I love all bands mentioned today. Grew up with Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, The Beach Boys, The Byrds. Love love Big Star, very underrated band Alex Chilton and Chris Bell deserve more fame. Love Veruca Salt and Juliana Hatfield (solo and with Lemonheads and The Juliana Hatfield Three) especially their first two albums I still have them on CD. Smashing Pumpkins is one of the few bands I can't stop listening like The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Depeche Mode, Cocteau Twins, Dad Can Dance, Belly, L7, Sonic Youth, Jane's Addiction, The Darling Buds, The Primitives, or Nine In Nails, among many others I love.

Glad to see someone of your generation appreciating Big Star. They always kind of reminded me of Bad Finger. Both bands have a very limited catalog and we're only together for a short period of time but they made great music and their influence runs deep. Both were plagued by mental illness and tragedy but their legacy lives on. I'd like to give a shout out to Shuggie Otis (Inspiration Information) and Love (forever changes) as two albums you could maybe comment on. From one rocker to another, I dig what you got going on here keep it up!

I'm sure they'd be in my top 50...along with the Police. I am really digging Deep Purple lately, especially their earlier material. Thanks for watching and taking the time to include your list! I too love the 'Strawberries' album! 🤩 I'd first gotten into The Damned via the 'Damned But Not Forgotten' compilation album lent to me by a friend around 1990, and another friend then lent me his 'The Light At The End Of The Tunnel' one 🙂And now my 17-year-old Son also likes them a lot, especially 'Dozen Girls' 😁(not the silly 'thermal underwear' version, though! 😆)

Cool list. These things are always fun to watch. It also provides alot of insight into our tastes. Thanks for sharing. I have mad love for Big Star. Those records are just magic. I was lucky enough to see Big Star three times and was at the Levitt Shell Alex tribute in Memphis the year he passed. Was even luckier to have met Alex. He was cool, to be sure. Jody is a sweetheart and all the nice things you hear about him are true. At that tribute show, I spotted John Fry and walked up and shook his hand and just said how much I appreciated what he did. I think he was a little perplexed at my outpouring. He really was a humble dude. I have so many Memphis stories, so I won't go on. Thanks for sharing... TB

Great list of bands/artists. Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s Everybody Knows album still sounds fresh. So many highlights on the album - I love the mysterious intro to Cowgirl in the Sand. Hey Hanna, Well I quite enjoyed this, even though I'm not a rock person for the most part...it of course doesn't matter....I have the same passion for my own top 20 if I were to ever make a list. :-) Hard not to appreciate Jimi, whatever one is into. Quite a striking cover on that first REM! I seen a documentary on them once and found them to have quite an interesting story. As soon as you showed Neil Young, I thought of our sister Lis coming in with a 'Wooo!' ;-) I actually have always liked Neil very much and have 5 or 6 of his albums. My personal favorite is 'Prairie Wind'. My best buddy growing up was obsessed with The Doors, and I guess I got into them a bit at least vicariously through him. Nothing at all wrong with off-the-cuff videos. :-) For sure, bring on the variety of topics. Always enjoyable. -Carm

Wow. Seems like it''s all the rage to be posting up ones' "Vinyl Hit Lists" up in this joint lately...but yours are the most interesting not least of all because of our general common tastes. We are joined at the hip with the Doors (1st and all), The Smiths (per your previous post in "Hatful Of Hollow" and this ones' "Queen Is Dead"), X's first two releases specifically and Neil Young's second solo effort). We respectfully but vehemently part company with Pet Sounds, The Byrds, and to a lesser degree The Who. It feels like you and I lose each other in the turn when you take a decidedly more folky route and I tend to curve into psychedelic/alt--(Were this my compendium. I would throw something like Love & Rockets' "Express" in the mix somewhere). Going to give My Bloody Valentine a shot--your tastes are well secure enough for me to take you at your word (ear) on this. Thank you for your posts, interesting and thought provoking as ever...it's so important to keep an open ear and you are a great template!

