A Trick For Perfect Inside Out Wood Turning

I was ask to show exactly how I make an inside out turning. I also show a trick that will help you make a perfect one with the design you had in mind. Makes it easy.
This is something I used to do while carving volute shapes for large pump patterns.
This will help someone who has never tried one but just had no idea where to start. If you already know the process this is not needed but it still can help.
Using 4 pieces of wood glued together can be dangerous. It is up to you to make sure they are held together while turning.

Well thank you PJ, in 2016 we took a long trip(from Oregon) across the states. I have been telling my wife I want to move to Tennessee. Probably the friendliest state I have been in. A paper poke...I like that. I also loved Kentucky and said the same thing. Of course I had to try a Kentucky Hot Brown. Thanks for watching, Gary

Gary I really like this. The light inside is a nice touch. You need a heater that you can run all night. Set the temperature to about 60* and it won't be so cold. I feel for you working out there when it's so cold.

Thank you Don! Yes I looked into putting a overhead gas heater in the last time we had the house furnace replaced. They said it was not a good idea with the dust. I used to spend the day out in my drift boat fishing in the coldest of the days and I did not care the least. One day my brother and I did that on a 20 degree day. Not no more! Take care, Gary

Thanks for another great video Gary. It wasn't until the end that I realised we both had similar jobs. I was an engineering pattern maker. The biggest jobs we turned on the lathe were around the 6 feet diameter. This was done on the end of the lathe with a floor tool rest. I look forward to watching more of your videos.

Thanks Dave and I turned a 6 footer on a pattern shop built lathe. Big timbers for the bed and the legs and castings made from patterns that were made at..you guest it..the pattern shop. When I went to the shop I retired from I turned a pattern about 8 foot in diameter on a large post lathe. Where did you do your pattern work? Which state or country. @@ThePapa1947 I am originally from the UK, but in 1967 I moved with my family to Australia. We settled in Adelaide, South Australia for 2 years and then moved to the industrial city of Whyalla, still in South Australia. I originally went for an apprenticeship in Joinery, but they had all been taken. I was steered towards Pattern Making not knowing a thing about it. But it was working with wood. When I had been there for a while, I was glad I took this trade on. The fine tolerances we had to adhere to made me a better wood worker. We worked in the same shop as the joiners. We had a saying on the wall 'Pattern Makers work to the nearest thousandth of an inch and the Carpenters work to the nearest tree' It cause quite a stir amongst the carpenters.

Hi Gary. This is only the second time I’ve watched an inside out turning. The first being your valentines one. Very fascinating process, but I think just a bit above my pay grade at this stage. Both amazing results. I’m sure I’ll get there eventually. When I was turning 45 years ago, you made round things, or you made long round things. I love the way turners are now experimenting and inventing new ways to get awesome results!! Thanks for that, Rick

Very nice explanation! I especially like the glue applicator you used to apply glue to the paper. I have one just like it! LOL

Thank you Tom, happy you liked it and understood it. Yes I learned how to apply glue long before they came up with those fancy applicators. Besides if you use a brush you have to dip it water then clean it out. This way you wait for the glue to dry and you peel if off your finger tip..LOL Thanks for watching, Gary

Very nice! This has peaked my curiosity to give it a try. Thinking the grandkids would like something like that with the LED light inside. Now to find a source for the LED lights. :)

I tried this following Gary's method and recommend it with one thought. Havd faith. It seems counterintuitive at times, hard to picture at others, but it works. If you're curious, just do what he says. It's a fun exploration of inside-out turning.

Thank you Mike and you are welcome. If you want to test the waters you could really start out simple. Just draw a shape like a half of a football. The turning would then be very easy and you will still get a nice shape. Or do a wavy one because that is easy as well. I guess I am just saying give it a try and you will love doing I/O turnings. I made a bottle one as well and of course it has a light in it to. Take care, Gary
