Not really. In real life, America does have fallout shelters that were set up during the late 50s or early 60s by the Civil Defense. By and large, though, Citizens were encouraged to build their own fallout shelter so the government doesn't have to invest in it. But obviously, the government under Eisenhower would build the Whitespring Bunker and Raven Rock in the 50's in case of nuclear attack. I'm betting that in Metro's Universitie it was the same case. Which means Metro's America would be more lawless then Fallout's America.

I'm not sure if this is worth mentioning, but it's something you missed. During Exodus, while inside of the Kazakhstan satalite station, there was a recording talking about what they saw after the war. They could still see lights coming from American cities, so it seems to imply that at least shortly after the war, chunks of US infrastructure survived.

I don't think anyone's mentioned this, but the missiles seen launching from Moscow during last light probably aren't actually ICBM's, but part of the A135 ABM system designed to shoot down incoming ICBM's although even if so their launch seems to still have occurred quite late. Honestly Russia's seeming failure to get the bulk of its birds in the air during the final exchange always seemed a pretty odd part of the lore.

At the 3:44 mark you can actually see the missile fired by that submarine in the Arabian Sea landing in Dagestan, meaning it struck Russia. That would presumably be what set of the End War, with America launching a full strike afterwards presumably because they assumed Russia would have done it first otherwise.
@anvos658
@anvos658 11 ай бұрын
That is honestly a decent argument for the sub being a 3rd party actor who nuked part of Russia to force the US and Russia to make split second decisions to launch or risk a full arsenal exchange on both sides, and the US opted for there is no way Russia won't blame us, and took the initiative.
@13gan
@13gan 11 ай бұрын
@@anvos658There's also the possibility of rogue actors and spies within the government of Russia and US launching the nukes and/or doing sabotage. Russia's failure to launch their nukes before the US might also due to ongoing diplomatic actions that were taken to stop full out nuclear war. I mean, Russia would have detected the US launch and plotted it's trajectory so the only question is why didn't they launch theirs in retaliation until US's nuke had crossed their airspace/literally detonated on their cities. So the sequence of events might be: 1) nukes we launched in the middle east 2) Both governments go into panic mode and start calling each other on what happen and what to do 3) Somehow, someone in US launches nukes to Russia which when detected, cause Russia to put their Army on standby until further confirmation 4) Panic in other world government 5) US communicated to Russia that the launch was a mistake and that they're trying to disarm/intercept the launched nukes (while probably under internal attack by rogue actors/spies) 6) Russia's government got paralyzed either due to sabotage, rogue actors or bio attack 7) By the time the nukes cross their airspace and assuming the chain of command in Russia has been restored, it's already too late so they launch their own nukes Not saying there's a hidden group operating behind the scene like Hydra but it's possible that in the chaos, the espionage assets of both countries were mobilised in an effort to gain further information on what really happened and along the way, cause an escalation in misunderstanding and sabotage action.

I've Always Liked the idea that America in the Metro Universe has had its Government and Military survive along with Several Major Cities and major chunks of land surrounding them but with Significant areas lost to lawlessness and outright nuclear annihilation. The Cities and other major bastions of civilization are dirty looking like in Children of Men or perhaps Gears of War, are heavily fortified and either feature heavily militarized police or outright martial law in order to fend of major swarms of Mutant Creatures or Lawless Marauders in addition to maintaining Law and Order. Significant chunks of territory in areas like the American Sowthwest and in or around destroyed cities are either outright lawless, have frontier like presence or are quarantined behind heavy military fortifications. Gangs of Marauders exist in many locations neccecitating people being heavily armed to have a semblance of safety outside of "Green Zones" and Mexico is Overrun by Bandit empires that are the descendants of the Cartels that occasionally attempt raids or full-blown conquest northwards.

I think that's actually fairly plausible, the one bit I would add is the potential of 3rd party groups (state governments, rogue military assets, religions groups) taking over and forming legitimate nation-states or warlord-states in some areas of the country. For example, the LDS church forming a new nation in Utah and the western Rockies, the State of Texas surviving mostly intact and doing ok, or a few divisions of the US army setting up a new military clique in Kentucky or something. Russia's late response might have been caused by the way its command structure works in the context of nuclear weapons, while the president can order a strike it is up to the individual generals to authorize the launch and then in some cases it even comes down to the individual missile crews. People might have been caught off guard by the US launching its arsenal and some might have thought it was a radar issue (which happened once back in the cold war) and that might have caused them to be reluctant to fire until the nukes got so close to Russia.