Great list of fantastic artists and bands! I lived in Chapel Hill for 7 years and saw so many shows at Cat's Cradle concert venue with several of these artists. I'm a musician and was a regular at the cradle and got to meet several of the artists you've listed. A few stories you might like - saw Big Star Third show years ago. This was a show recreating Big Star's third album (obviously) including Jody Stephens, Mike Mills, Chris Stamey, Mitch Easter, and others. Jody Stephens is a very sweet guy and generous with taking photos with fans - such a genuine smile he has! X played a show at the cradle also - fun fact: John Doe is one huggy guy. He loves to wander around after a show and hug the fans and have photos taken. Seen Robyn Hitchcock many times (with the Venus 3) - super nice guy and enjoys chatting with fans and signing records (as does Peter Buck). I used to run into Chris Stamey at the local multiplex where he would be taking his daughter to see the latest Disney-Pixar movie. Very genuine guy and a local record producer. He produced records by my guitar teacher. Peter Holsapple is a kinda quiet guy but very kind. He was coaxed up on stage to play The Ballad of John and Yoko with the Minus 5 when they were playing at the cradle. Saw the dBs just once - great show. I spoke with Chris Stamey after the Big Star thing and he said "thanks for coming out - and come see the dBs in a couple weeks." The cradle also hosted a tribute night to Alex Chilton featuring several local musicians. Such a wonderful night and such reverence for the man by all in attendance! Side fact: the Depeche Mode show at the United Center in Chicago during their Spirit tour was one of the best shows I've ever seen!!! Crazy crowd and Gahan was on fire that night. Wish I could relive that one. Don Dixon is an incredibly nice guy and has an amazingly powerful voice. Mitch Easter plays shows around the area and produces records at his studio outside of Winston-Salem. One Halloween night (I was dressed as the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland) I walked up in costume to help Mitch and his band load his equipment into a venue, and he kind of freaked out when I grabbed an amplifier until his wife said "Oh, that's Kevin." I was such a fan boy of R.E.M. and their early records produced by Dixon and Easter - it was such fun to hang out with Easter and Dixon and even help them load in and out of shows. Any way - great list again. I'll have to check out Aimee Mann solo stuff, more Veruca Salt, and Julia Hatfield. Thanks!

Hi! I appreciate you being here and leaving a wonderful comment! Isn't Jody Stephens amazing? You have been to so many INCREDIBLE shows! I'm quite jealous! I did a Who ranking video as well as a Pete Townshend one if you want to check those out from my channel. I also saw The Who for the first time in 2002. Unfortunately, John Entwistle had died just before the tour. I was bummed. I've seen them 3 times total. Long live rock!

Greetings Hanna, just discovered this video from your "archives".Love your list. Because of the passage of time, perhaps your current top 20 has a different look. For my list I have omitted some bands with small discographies: Suburban Lawns, Joy Division, Big Star, Jellyfish. My top 20, in reverse order: 20 Dead Can Dance 19 Mazzy Star 18 Talking Heads 17 Pink Floyd (pre 1980) 16 New Model Army 15 Stan Ridgway/Wall of Voodoo 14 The Damned 13 The Church 12 The Smiths 11 Siouxsie and the Banshees 10 Sonic Youth 9 Fish Karma 8 The Jesus and Mary Chain 7 Nina Nastasia 6 The Doors 5 Robyn Hitchcock (plus Egyptians and Soft Boys) 4 The Billy Nayer Show 3 X 2 Sparklehorse 1 XTC Honorable mentions: Magazine, Wire, Laurie Anderson, The Sound, Dirty Three, Mercury Rev, The Residents, Alice Donut, PJ Harvey.

Hi Todd! Thanks for joining in the fun here and providing your top 20 list! Damn, I love Jellyfish, too and wish they had a bigger catalog (Andy, come back!). What's your favorite Dead Can Dance LP? So far I just have a compilation of their early material and Anastasis and Spiritchaser. I'm totally unfamiliar with Fish Karma, Nina Nastasia, and the Billy Nayer Show, so you gave me some bands to explore here! Yay on the honorable mentions, too, especially with Magazine, the Sound, and Dirty Three! Whoop whoop!

Subscribed! Very awesome list. I have different faves for many of these groups, but that just goes to show how great they are. For example, I was thinking of three other Neil Young LPs when you mentioned his live stuff (Songs for Judy, Weld, Live Rust) only to be stumped. I'll be digging out that Massey Hall album and a couple of your top 20 picks that I'm not that familiar with for next week's playlist for sure. My top 20: Neil Young, Aimee Mann, PJ Harvey, My Bloody Valentine, The Replacements, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Liz Phair, Talking Heads, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Aztec Camera, The Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, Cheap Trick, Aerosmith, R.E.M., Sigur Rós, The Byrds, Tom Waits.

