Eddie Redmayne for the “The Theory of Everything” is underrated as hell. People go on and on about how Michael Keaton should’ve won this year. But I don’t agree with that at all tbh. It baffles me how this win is seen as underserved.

the academy HATES Gyllenhaal. IDK why or what he did, but man has been acting his ass off for years and never got a nom after Brokeback Mountain. they just seem to have some un favourites who always do great work like Amy Adams, it's definitely to some extent a popularity contest (not to say Eddie didn't do great he was wonderful in that film as I recall.)

Brian, you are so right saying the 2010s winners don’t really age well. Really hate the fact that originals like Chiwetel Edjiofor and Michael Keaton lost to Oscar-safe, awards-baity transformation boredom. Just see how Arrival’s Amy Adams not even nominated but she got in for playing Lynne Cheney🙄

Jean Dujardin went back to France after his win because he's a french actor and he wanted to make french movies, even The Artist is technically a french movie, he hasn't "fallen off the map" he's still making movies just not in your country. to be honest i think it's kind of stupid to only assume you have a career in cinema if you're making movies in the US, i'm sorry man i like you but this doesn't sit right with me, there are plenty of amazing movies outside of the US that aren't being nominated to the oscars that you should probably pay a bit more attention to. if you want more movies JD has starred in i'd suggest you to watch those: -Deerskin -November -OSS 117 (made by the same director as The Artist) -Little White Lies take care man

I don’t agree with your point about how there’s no comparison to Redmayne’s and Gyllenhal’s performances. Jake was excellent and would’ve been my runner up had he’d been nominated. But I feel like you seriously undermine how much Redmayne had to do. Playing a well known figure, especially one with a severe disability is extremely hard while also trying to make it convincing. It’s the type of performance that could’ve been a career ender with one wrong move, and he nailed it.

Yep he seriously undermined it. That is a very HARD role to do, Eddie's remarkable transformation plus his facial expressions when he couldn't speak anymore were so good and sad. The guy even slightly dislocated his spine in his work so he absolutely was the right winner. The Academy has always favored performances where actors undergo extreme physical transformations. From Fredric March in "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," forward to Daniel Day Lewis in "My Left Foot," and female stars have often won in performance where they "ugly up," like Grace Kelly in "The Country Girl," Charlize Theron in "Monster," and Nicole Kidman in "The Hours." In all these cases, a lot of the reason they won was due to the makeup artists!

Joaquin Pheonix definitely deserved that Oscar. I absolutely love him and he was MADE for that character. It didnt even have to be called 'Joker', just that character and the way he played him was phenomenal to me. One of my favorite movies ever and honestly without Joaquin I dont think it would be. wouldnt even be the same movie. ❤

I totally understand why Daniel Day Lewis left acting. He completely disappeared into every role he played. He wore their skin, thought only of their thoughts, their feelings. That must be absolutely exhausting! I can’t imagine how hard that must be to shake off…. But that’s what made him a quintessential master of his craft. We are grateful to you Mr Lewis 🙏

Totally on point with Joaquin Pheonix. He was so damn good in Walk The Line, I was surprised he didn’t get more acclaim for singing like Johnny Cash& his amazing portrayal of The Man In Black. I have never felt such a overwhelming response to a film performance as I did from Joaquin Phoenix in the Joker. I turned to my friend and said "if he doesn't win an Oscar" there is no justice and my friend agreed. I know you have this love for DiCaprio, an actor I have felt so often has been miscast, but Phoenix' performance is one of the best ever put on film. Seriously. Watch it again. Affleck was excellent, but again, Day Lewis was better in Lincoln and I would put him right behind Phoenix. You are definitely right about Malek though, and Michael Keaton so deserved the Oscar over Eddie Redmayne. What the hell happened there!?

Hi, I like the videos of Top 10 times when the Golden Globes, Bafta and SAG got it right respect the Oscar, so i ask you to do the " Top 10 times Critics Choice got it right", i know that the critics choice are the least popular awards of the award season but it's still one of the 5 importants, some winners are better than the Oscar, also than the bafta or golden globes of that year, for example George Clooney best actor in 2012, Eddie Murphy best supporting actor in 2007, or Carey Mulligan best actrees in 2021.

It seems plainly apparent that the right Oscar win would win for the right performance in the RIGHT year, but surprisingly, this happens rarely. Casey Affleck winning for Manchester by the Seas is one of those rare moments. He was devastating, heartbreaking and even occasionally wry, all without being "ACTOR!"-ly at any time. I appreciate your reflection on this, Brian! We don't get these kinds of wins often, and this well-deserved #1 position in your list honours how special this was.

I’m glad you came around and gave Casey Affleck his due. I remember writing a comment about him missing from your list of Top Acting Performances of the 2010s from two years ago, and I know I wasn’t the only one to do so. Overall, this is a solid list. The top two are correct, which is most important, and I think the rest are generally in the right places. I do have a slightly different take than you on the general unsatisfying list of Best Actor winners from this decade. Overall, I think all of the performances are good and that almost all deserved to win in their individual years. However, I feel the FILMS themselves that most won for were underwhelming and forgettable. The classic case of great performances in mediocre films. Exhibit A: Eddie Redmayne - he was outstanding in The Theory of Everything and completely deserved to win, but the movie itself was not very good. Also, I agree that although I appreciate that Gary Oldman has an Oscar, I would have ranked three of the other nominated performances that year over his showy Winston Churchill.
@nyc1512

Also, as much as I love the films of Paul Thomas Anderson and Martin Scorsese, I didn’t care much for The Master or The Wolf of Wall Street. You keep mentioning your high regard for those two films in several of your videos. I would like to see how you compare those two movies to the other films in the directors’ canons. Similar to your ranking of nominations for individual actors, I would love to see you rank the directors’ films and/or nominations. You may need to include Screenplay nominations in the case of PTA since he only has the three nominations for Best Director.

@@smann87 Yeah, here in France, most actors who pass over to Hollywood, get a breakthrough role, even end up winning an oscar (such as with Marion Cotillard and Juliette Binoche), generally get tired or simply don't want to work in Hollywood, and instead go back making films at home

The only part of Bohemian Rhapsody that I liked is the Live Aid concert. And I didn't like Rami Malek at all as Freddy Mercury. My vote was for Bradley Cooper too. And completely agree with you regarding Taron Edgerton. I love The Artist. I watch it fairly often. But, I'm a silent movie fan. So, I'm completely OK with Jean Dujardin's win. I also love Darkest Hour. But, my Master's degree is in World War II, so I'm naturally drawn to WWII movies. And I can believe Darkest Hour getting the Best Picture nomination. Yeah, not the biggest fan of Dallas Buyers Club. So, I agree with it being in the middle of the pack. I do agree with the transformations, though. I'm a bad movie buff, and I haven't seen The Theory of Everything. So, no opinion about it. I also would have picked Michael Keaton. Glad Leo has an Oscar. The Revenant is such an uncomfortable movie, so I don't like it. Painful to watch. But, I agree that he should have gotten an Oscar for anything else. I love Colin Firth, and I do really like The King's Speech. Again, WWII movie. Yeah, Joaquin Phoenix's win is one of the best of the 2010s. I agree. Love Lincoln. But, yeah, I was thinking of that Daniel Day Lewis ranking list you did. But, I find Hugh Jackman's performance in Les Miserables weak. Then again, I think that whole movie isn't good.