What angers me is when people keep talking about first striking will win the war before the USSR or Russia could react back. This often now popping up very often due to the recent politics around Ukraine. To be honest with you this type of talk scares me, because it means some people don't want a nuclear or don't see the true danger in one beginning. They seem to be under some very fatal illusions like: Somehow shooting down all the Missiles, or magically all of Russia's will not work or fire. Or worse of all A US/NATO first strike will somehow eliminate the Russian threat of nukes before launch, be it this first strike be either aircraft and missile attacks or a nuclear strike. I think too many people are not aware of how Nuclear war would actually happen. We have some people who literally say the USA should just bomb or fire missiles at Russian nuclear assets to prevent them firing nukes, during the Ukraine war. None of these people understand that if you fire on a Nation's nuclear assets they will interpret that as a prelude attack on their nuclear capabilities , just before your main nuclear attack.

During the cold war there was an incident during Able Archer '83 I believe, where NATO held exercises close to the East German border including nuclear drills, that a Soviet missile detection installation detected what appeared to be several launches fitting the profile of ICBM's heading towards the USSR. Fortunately the officer in charge of the station had a cool enough of a head to not kick it up any further and addressed the problem after the incident to improve the warning system because thankfully in this case it wasn't nukes, it was something stupid like glint from high altitude weather balloons. I'm thinking this was maybe the case with Russia. Why would Russia just begin outright nuking the US? Why would the US out of seemingly nowhere nuke Russia? Able Archer was a different incident than the false launch indication. The former was in Soviet times…Andropov and his minions got the idea the exercise was a cover for a real attack, and refused to believe their spies who told them it was nonsense. Reagan was on a State visit to South Korea at the time, there is no way he’d be that far from CONUS if a first strike was even being contemplated. The false alarm was post Soviet, when Yeltsin was President. The Norwegians launched a science experiment and the Russians mistook it for a missile, even though they were notified the launch was taking place well before.

Definitely with a US using the first strike option. If Soviet middle defenses aren’t put up in time or some of them unfortunately don’t work it, then it would explain why the Soviet Unions retaliation was far less grand considering the US doctrine targets strategic assets predominantly other known nuclear silos and places of government power. Those areas don't really have any strategic assets like nukes sitting about in silos, though it would make sense given their proximity to Siberia and the like. But the only places of note in those western regions of the state are Nome and Bethel with native villages dotted about nearby. Most of the population, resources, industry, infrastructure, food production, processing, is in the south central areas and the interior. Almost none of those locations are touched at all. The pipeline is still intact, as is more or less all of the power generation systems, and the means to distribute it. All of the food industries, such as the farm land near Delta Junction, as well as all over the state, are still intact. The fishing industry, which is the biggest in the world, is also intact, as is the processing plants needed to cut, clean, can, and distribute them. Our mining industry can make up for the loss from the continental US in all but certain rare earth metals. Lumber and the like, we got more than we need. Plus we still have 90+% of the population. So Alaska is fairly well off despite everything. Mutants would likely be the only real issue I see for my home state.

As an Alaskan can confirm the locations aren't really strategic, if we were to be nuked it would've been JBER/Anchorage itself and Eilson. Other than that it could be the ground based interceptors but I'm not sure as to where they are located. I've only lived in Anchorage after all.

during the Cold War the only major targets up here were the DEW line C&C, Anchorage, Fairbanks, and a few low KT yield tacticals aimed at airbases and such north of the Brooks Range. But considering the people making the game likely know little about Alaska or our population dispersion (hell, had three tourists over the past week ask if they could call the US from here, thinking Alaska was a foreign country) it's not surprising that they would have the targets in weird places

Russia/USSR gets nuked by America Basically, similar to the premise of Wasteland which iirc, the nuclear war in Wasteland was caused by America misidentifying a Meteor for an ICBM and in a panic launched their nukes at the USSR. However, I havent played any of these games for a while so I could be completely wrong. However, it seems to me that America in Metro is just America in Wasteland. The only difference between the universes are: Russia/USSR is instead just the modern day Russian Federation iirc and the nuclear holocaust was started similarly to how the nukes were dropped in Mad Max, with the main cause being another war over oil in the middle east.

I think, if we go with the trailer video showing the launches the war could have been started by a incorrect identification. The tech at the time was pretty prone to malfunctioning and with the added stress of a couple nukes in the air I think the US might have thought the Arabian Sea launch was by a Soviet ship/silo of some kind, immediately trigger a US response but catching the Russians on the back foot.

Citizens are almost secondary completely they would have had the same reaction as the russians did trying to rush to safety and if we are talking about russian ICBM'S they carry like minitature warheads if you going from reality thats a lot of nukes for one icbm to launch in 1 volley since its 50 peices or so, very hard to shoot down even with patriots. But it is game lore so the government could have survived but many civillain infrastructures must be destroyed as you seen with that golden state bridge which is part of larges cities so many cities had to be targeted. Realisticly not even talking about the nuclear winter and the lack of many grains that can't be growned outside now. So alot becomes more like russia in metro with different factions, perhaps even cartel being around now more or so would not be suprising. However its strange in metro that china does nothing I guess we need more information.