@@TheOmahaIntrovert That set was a revelation to me when I got it last year. So great! As for Aztec Camera, High Land, Hard Rain is the LP to get. Just about every track is a gem. I can't imagine a power-pop/alternative/new wave fan not digging it. Their other LPs are spotty to say the least, but if you like their debut enough, seek out Knife. The moody title track rivals anything they've ever done.

Thanks, Brett! I think we differ in our likes with a lot of 80s bands. I go for more of the alternative and synth pop/goth side of the 80s like Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Love & Rockets, the Cure, etc. and you go for more of the pop side of the 80s, which is totally awesome, too. Variety is the spice of life and its what makes the world go 'round! ~Hanna

Hi, thanks for taking the time and effort to do this video. It was interesting seeing your choices. Out of the twenty artists you showed i have music by seventeen of them in my collection so i can see why you chose those specific artists. Personally i don`t think i could do a favourite top twenty list or even a top hundred list because i like so many artists and different genres of music. And it`s all of equal importance to me that i couldn`t choose one over the other. Two artists that would definitely be in a top twenty list of mine are the Sex Pistols and The Cure. You mentioned Jazz. Personally i`m not the biggest Jazz fan but have you heard Shhh - Peaceful by Miles Davis ? I find a lot his music a bit directionless but Shhh - Peaceful from his album In A Silent Way is a really deep, lush sounding track. It`s quite relaxing and beautiful. You mentioned Harvest Moon by Neil Young. The track Harvest Moon from that album is so beautiful it actually made me cry the first time i heard it. Completely random question, but has a piece of music ever made you cry ? I`d love to hear your favourite Depeche Mode songs lists. Thanks.

Awesome video Hanna. Great insight into your musical tastes. Not that we didn't already know a lot of these. I've been considering making a Top 100 albums video series like others have done but that just seems too daunting a task. Plus a lot of my top 20 would be multiple albums from only a few artists. People would tell me to expand my horizons. 🤔 BUT this top 20 bands/artists is a very interesting concept that I may borrow at some point. Spoiler alert #1 is Genesis! Ha! Wish I could listen to them for the first time all over again! Their music never gets tiring, though! Hope you're having a great Tuesday! Thanks. ~Hanna

Came across your vids under the “recommended for you” links. And when I saw that 7 of your Top 20 are also in my Top 20 I had to hit the subscribe button! Jimi, The Doors, The Who, Beach Boys, Pumpkins, REM, and Veruca! I’m an American living in Sweden now, and am so blown away at all the great new rock bands here in Europe. If you like female fronted bands with killer guitar check out Pip Blom from Holland. She would’ve fit in perfectly in the 1990’s Alternative scene. They (her band is also called Pip Blom) do not even make their U.S. debut until March at South By Southwest and their debut album doesn’t come out until May. They’ve released several singles and a kick ass EP so far and they are one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen.

I indeed love female-fronted bands and I always appreciate recommendations. I will for sure check out Pip Blom! I have written it down in my notebook. I'm sure she's up my alley if the music has that classic alternative 90s sound. Much thanks! Do you like Letters to Cleo? They're another favorite of mine from the 90s.

The Omaha Introvert Of course I’m a Letters To Cleo fan! Saw them a couple of times in concert back in the day. Kay Hanley has been jamming with Belly (another of my faves) a lot in 2018 which really made me happy to see. Pip Blom also has a female drummer (who is one of the hardest rocking drummers there is now) and Pip’s little brother is on rhythm guitar (and I’m convinced he’ll be a solo star someday, too since he’s so wild onstage)!

