduction to him. Love Tractor sounds interesting. I could definitely go for the instrumental sound. I am curious, what did you think of the Replacements reissue? Love the cover to that Icicle Works. The Jazz Butcher sounds like an album that would be right up my alley. That copy of the Shoes album looks nice. I remembered your other one being a bit beat. In those cases, with the albums you love, it always good to get a nice clean copy. So many artists in this one that I am unfamiliar with. Thanks for supplying the needle drops when you could and I dug the Sunnyboys one.

Thanks, Paul! We're getting more snow as I type this. Ohhh, Teenage Fanclub are probably THE essential power pop band of the 90s. Other high ups of that decade would of course be Matthew Sweet and the Posies. I'll try to hook you up with some TF. Dwight Twilley...definitely an underrated but essential power pop artist! Blue Sky on Mars would be an excellent reissue, no doubt. I like that one, too and just have it on CD. I really want In Reverse, though, more than anything! Love Tractor were more unique, being more instrumental. You might like them. I'm still working my way through the CDs in the Replacements box set so I can't fully comment yet, but I will let you know my full opinion soon. I only had the CD box set of Black Vinyl Shoes before so it's nice to get it on vinyl, too. You know how it is...sometimes us addicts need both CD and vinyl copies! Ha! Ah, this was just what I needed to brighten up my week :) Thank you, Hanna! Power pop really lifts the spirits, doesn't it? Got a slight confession to make... I only hopped on the power pop train in the last year or two, so I'm still fairly new to the genre. My collection is in dire need of some albums! That book by John Borack sounds like the perfect guide to get the ball rolling. I hope there are some copies still available! Oh, and if it hasn't already been said, that book is THICK. I'm not completely out of the loop when it comes to power pop. Some of my favourites you mentioned are The dB's, Matthew Sweet, Flamin' Groovies, The Cars, Sunnyboys, and The Posies. Basically, all the essentials. I'm such a normie! Who would you suggest as a top priority for sampling next? Last of all, amazing video yet again! I could easily have watched another 20 minutes of rambling :P At this stage though, I feel like I've spent more time learning about power pop than actually listening to it! Hi Nic! Yeah, power pop does quite well at lifting the spirits and making everything more tolerable! John Borack's book really is the perfect resource when it comes to power pop. Hi Hanna. Nice to see you again. You look wonderful as always. At first when you mentioned Neil Young's guitar sound is all over the Matthew album I did not think that you approved. I thought that you were curious as to why he is sounding so much like Neil. But then you explained that you dug it. My take on it would be 'why sound like Neil Young when you sound like Matthew Sweet'? Matthew created his own unique guitar sound going back to Girlfriend in 1991. I love the song 'Blown Away' on the new album. I think he is a big fan of Neil if I remember right. Good to hear that it is your number one so far this year. Didn't the Jazz Butcher write a song about a jungle? I remember something by them that had jungle in the title if I remember right. 'Away' is my all time favorite Feelies song. I love the slow progression build up in the intro. Love it. Love that band. Glenn Mercer is a brilliant songwriter. One of the best {I learned this from you} jangle bands of the eighties. I would have just said one of the best bands of the eighties. But since I learned all about jangle pop from you I will now use it to describe many more bands. {smile} Always a pleasure hanging with you Hanna. Stay warm. Pat Fish still streams some live performances here and there on Facebook I believe. So cool to hear that "Away" is your favorite tune from the Feelies. Really is an incredible song and yes, they were jangle pop all the way! :-) Oh yes, I was totally fine with Matthew channeling some Neil on this new record. Matthew can do no wrong! So glad you enjoy my channel! I apologize for the delay in response. Have just returned from a road trip. Cheers!

Hey Hanna! First, thanks for doing these videos! I'm a big Matthew Sweet fan too so I'll definitely check out that new Catspaw. I'm tempted to get that Altered Beast reissue from Intervention Records as it's my favorite Sweet album, but I'm disappointed with the Intervention vinyl reissue of 100% Fun. I'd like your opinion on that. I was excited to pick that up because of course it's a fantastic album, and Intervention seems serious about sound, but I compared that reissue with the CD and I can't say it sounds better. The vinyl sounds muddy to me. Maybe it's not worse than the CD, which is (typical for CDs) tinny on the high end, but overall I'm not sure it was worth the money for someone like me that already has the CD. What do you think about the sound quality of your Altered Beast vs. the CD? Please keep up the great work!

the second Flamin' Groovies line up that did Shake Some Action, Now & Jumpin' in the Night were good, but the Lineup With Roy Loney, Cyril Jordon, George Alexander, Tim Lynch & Danny Mihm are in my opinion much better. I saw the first lineup at the Music Box in Omaha in October 1969 days after dropping out of college. Sneakers (10" self released on their Snazz label) and Supersnazz (Epic) were purchased along with a ticket to the show about a week before I saw them in a record store down in the Old Market. I don't remember the name of the record store but you had to go down 4 or five steps to get in. Flamingo & Teenage Head are also from this lineup. Last time I saw them was January 2020 yet again a different lineup. Cyril Jordan is the only member in every lineup.