I think they're going to be exploring that soon, the Sam's Story dlc from Exodus leads me to think America would be in decent shape, at least in comparison to Russia. I'm sure some of the large cities are screwed and a lot of the Midwest would be a wasteland and turn back into a dead seabed, but we have a lot of nooks and crannies around the country where people would survive. I would like to see an irradiated grizzly face off against a mutant moose though. Assuming we travel east from Russia it's likely Alaska would be a key area in something like that. But I think something is lost every time the wall of knowledge moves back in the Metro series. Is this the kind of nuclear apocalypse where everyone, everywhere got hit equally? Were the nukes and WMDs mainly targeted at military bases, population centers, ports? Could Russia and America combined really cripple the whole world like that? Where's China? What happened to Europe? Did Africa get clapped too? These questions stay unanswered not only because the characters don't have the means to know, but also because it raises some bigger problems. Like, enough nukes to put most if not all of the countries on earth back to the level of civilization that we see in the games and books would be enough for complete biosphere collapse.

Given how metro has often lots of symbolism and allegory's in it, it just feels like something that could be possible in universe as part of that given how USA, Europe, China, USSR and latter Russia always have their hands in south American and Africa the idea of them destroying them selves and the south prospering as a result while leaving the the northern hemisphere to eat each other in chaos would feel somewhat poetic.

One aspect of the USSR that only came to light after the Iron Curtain fell was how poor the readiness of Silo-based ICBMs were in the USSR. Their medium range missiles on subs or launchers were deadly, but the huge ones meant to strike the USA itself were known to be... troublesome to get working. I could totally believe that the reason we see the ICBMs launching from Moscow seconds before the incoming bombs hit was because they were not capable of being fired at a moment's notice. Just as likely most never got ready before getting destroyed, sparing the USA from a full nuclear response. Edit: That also would explain why tank commanders in city could have known Nuclear missiles were inbound and were evacuating before their own could be launched. You can imagine a panicking missile crew having to scramble to get their missiles to launch before it is too late.

From what the promo video shows, the following US cities and places got hit: 1. New York City 2. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; possibly Fort Dix, New Jersey 3. Washington, D.C., with the additional targets of Baltimore, Maryland, and Newport News, Virginia 4. Charleston, South Carolina 5. Atlanta, Georgia 6. Miami, Florida, or possibly Patrick Air Force Base, Florida 7. San Diego, California 8. Pearl Harbor, Hawaii 9. Seattle, Washington For the graphic novel, here is what I can discern: First, the line from the ocean to the middle of Nebraska. This indicates a naval presence in contact with Offutt Field, what was the old Strategic Air Command (SAC) during the Cold War. Incidentally, there was the prediction that if nukes were launched by the USSR, Offutt Field would be hit by at least 3 100-kiloton bombs. Next, the triangle. This would seem to be more of a zone of control or avoidance area, possibly controlled by remnants of the US government located in Denver, Colorado; Fort Collins, Colorado; and Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado. If Cheyenne Mountain survived, that's where NORAD would be. Arizona: Actually not Arizona, but rather an airbase in Arizona. My guess? Edwards AFB, located in Arizona and New Mexico. California: May be an indication of San Francisco surviving, and basically being the only outpost between LA and the ruins of Seattle, along the I-5 Corridor.

I live in California, and id comfortably say we would become a massive crater, I live a stone throw for major military bases, industrial centers, ports, airports, and other not just strategic areas, but logistical important spaces. and this is just by el Segundo or Hawthorne, the ports of Los Angeles in san Pedro is the largest port in the country. Besides a few mountains east to us, its mostly flat land so we have hardly any environmental protection from a single nuke in one area, let alone a dozen. Id also argue there would also be little left of san Francisco but I don't live there and know as much as I do here.

Would like to point out something in regards to your yamahtua vs raven rock comparison. Raven Rock is called Raven Rock and not "Mount Raven" because it's a solid piece of Greenstone granite. Which adds tons more survivability than a couple thousand meters of dirt.

Best guess would be Israel and Iran, due to the different religious and social climates, plus the fact it doesn't really make sense that Israel would be attacked by Iraq since Iraq was and is under U.S. control atleast in our universe which kinda mirrors Metro's. Also, Israel and Iran hate eachother mainly over political, religious and social beliefs.

In the metro 2033 book there is a chapter where an radio operator is talking to Artem(main character). There they say that some nuclear submarines and even an tank outpost survived outside(not for long). The book says that the tank camp could survive becouse the soldiers manning the tank got lucky and got an new radiation protected vehicle, witch they take on a long jurney out of population centers, where the book says that radiation is low enough to allow people to survive. This means that some parts of canada are probably still populated.