The Omaha Introvert Glad to hear you like Belly, too! So happy they’ve reunited after 23 years apart and released a phenomenal new album! They were just as good in concert last year as they were in the ‘90’s. I tried to find some good Pip Blom footage with Gini Cameron on drums (she’s only been in the band for a few months...most KZfaq footage has their previous male drummer). This Dutch TV footage from a couple days ago is pretty good: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/odOoapWK192qkmg.html I was so blown away with Gini’s drumming when I saw them in Dublin in November that I immediately ran up to her as she left the stage after their encore just so I could tell her how awesome I think she is! I wound up talking to Gini for an hour then talked to Pip herself for about 30 minutes after that...much to my wife’s chagrin! 😄 (I married a Swedish woman that’s why I’m living here now.) The fans in Dublin even chanted “Gini! Gini!” in between each song, which is something I’ve never seen for a drummer in the thousands of concerts I’ve attended. Needless to say, I am counting down the days until I see Pip Blom again in Paris next month.

I never expected to see X in your top 20. What a nice surprise Hanna. I’m from Australia where they’re almost unknown. I did pick up the first three albums on vinyl about 5 or six years ago and love them to bits. I since bought one of those 5 classic albums in a cheap box CD things. I still like the first three best. The new one Alphabetland is very good and it is nice to see Robbie Krieger guesting. It took me a few listens to get what X were up to with the vocal harmonies but it’s actually quite extraordinary at times and grew to love it very quickly. Have you ever listened to all female band The Raincoats? Their first three albums were released 77-84 and then they reformed in the 90s and released another album. Your top 20 list I’d guess you’re a fan already and if not you may like them. Kurt Cobain was a big fan. It was a treat to see Juliana Hatfield as a pick as she was well known in Australia in the early/mid 90s and had a bit of airplay. I’m sure you knew X were an early ‘life changing’ influence on Hatfield too. The Lemonheads album It’s a Shame About Ray was very popular here and Juliana Hatfield played on it. I’ll have to check out some of her albums as I haven’t really heard her since the 90s. There are a lot of other artist I like in your list and could talk about but I’ll leave it there for now except I love Big Star, especially Radio City. Sorry for responding to older videos. Cheers!

Hi John! Thanks so much for catching my top 20 bands video! It hasn't changed much, although I'd try to add the Church in there somehow! So glad you are a massive fan of X, too! I still need to pick up Alphabetland. Their first 4 albums are favorites of mine! I'm behind on the Raincoats, but thanks for the reminder that I need to investigate and sample them further! And I love that you also love Juliana. Yeah, she's been a longtime fan of X. What do you think of her recent covers albums of the Police and ONJ? I prefer her original material, but nice to see her nail these covers so well! Hope all is well and keep spinning the great tunes! Cheers!

@@TheOmahaIntrovert Hi Hanna. Thanks for your reply. It's really great to watch your videos as your ears are so open to many different types of music as your top 20 bands video showed. I haven't heard Juliana's later albums at all, just the first three solo records and the Lemonheads album. I too prefer originals. I like the odd cover on an album but generally don't buy albums of covers. I am a big Matthews Sweet fan and bought some of those Under the Covers releases, they were ok but I prefer his own songs. I will check these out however, they're on KZfaq music so I can try before I buy. Great you like The Church! Being an Aussie I grew up with The Church hearing songs from them right out of the gate with The Unguarded Moment in 1981 It did well here and had a lot of airplay. Great band and consistent. You may be interested in one of Australia's best kept secrets, The Underground Lovers. I think you'd love them. GB3 is a side project of The Underground Lovers and Steve Kilby from The Church collaborated on one album, Damaged/Controlled. The single, 'Nectarine' is wonderful. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sL95a7uTx9HNgGQ.html I highly recommend Dream it Down and Cold Feeling by The Underground Lovers - Genres covered: Dream Pop, Shoegaze, Indie Rock, Indie Pop, Alternative Dance, Indietronica. Apologies if you're already on to them but they are in my top five Australian bands of all time. The Go Betweens and The Triffids are great Aussie bands too. Glad you like The Go Betweens. Just listened to the ONJ covers album. Juliana does a great job and although I'm no fan of the originals I enjoyed her take on them. Immediately afterwards I listened to Bed which I think is fantastic. I hadn't heard it before and can see why you mentioned it in one of your videos. Great album. I particularly like Hatfield's guitar playing and tone and her thoughtful approach to the instrument really stands out. I kind of knew this but had forgotten how good she is; it really struck me with the two albums played today. Cheers.

