I am Japanese 日本人です We celebrate 2 wins for the first time in 15 years (since "Departures" and "The House of Small Cubes" in 2008) Most of you must be wondering why "Godzilla Minus One" was not the Japanese submition of International film. "Godzilla Minus One" was not that successful in Japan for a Godzilla film, and director Takashi Yamazaki is like Japanese Michael Bay, who started his career as a VFX guy. On the other hand, everyone thought famous Wim Wender's film was more Oscar-like especially after it won Cannes for the best actor. This is why it was a huge surprise that "Godzilla Minus One" was very successful both commercially and critically overseas. At Japanese Academy awards of the last week, which nobody even in Japan cares, "Godzilla" sweeped 8 categories including the best picture, while "Perfect Days" got 2 wins for the best director and best actor. But it was of course too late for the Oscar international film. In Japan, every one predicted "Godzilla" and "The Boy and the Heron" win Producer Toshio Suzuki just revealed at a press conference that even though Hayao Miyazaki was pretending he did not care about the awards, he was waiting at his atelier the good news, Ghibli staff was watching the show and started to clap as soon as they heard the "The" of "The Boy and the Heron", And Suzuki ordered 3 Oscar statue for himself, Miyazaki, and to show off. Also, everyone, do not forget that today is March 11th, 13 years after the Great East Japan Earthquake.

@@purekinema The most controvertial thing was "Barbemheimer" meme, where Barbie's hair looks like a mashrume cloud of atomic bombs. "Oppenheimer" will be seen since the end of March in Japan. Many people want to see it. Christopher Nolan is popular in Japan. When a Japanese IMAX theater screened "TENET" during COVID, Nolan sent his handwritten letter to the theater to show his gratitude. The reason why "Oppenheimer" was not premiered last summer was because it would hit August 6th and 9th, the days 2 bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Although some may concern that Japanese people are not depicted in the film, it will be successful for sure.

The take that Spider-Verse lost because the Academy dislikes comic-book films doesn't resonate - the first one won the category! This came down to the increased international presence and influence of the Oscar voting body, as also evidenced by Anatomy of a Fall winning screenplay, Zone of Interest winning sound, and Godzilla winning VFX. Who wouldn't want to take another opportunity to recognize Miyazaki?
@VikingMatt8795 ай бұрын
Good point. I've been calling the win for The Boy And The Heron since I saw the movie back in December. It is just a flat out better movie than Spider-Verse. Glitz and flash and colors and pop and Whams and Bhams and fireworks can only get you so far.
@ClassicalMusic20025 ай бұрын
I think it’s a combination of a lot of factors: Spider-verse was six months old when Boy and the Heron came out, the controversy over the summer about how poor the working conditions were for the animators on the film, and the fact that this is the middle film in a trilogy all hurt its chances here. Boy and the Heron came out at the right time, was considered by many people to be Miyazaki’s best since Spirited Away, and was incredibly popular with the international voting body. Not to mention it opened at #1 in the US box office in December!

@@ClassicalMusic2002I agree. Spider verse will win for the final film as it will actually have a proper ending that won't end on a cliffhanger. Besides, they've pretty much won everything anyway. They might nominate beyond the spider versus more categories depending on what happens. Thanks to the boy and the heron, animation is now recognized as more than just a genre. It's an art form, it is storytelling. This will allow beyond the spider verse to thrive as the academy is now more accepting and that animation will mean more to them in the future. Also, The Academy could give Phil Lorde and Chris Miller or even Kemp Powers and honorary Oscar later on for their contribution to the animation industry, paving the way and changing animation forever. This was a well-deserved win for Ghibli and a proper send off for Miyazaki if it truly is his last film.

I actually think Spider-Verse feeling like an incomplete film probably hurt it, as well as them already having given it to the first one and the fact that there's a third one coming. For the record, my pick for Animated Feature was actually Robot Dreams (which is a gorgeous meditation on friendship and battling loneliness), and while I am in awe of the animation in the second Spider-Verse film, and still love the characters and the humor, the cliffhanger was a sticking point for me, as it told me I shouldn't judge it as a complete story (there are other films with cliffhangers that feel like full narratives, this one did not).

@TheOscarExpert: The boy and the Heron had a complete narrative. It also had a stronger narrative surrounding it regarding its animation process. Spider-Verse lacked a proper conclusion and suffered from being the middle entry in a trilogy. This isn't any issue as the film has already won so much with fans, critics, animation awards and has won a total of 97 awards. The original one in Oscar which is enough to cement this franchise as oscar-winning. The creators of these films are going to walk away with a special honorary. Oscar for their contribution to changing the animation industry forever somewhere down the line. Besides, the creators of this film will be awarded for beyond the spider verse when that comes out. Boy and the heron has opened incredible doors to animation in general. The academy has now accepted that animation is an art form and not just a genre. It is filmmaking. It is storytelling and they fully recognize that. Is a proper send-off for Studio Ghibli if this is his final film. That's the case, he'd have walked away with three Oscars total. That's an incredible achievement and a proper send off to a legendary filmmaker. Well deserved

Honestly, once the dust is settled, we all will remember these Oscars as the "Ones who could have been done by e-mail." Everyone who was tipped as the winner, won and even in the tight races (like Actress), it was one of the two hot favourites. Most surprises came from the nominations (Cough Robbie and Gerwig out Cough) and some late comers to the race like American Fiction and Godzilla Minus One, but it was mostly what you and other experts said. Now, let's start speculating about next year's tech war between Dune and Wicked...