The best I can tell from left to right with the dots on the map at 8:14 are around South Lake Utah, Phoenix AZ, (the Triangle has) Santa Fe NM, Fort Worth TX, and maybe around the Boiling Springs State Park in OK, the upper one is around Big Springs NE, and the last one is off the Coast of NC right next to Camp Lejeune. Makes senses given all of them are close to water, mountains, or a Military base.

This is a fun video to hypothesize. From what I understand about the difference between US and Russian nuclear command structure, in the US, once the President gives the order to fire, it's pretty much a done deal, in Russia, there are Generals that are given the order from the Kremlin, so there's probably a degree of hesitancy and/or order confirmation that takes time in the Russian system. Another thing to note is that this looks like a limited exchange, none of the Dakota silos fired off their missiles. Also, in the US if we fire off the nukes, as much of the government is evacuated to a secure site (probably Cheyenne Mountain), given the lateness of the Russian response, I would say there's a fair chance that most, if not all, of the government was evacuated from DC, while the Russians were caught with their pants down. Again going off the nuke map, the entirety of the east coast and southern California coast, along with Seattle, are wiped off the map. Though San Francisco (from what we see in the DLC) is still intact enough. For the time being this would isolate the US from trade, but after the dust settles it would appear that many of the major cities in the midwest and Texas remain untouched. Given enough time, the US would rebuild much of it's infrastructure and survive. It's unclear as to whether martial law would be declared in these cities, but I would say that the middle east got the worst of it and America would come out the "winner' if you could call it winning.

It seems to track in my head cannon that it would start in the middle east. I have two ways of thinking about the metro lore (I didn't get very far in the audio books but I've loved the games) that metro is just the Russian side of fallout, or that metro goes pretty similar to our own reality that only differs when the bombs drop in 2013. Having it start in the middle east would surely have the Americans fire first cuz there was still significant us presence in the region. In the ensuing chaos they hit the button. Even with minimal nuclear strikes, it wouldn't take much to have the US devolve along party lines.

The offshore strike does bring up questions maybe the U.S. was given bad intel about who launched it and that's why they did a first strike that caught Russia off guard.
@Mercer2024
@Mercer2024 11 ай бұрын
Technically, the first strike wouldve been the biological weapons they deployed to kill off Russian leadership. They did this so that, as a first strike, the Russian Federation would be too slow to gather its forces and retaliate with nuclear weapons. While the Russians were scrambling to launch their nukes, the U.S. had already launched while the Russians were too slow to retaliate, leading to many of their missile silos being blown to hell and only so many nukes being launched. So there are two ways to strike, a countervalue strike or a counterforce strike. It seems in the Metro Universe, America chose catastrophe rather than tactical. Meaning, they chose to kill millions of civilians -- which would be vilified upon -- rather than tactically striking all of Russia's silos. Countervalue is the act of basically genociding civilians with any weapon whether its nuclear, biological or chemical. Counterforce is strictly attacking only military targets.

Not only would the user have to be on at the same time, they would have to be on the same frequency, AND be able to be able to transmit the distance to Moscow. It really more says that there was a lot more survivors than most think if the one specific frequency, at that specific time, that are capable of transmitting that distance, and any other number of factors, are being seen.

Exodus needed to have some remnant US forces that set up in their bases and could’ve had a twist where the war is still going on or that the rest of the world is fine, like the scene where they discovered that long range transmissions still come in could’ve had more to it.

one thing that always made me think in this universe is since its not in the same level as fallouts great war, what could have happened to the areas unaffected like central and south america, of course the fallout and radiation from the north would cause a bunch of damage but thye could reform and keep a sense of normalcy, since a lot of those areas are rich in antural resources
@kadarak1

Probably they would fall into chaos and anarchy and start war over resources and survival. With big players either out of picture or crippled there would be no world economy, no contracts or deals, no help etc. Survival of the fittest.

So... what I got was: Iran and Israel started exchanging nukes, an American ballistic missile submarine gets involved to help Israel but one of its missiles accidentally overshoots its target and hits Soviet territory. The American government then panics about the potential Soviet response and pulls the trigger in order to prevent the (to them) inevitable retaliation from causing too much damage.

I'm pretty sure the first exchange depicted would be Iran, who has a strategic military alliance with Russia, launching on Israel. Israel having a strategic military alliance with the USA. As current events have shown us a good ol uncle Sam has deployed not just one but two carrier groups to the region. Even if the USA doesn't have any alliance that would entail a nuclear response for hitting Israel, I'd bet they'd still do it anyway.