Great taste you have there!! Curious if you’ve seen “Storefront Hitchcock”? Great stripped down video of him live in New York. Does a version of Glass Hotel that will blow your mind. Also, couldn’t agree with you more about REM. My fav album is probably Reckoning, but Murmur, Pageant and Fables are all great. Actually, I really love “Up” too, a highly underrated album. It was just after Bill Barry left the band and was a very deep, thought provoking record, including some of Stipe’s best lyrics. Fun fact, my first REM show, Robyn Hitchcock opened for them. That’s how I got turned onto him and also the DB’s. Peter Holsaple was playing with REM for the tour as an additional backing musician. Several years later the band I was in opened for Hitchcock at a small club in So-Cal. He was a very cool dude, chilled at the bar during our set, and was just as humorous in conversation as his his lyrics reflect. Really enjoyed this rundown!

Listening to your list - I was trying to think of who to recommend that you might also like. Obviously I don't know who you've heard overall and so some of these suggestions may be artists you're already familiar with - if so I apologize for those and just skip on past them. You mentioned you really like Dave Gahan's singing voice (I do too) and there's another guy who's voice isn't the same but who I would say might be in the same vicinity. His name is Brendan Perry from the band Dead Can Dance. If you've heard them already, do you agree that his voice is kinda similar? If you haven't heard them - I'm not sure how to describe their music. I guess you could say post-punk, but that has more to do with the time when they started as a band ('79-80) and I'd say only their first album and ep have a post-punky type sound. They were on the 4AD label - with the Cocteu Twins and Bauhaus and others and so maybe that kind of hints at their sound. But over time their sound morphed into I don't know what. There aren't many bands like them at all and so its hard to compare them. Regardless though, Perry's singing is kind of like Gahan's. He's sort of a crooner but not but Perry's vocals are just perfect for the band. If you haven't heard them and you like post-punky kind of Joy Division-ish but not really sort of music, check out their first album which is self-titled and the EP Garden of Arcane Delights. From the EP the song "In power we entrust the love advocated." Yes, its a mouthfull, but I think its a great song and it highlights his singing. If you want a more developed sound of theirs check out their subsequent albums Spleen and Ideal from 1985 (the song Enigma of the Absolute) and the next album Within the realm of a dying sun from 1987 (songs Anywhere out of this world and the instrumental Windfall are really great) and then later songs check out "Severance" (its one of their better known songs) from The Serpent's Egg and from the album Into the Labyrinth check out the song "The Carnival is over" (one of my favorites of theirs). The other primary band member is a woman named Lisa Gerrard and she and Perry split the vocal duties sort of. Sort of b/c she doesn't actually sing words - instead she vocalizes but in a more abstract way. Its really beautiful but its very different and it does provide a cool/interesting contrast to the songs that Perry sings on. Perry also has really great lyrics as well. So, DCD are a winning combination all around. (The name of the band supposedly coming from the fact that they use a lot of really old instruments - like medieval and ancient type instruments - and so these "dead" instruments and styles are being brought to life.) Again, they really are difficult to pin down stylistically, but I think you might like them if you haven't heard them. So, I went on way too long about that one band and so I'm going to be super brief about the others I mention. Check out Scott Walker's 1960's albums Scott 1 - 4. Since you said you really like the Who, if you haven't heard them check out the Small Faces (though I'm guessing you've probably heard them also), The Creation, The Move. You said you like Alt-Country, there is a 70's band that is kinda like that. Called the Flatlanders with a guy names Jimmie Dale Gilmore (I think that's his name) and they have some really great songs - check out the song "Dallas." Glenn Campbell's album By the Time I get to Phoenix is really great. The Charlie Rich song "San Francisco is a lonely town" (or at least his version if he didn't write it) is beyond great. A band that sort of pre-dates Alt-Country a bit but also is punk, the Meat Puppets (you've probably heard them already though). If you like weirder rock stuff check out Can and any of the "krautrock" (or their preference "kosmische musik," which I'm guessing is translated as cosmic music?) bands like Neu and Faust and/or Amon Duul and any Tangerine Dream album up through Phaedra. Ok - that's a lot, but you can skim over them and see if you like any of their stuff and you've probably heard a lot of them already, so its not quite as daunting as it looks here. Oooh ooh. Last one. Brilliant awesome wonderful female artist that gets overlooked now and absolutely shouldn't be - Kate Bush. And not just for Hounds of Love (which is a super amazing wonderful album) but for her later albums as well. There is a really neat documentary on her on YT - there's actually two, but the easier to find one is probably the best and it covers both her earlier years a la Wurthering Heights, but continues on down through The Sensual World('89) and The Red Shoes('93) and maybe to her 2000's albums - can't remember. But it does a good job of representing just how fascinating a person/artist/performer she is over the breadth of her musical career. So, if you haven't heard all of her stuff - check out the documentary and any of her albums you haven't already heard. Hounds of love is one of my favorite albums period, but she did so much more. Okie doke, that's it. Too much, but hopefully there is something in all of that you haven't already heard and will like. I love sharing music with people and that's why I rambled on so much here. Good hunting. (I haven't seen all your videos and so if you mentioned some of these in other vids I apologize again, didn't mean to be redundant and just to be clear, when I find new channels with interesting stuff I tend to sift my way through them and comment here and there. So I just didn't want my comments or views to come across as weird)

