Pro-tip: I always tell people starting out homesteading on youtube who get to the cement mixing stage to use a Garden Hoe to mix when using a wheel barrow. The angle of the blade allows for the right weight for mixing the cement with rocks and water together sooooo much easier than a traditional shovel. Every new homesteader who's taken my advice can't thank me enough and have replied back to me. It's worth the purchase. When you start doing side walks at 4x4 blocks at a time, you'll be glad you had one to mix with, and you'll mix faster. Bonus Pro-tip: When you get to the 4x4 walk way block stage, buy Pea-rock as a base, only needs to be thinly spread where the ground is just barely visible but mostly covered, and you won't need to buy expensive rebar. The pea-rock is round and acts like a roman arch on the underside and the cement won't crack if it's 3 inches thick or thicker. If you don't use pea-rock, it will crack without rebar. Pea-rock is far cheaper than rebar.

Also, pouring a thin amount of water over your work 6 hours after setting, will make it cure slower, but become harder. Slow cure = more hardness, less brittle. And a rectangular Trowel with round edges is good for when you get to the sidewalk for smoothing surfaces. Screeting won't be needed with a wood block if you have a trowel. When you first start to use it you'll understand what it feels like and may be hard to get all the lines out at first, that will take practice, but it will be good enough and look great.

Well done. I bet you wish you had a trailer as well as the Ranger. The outdoor kitchen is looking good so far. A tip re: rats un the shower building - stuff any gaps with steel wool. They aren't supposed to like chewing on it and might help keep them out. Otherwise just keep setting traps.....

Laura & Dan, hello you sweet and lovely couple! I loved the video! The blessings of the fruits and future harvests warmed my heart. What a joyous feeling seeing your hard work produce so much. I totally agree with what Dan said about buying machinery for the home. The concrete slab looks great and like the way it turned out. The troll hunt was way to funny. Beware the trolls. (Dramatic music plays). Just love 'em and pray for 'em. Your sweet souls going to help your friends was epic. What a loving servanthood and living out God's grace. I cannot express in words the joy and peace I get from watching your videos. Your smiles, laughter, real talks, and truly doing the Lord's work is inspiring and healing. Lovely, lovely souls. I am so happy I was blessed to find you. I pray for your perseverance, great discernment, strength, peace, and joy. I pray your love for one another is like Christ's love for us: Strong, never ending, and long suffering. So much love to you both, so much! God bless you mightily! Colossians 3:23-24 NKJV "And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ." 2 Timothy 2:6-7 NKJV "The hardworking farmer must be first to partake of the crops. Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you understanding in all things. The next sunset you share please say a prayer for me for guidance from our Lord. :-)

Evening Dan & Laura, you did well for a first time concrete mixing and laying a pad. Its not easy work especially when getting up that early! Dont take any notice from the trolls. I was expecting to see your friend in the outhouse clearing the way for you hahaha What a nice gesture and surprise for your friends upon their return to see all the grass cut for them, as you said working together helps make for an easier way of life separate and it would eventually wear people down. Your good friends to have. Till next week. Xx

Hello, you two. I am glad that seeing your land when you 1st got back ( couple of episodes back) didn't make you quit. So the work on the outdoor kitchen has started in earnest. Great stuff. I like the idea of the old man goals. Seeing yourselves old on your land,is what ideally want, cause then you will be Portugeese residents, with the barn having been lived in for years. Your farm would not only be bearing fruit but you will have yohr veggies growing. Who knows you could be giving food to another young couple who had just bought land and had the same dreams as yourself. Oh yes Dan and by then you would be fluent in the lingo.😅 Anyway back to present day, Laura what was that courgette thing you made, fancy sharing the recipe please?. Nice of you to cut back and look after your friends property. Good to pay things forward. The music this week was particularly good. I look forward to next weeks ( in reality cause i am so late watching it will be tomorrow). It will be a welcome distraction as having my knee replaced on Thursday morning. Anyway time for me to head into the shower (rat free) x

Hi you lovely two, great to see all the progress and moving forward. I so so hope you will get your visa's!! Little tip here from me about the concrete. A base like that should be at least 10 to 15cm thick and reinforced with a rebar framing to prevent braking or cracking, otherwise great job. 🙏🏻

I am thinking Laura did a heck of a job leveling out the cement with a sand shovel. I think it would be helpful if you had proper tools and a sand shovel is not usually used to level cement. Also, the cement looked very thick and that makes it harder to scread, or another word for leveling it out. I actually thought that you got lucky had had not put stakes to hold the form in place and very lucky that it did stay in shape, because those 4 stones placed to do the job would hardly do the job if the cement was deeper and larger in size. Some times hard work and a lot of luck gets us through the project, but I dont think I would count on it every time. You two are fun to watch and of course hoping you do well.

💙 💙 💙 You're doing a great job but it's easier to smooth concrete if you make your leveling stick long enough to rest on the form boards each side. Then I tap on the form boards with a hammer to jiggle out bubbles that will weaken the slab and helps the mix self-level. Cheers!

Awesome video guys! Good to see you working on your dream 😀 You know the world is full of wonderfull helpfull people, allot of keyboardwarriors too. Dont let it get to you at all. I am sure allot of people are commenting trying to be helpfull but since its the internet they word it totally un-personal. Meaning they come over in a very negative way and obviously they can be, but im sure "in person"they would word it very different and maybe even help in manual labout. (obviously they arent there and wont be but you get my drift). Just keep on doing what you are doing, life is precious and all about learning.

Rat/Mice issue: I just watched a video about ridding your dwelling of rats & mice. 1) Using a cheep container with a top lid 2) cut a hole in the side approx 1 inch diameter 3) Mix equal parts of baking soda & dry corn muffin mix together in the container (4 rounded tablespoons). If you can find cornbread mix with honey, that's better. 5) leave it where you find rat/mouse poop. Why it works, rats/mice can not burp or fart! So they eat it, go back to their nest & die because it expands in their gut which has stomach acid. The baking soda is what kills them. The corn meal is the attractant. Zero harm to other critters. It's not poison, and it's cheep!

Thanks for the tips! We have seen that method before, we just don't like the idea of the rats dying inside the walls/ roof. we're going to try remove the cladding on the walls first where the tend to nest/hide and then if that still doesn't work we might have to use that method. Thanks for tuning in 🌻

Hi guys I really don't want to shoot you down, but your concrete base has a good chance of cracking you should have put re-enforcing mesh at the bottom, or you could have used a type of fibreglass petals mixed in the concrete. well, fingers crossed good luck.

In Spain they always used to do a little Siesta in the afternoon. After the work and activities in the morning. I guess they also do that in Portugal. It makes sense during the hottest time of the day.
