This physics video tutorial provides a basic introduction into ammeters and voltmeters. Ammeters measure the electric current flowing in a circuit in amps and voltmeters measure the voltage across an element in volts. To use an ammeter, you should connect it in series with the circuit since the internal resistance of an ammeter is very close to zero. To use a voltmeter, you should connect it in parallel to the element or device of which you wish to measure the voltage across. Voltmeters have an internal resistance that is very high ideally near to infinity. This video contains examples and practice problems of calculating the shunt resistance needed to convert a galvanometer into an ammeter and into a voltmeter.

Thank you, very accurate and straight to the point with no detail spared. I looked at a few university websites before watching your video and they managed to twist and mess up the information so much that I ended up more confused than before, and I was just trying to refresh my mind not even learn it for the first time. Keep up the great work!

I’m not sure if my textbook is outdated but in it says that the ammeter is attached parallel to the galvanometer and that the voltmeter is attached in series with it so I’m now even more confused

in an ammeter, The shunt resistor is parallel to the galvanometer. while in a voltmeter, the multiplier resistor is connected in series in the galvanometer.

Your book isn't outdated.. it has got some typing errors... In an ammeter, Shunt is connected in parallel with the galvanometer(not ammeter connected across galvanometer as your book puts it)....Similarly, in a voltmeter, shunt in connected in parallel with galvanometer (not voltmeter in series with galvanometer)

@vainfate6275
@vainfate6275 5 жыл бұрын
krish Anu when you’re using an Ammeter to measure current, you DONT want the measuring device to alter the current, hence little to no resistance. (Zero resistance in series)