Hey there! I missed this comment earlier! You gave me a lot to chew on here! I do like DCD, but I only have Anastasis so far. I need to work my way backwards! I can't get into Kate Bush. I have tried. I love the Small Faces, the Creation, and the Move. I have LPs from them! Such great British Invasion tunes! Hope your week was a good one! Really appreciate your comments.

@@TheOmahaIntrovert If you liked Anastasis, of the two recent albums they have released it sounds the most like their older stuff, and so you would probably dig some of those older ones as well. I think I heard you mention you like Frank Sinatra also - depending on which Frank Sinatra you prefer: the "My Way" and "Strangers in the night" Sinatra or the "In the wee small hours," "Only the lonely" and the other moody albums he made. If you prefer the latter Sinatra (as I do, though I like some of his more upbeat songs, I'm definitely drawn more to the others) there is an oft overlooked album of his from 1969 called "Watertown" that I think is one of his best overall albums. Its a concept album and I'll acknowledge that its definitely a heart-tugger and might be too depressing, but I think most of it holds up as some of his very best work. Its hard to explain it but you can find the whole album on KZfaq to check out. If you're a fan of Sinatra's more moody oeuvre I think its a winner and worth at least one listen through. It's one you do want to listen all the way through though. And b/c I can't resist, one more recommendation. If you like country and/or folk at all, check out Lee Hazlewood's 1963 debut (I'm pretty sure) album "Trouble is a lonesome town." It is pretty short but I think it is absolutely brilliant. I really like the songs "Long black train" and "Son of a gun" and the following 3 tracks "we all make the flowers grow," "run boy run" and "six feet of chain" are funny/witty/great. You can find info about all the things I mentioned above on the Allmusic.com pages for the respective artists' albums (that's a really great resource site in general - that one and Discogs.com have been my 2 primary go-to sites for info on artist bios, albums, songs etc for years and years now.) Hope there is something among these that catches your interest. - happy hunting/listening.

Hi Hanna, love the start, this is my Top 20 so damit dont be a hater lol. Loved that. Nice job doing a video without new stuff. I had 19 of 20 of your bands. I am missing the db's but it is on my list to find. Peter Buck had a "jangly" guitar sound. I have most all of the stuff by REM but they came out when I was in my 20s. Harvest Moon was my first Young album. Frankly I was not a fan of his until I heard that album, it is one of my favorites. My kids also heard that one a lot lol. I have thought about videos of my top artists but man it changes constantly depending on my frame of mind. I really have a hard time committing. Talking Heads, Cramps, Jethro Tull, Miles Davis would be there but I have such varied taste. Very difficult to do. Glad you managed it. It is sad... but i know why we have to give a disclaimer like you gave at the start. We all know that everyone has their own opinions and that they should be respected and we should use it as a starting point for discussion... But there are so many knuckleheads out there that do not get that and we need to "remind" then to not be douche's! It is a sad world we live in! As I am writing this I am listening to the Beat Street soundtrack you gave me... It is soooo 80's old school! Love it! The one record you gave me that I got the best discovery of was the Judith by Judy Collins. I literally teared up listening to a few of the songs... So emotional and beautiful.