Please mention in your next video the following; on one ABC pre Oscar segment, one of the movie reporters went out of the way to remind (or tell viewers for the first time) that if a nominee (Lilli Gladstone) gets less than 50% of the vote, even tho the nominee has the MOST VOTES (and you would think would be the winner), the actual winner is the nominee (Stone) mentioned HIGHEST #2 on all ballots.

My favorite win of the night was for Cord Jefferson. American Fiction barily had a month to finish filming the movie, it barily had a 10 million dollar budget. Despite all it's challenges, it still won the People's Choice award at the Telluride Festival. It also wins every precursor imaginable : Critic's Choice, Bafta, Independent Spirit, Scripter awards. Hence, I was confused as to why people thought Oppenheimer was going to win in this category ( and Barbie never stood a chance at winning). Cord Jefferson also had one of the most important and best speeches of the evening. I really hope it inspired upcoming filmmakers and screenwriters 🙏🏽

One thing to consider: how much did the voting period for the Oscars starting before SAG affect voting? Like how many voters filled in their ballots right away before those winners (particularly Gladstone) were announced?
@friendlypup56505 ай бұрын
Was Emma Stone really winning by that much pre sag? To the point where it would be enough to overcome a Gladstone shift? I don’t buy it. Sag is 160k voters, academy is less than 10k, with 12% being actors. And 30% being international

These set of winners confirm what I have suspected all along: The winners are determined by the final voting dates. Last year, the voting for final winners began AFTER SAG (which is why they agreed last year), while this year the voting occurred one week earlier (right after BAFTA) with SAG being in-between.

Right now in Japan, Emma ignoring Michelle, RDJ ignoring Ke is viral. Now X is all about racism (mainly about micro aggression), more than Godzilla and the Boy and the Heron. Today, Jennifer , Emma, and RDJ lost their popularity while Sally Field are praised even though few people knew her. I really don't understand why they did not look at Michelle and Ke who has an Oscar in the first place. Even if not racisim, it is just unbelievably rude.

Well I am one of the VERY few who wanted Giamatti to win over Cillian Murphy. While I thought Cillian did well, I think this Giamatti best role and he sells that character incredibly well. Maybe it's because Holdovers was my favorite movie of the nominees but I just loved his snark, vulnerability and commitment. Heck I even enjoyed Jeffrey Wright more than Cillian but that's just me.

I think Spider-verse did get a lot of love, but a few things hurt it for taking the gold, those being: - a release in June, which eventually its hype died down - being a part one of a sequel, a lot of people hated that - the allegations about the poor working conditiona of the animators The Boy and the Heron not only came out right on time for fall festivals and a December release, it also helped that: - Its win in Best Animated Film at the BAFTAs and Golden Globes were known and seen by many people, including Oscar voters. Even though neither producer or director of the film was there to take the award, the moment was there. Spider-verse only televised win was through Critics Choice and it was barely mentioned through the commercials, creating almost no hype. - The film broke box office records for a Ghibli, hand drawn, anime and PG-13 film. An anime doesn't make 46 million just like that, so it was very popular - GKIDS right campaigning with the English dub and also it's widest release helped. - This being Miyazaki's most likely last film, as there are many explanations and similitudes to his personal life in the film, might have compelled voters to vote for it - The film was a lot more popular with international bodies, even many international websites were predicting it to win. The Boy and the Heron taking the Oscar is historic and important on its own. A first time win for an adult animated film, and a long overdue one for another hand drawn film and international title. It had almost every stat and chance against it and it still prevailed, I love this win!
@thewackness955 ай бұрын
I agree with the spiderverse points against it and boy and the heron coming out in the right time but: -Both suzume and the first slam dunk did better box office Ghibli isn't the only animation studio. -Miyazaki is working on another project, so the narrative that this is his last one could have played a big factor in it winning but is a false narrative. -The film is no more adult than last years Pinocchio, so I do not get that "adult animation" line.
@MundoJuanci5 ай бұрын
@@thewackness95 Counterpoints: - Suzume and The First Slam Dunk did extremely well in Japan, but not in USA (Side note, in no world they would recognize Shinkai/First Slam Dunk over Miyazaki, who had been a three time nominee) - Of course Ghibli isn't the only animation studio, but the return of Ghibli made a lot of waves. It's also one of the few well known animation studios that isn't in USA - Probably a false narrative, but also contribute the fact that Miyazaki is 83 years old. How much longer is he going to live? Of course he could make another film, but it takes a long time and this is considered his last film by many because of the similarities with his own life and it's ending - GDT Pinocchio is dark, sure, but it's still PG like most winners in the category. Even Netflix labels Pinocchio as a "kids movie" even thought it's not. The Boy and the Heron, on the other hand, is rated PG-13, and was the first animated film to win the Oscar with that rating.
@thewackness955 ай бұрын
@MundoJuanci Miyazaki is a legend, but your name shouldn't automatically get you the award. It's that backwards thinking that causes things like only one non-ghibli anime ever being nominated. Animation deserves better than here's a legacy award, especially when he has a legacy award. Also, suzume is a better animated film, across spiderverse and tnmt are better creative films when it comes to the medium, and I just like nimona, more so if he does make another film, hopefully ppl judge it on its own merits not on the name on the poster.
