Hi guys, and welcome back to my channel! If you’re new here, my name’s Rachel and I’m a huge Eurovision fan, as well as a musician. In todays video, I reacted to for the first time, to The Netherland’s entry to this years ESC, in which they internally selected S10 with her song ‘De Diepte’.
I was really excited about this entry, due to reading about the artists background and her genres that she tends to perform in. It seems as if the Netherlands want to become a Eurovision powerhouse.
The song opens with a good guitar intro, which has a folk/country feel whilst staying in the lines of indie pop. S10’s voice really blends into the instrumental well, and soars in the chorus. There’s also a wonderful piano that’s quietly playing chords in the background of the track, helping to slightly pad out the texture….
But here’s where I found some faults. The intrumental texture is lacking, and feels quite thin. We could have done with some backing vocals, bass and perhaps some strings to diversify the sound. Instead, it pertains to a thin acoustic texture, in turn making the song seriously lack in impact or punch. Unfortunately, this could be quite worrying for Eurovision, where standing out and holding your audiences attention is key.
The verses weren’t as memorable as the chorus, but I think this shouldn’t matter too much in that the chorus will be the most repeated and in the forefront of the audience brains. The chorus is quite good and makes up for some of the other issues.
Overall, I was a little underwhelmed with the entry. I had high expectations so it’s partly my fault, but it just didn’t crack up to what I was expecting.
Initial Score: 7/10

The live version has slightly more and heavier percussion. So, maybe that makes it a bit better (for me anyway). kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fNGThZCrrpOUh58.html It seems to do well up to now.

I think it's beautiful and it's giving me goosebumps all the time, even after 25+ listens. It's very sublte, yet powerful, especially if you know the meaning of the lyrics and where she came from. I'm not often a fan of our Dutch entries, but this is probably my favorite together with Arcade.

In the clip she gets confronted what happened, she got into an argument with her boyfriend, he drives off alone and dies. Her tattoo lights up and he appears as a ghost and she still feels deeply connected to him, after seeing his motorbike at the garage at the `braketest` sign she walks off and cries her eyes out and his presence inside her fades. (The light on her cheek) The Lyrics Translation: Do you know the feeling that your dream won't come true? are you ever scared it will always stay the same? Because it's raining every day and I can't see anything You and me together, right? it would always be that way Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da Oeh-Ahh Here in the depth, I keep hearing your name Oeh-Ahh Oh my love what should i do? I'm in the depth and I don't want to let you go I'm hiding under the table and I hope you'll find me I'm already waiting the whole evening, Oh I look like a child I'm biting my teeth again and I know you're doing the same But God what else should I do, when is it enough? Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da Oeh-Ahh Here in the depth, I keep hearing your name Oeh-Ahh Oh my love what should i do? I'm in the depth and I don't want to let you go No, no, no, no Not letting you go Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da Oeh-Ahh Here in the depth, I keep hearing your name Oeh-Ahh Oh my love what should i do? I might add this on to my Dutch music playlist and maybe even check out their other songs, but at the same time I can't see this doing super well in the competition. I was waiting for an explosion that never came, some stronger element to really grab my attention as a good Eurovision song should do to get a top score, but this stayed subtle all the way through. I didn't get the whole story behind the lyrics, but the parts I understood seemed to fit the tone. So yes, beautiful, artistic, easy to listen to, but too easy to forget wheb competing against many of the others.

On first listen, I thought 'De diepte' was bland and that it was trying to make me feel something but wasn't quite getting there. I also have this sense of something missing and I think it's 1. the lyrical and vocal content does not quite match the instrumentation in emotional intent and 2. because of 1, the song pulls me in different directions and so doesn't really go anywhere. I feel like I'm in the warm comfort of her living room rather than anywhere deep. When I read the lyrics, I get that it's about grief at the stage before acceptance but after the intense, acute pain of loss has worn off. The idea of being in the depths lends to associations of being consumed or immersed, and I think this could be introduced musically through a legato bassline (where, correct me if I'm wrong, it is currently strummed guitars). The kind of richness I'm looking for as in say The Beatles' 'Yesterday', Wye Oak's 'Fish', or Sharon van Etten's 'When the Sun Comes Up'. That could harmonise with her voice in the verses, it can swell, fade away, go higher into the melody etc. I get that she is going for a minimal indie folk aesthetic, so maybe sustained piano ? I would have thought solo cello too but that might be too lush. To be clear, on subsequent listens, I can hear that the melody chorus is quite nice and her vocals are beautiful. Also, thank you Rachel for the opportunity to think deeply about the music, which I might not have done before !

@ronaldderooij1774
@ronaldderooij1774 2 жыл бұрын
I think it will be in the finals, probably top 10 but I see your point. The philosophy was: Less is more (impactful). That is not everybody's cup of tea. That is also why I don't think it will win, although singing pianissimo in head voice with breathiness is masterful. But nobody in Eurovision will notice that. I think it is a bit too sophisticated to be in the top three.

I loved Growing Up is Getting Old last year. This song gives me similar vibes. It is a soft, vulnerable song about mental health and depression. I think this is beautiful and vulnerable. It definitely isn't something to like on the first listen but add it to your playlist and you will probably find yourself repeating listens because it is just pleasant.
@durabelle

I see many people here defending this song by saying that it grows on you, and you'll need to hear it a few more times. Of course any of us here are likely to have heard at least some of the songs by the time of the competition, but most of the people I know only watch the main competition, some even skip the semifinal and jump straight to the final night. That's what I used to do until a couple of years ago too, and even now I don't listen to even half of the songs in advance, just the ones from my favourite countries plus those everyone is talking about. So if a song needs to grow on you, it's not likely to be noticed by the voting masses, which means they may get high jury score but lose on the audience vote.

Thought I was the only one that just randomly jumped in the fridge at some ungodly hour! Tbh, I thought you'd enjoy this more, but 7/10 is a fine mark. However, I do get your point, I was a little underwhelmed during my first listen, but then I heard it a second time, then a third, and it just got better. I think it could go either way, but I'm happy that they went for this song - it's kind of minimalist, and I think it's accessible to most audiences without it being "watered down pop".
@ThePeaceAround

Yeah I do like the minimalist vibe of the song, it’s definetly well produced. I just felt it was lacking in some thicker vocal texture, maybe some harmonies in the verses/background vocal chords? Idk. I still think it’s good and a quality entry from The Netherlands once again :)

I have been working my way through your videos and I just had to comment on your review of my favourite song of the contest this year. Along with Groot, you have both really enhanced my enjoyment of Eurovision this year. The song tells about Den Hollander's most personal memories. According to Den Hollander, "It's a tribute to the sadness and memories that you carry with you. Everyone experiences difficult times in their lives. That's something we all have in common and I hope [people] will feel less alone when [they] listen to the song".

I was there at the semifinals, and I instantly liked the song, she was my favourite. But than, listening it at home, I didn't feel the emotion; In live, the voice got way more resalted from the beat so it was way mote catchy. In the original version instead, the voice is still good but kinde gets lost. That's waht I tought, thanks for the video!

I'm so glad someone else shares my opinion on this (at least after a first listen)! I initially put my not connecting with this song down to the lyrics. For reference, I don't speak Dutch, and I love a good native language song. It's not that I couldn't understand the lyrics. It's that I felt the use of so many nonsense syllables one after the other (dadadadadada into the oohs) hindered the storytelling, or at least the way the storytelling came through for me. Again, having no specific words in lyrics is fine. It's a well-used technique to fill a melody line when words wouldn't fit. I actually think the dadadadas work (even if they probably would've been more impactful for me with lyrics in there... I felt really uncomfortable and like I was intruding when Stien was just about crying while singing something that lyrically sounded like filler), my main issue is with the oohs. Oohs are usually used in pop music as very small pieces of melody filler, space for riffs, or after an important lyric to give the listener time to digest the lyric without needing to move on to more lyrics. These uses all, for the most part work. But this song doesn't use the oohs in any of these three ways. It's a significant piece of melody filler, and it doesn't feel justified to me because it's not emphasising or letting any point sink in (at least the first time) because it comes in right after another significant piece of melody filler (the dadadas) and at the start of the chorus, which should begin by creating a new statement or musical idea (in both music and lyrics). It's really a shame because I love aspects of the instrumentation for this piece (although I do agree that more bass or strings would have been great) and in terms of genre it's right up my alley. I don't begrudge her the high placing, obviously I'm the exception here and a lot of other people connected with the song, which is great.

Contrary to some of the comments - I agree. Well, my musical education is not as strong as yours, but I have a few good years of studying jazz guitar and some University years in music technologies. The track has great production value, its well mixed, produced, filmed - all the marbles are great on those notes. But as a listener, I cant help but feel something missing - it just doesnt pop for me. It might be instruments, it might be the build up - I dont know. I just know you dont deserve all the backlash you are getting. The song's a great listen, I just dont think its a winner.

How long do you take to judge a song then? 41 seconds?

@@ThePeaceAround maybe listen to the end of the song? Or stick with Hole and Tori Amos. Nothing wrong with that 😎🤘

After 40 seconds you have a general idea of the style the song is following and can more or less say if it’s getting you or not. That might not be true with songs that reach their climax after more than 40 secs but it’s not this song’s case since it stays pretty much the same all the way through the 3 minutes.

If you don't understand the lyrics, and are not bothered to figure it out, you'll never understand the video. Nor the meaning. Pitty you.

Even with training, you can't take away biases and personal taste. To say she doesn't understand music because she doesn't feel the same way about it as you is short sighted. I don't agree with everything in the review but I get it's her OPINION. She's not convincing you not to like the song.
