Very cool! Whenever I lecture on WWII I mention Operation Barbarossa, and the students ask who is he? LOL I can send him here to get all the details on him. This will for sure be one I can recommend to my students!

Stories of Barbarossa and the Crusades were my earliest introduction to history. The Staufer dynasty as a whole were extremely incredible, a great and tragic history.

He had a life worthy of an epic film.

Fredrick Barbarossa was my favorite Crusader to learn about. Honestly if he didn’t drown I believe the Crusaders would have won he had the biggest army out of all crusader kings.

Barbarossa certainly lived an epic life and one if not the greatest holy roman emperor

Maybe it is because he was contemporary with Richard the Lionheart and Philip Augustus, and because of the manner of his death, English sources seem to always portray him as the crusading emperor. In Germany, it seems to be much more important that Frederick was the emperor who brought peace, and had the ability not only to satisfy his German vassals' interests but actually to gain admiration and love from his people (high-born and low-born). He was also associated with the development of cities and towns as well as the cultural boom under the Hohenstaufen. In Italy, in the past he was used as a symbol of foreign oppressor to nourish an independence movement. Today he is largely viewed in a much more positive way by Italian historiography, as he made contribution to legal and urban systems (although he also wreaked havocs on some cities), and last but not least, was the grandfather of the beloved Federico II, aka "Stupor Mundi". Some publications even refer to him as "King of Italy" (Re d'Italia) first and foremost. Another reason for his popularity is his character. Barbarossa was illiterate and simple (and thus in some way equal to the medieval average Joe) but intelligent and possessed dynamic leadership, and considered as being folksy/unpretentious and leaning towards gravitas ("symbolic leadership" in the words of modern researchers) in equal measure. Sure, Otto the Great or Conrad II, founders of the previous dynasties, were also illiterate great leaders, but Otto can hardly be described as "warm" or "close to the people" in any way (if you believe in spirituality, he and Otto von Bismarck - who was born near his grave - probably were of the same soul), and Conrad was even less charismatic. Intellectual monarchs (even geniuses in areas other than ruling) like Otto III, Henry II, Frederick II, Maximilian I, the Prussian Frederick II... were/are also highly popular, but their intellectuality itself sets them apart from the average Joe. Certainly accidental (or fateful?) factors like the manner of Barbarossa's death or the way he was so easily and bizarrely mixed with his grandson Frederick II, another "larger than life" character, also play a role.

I was very happy to finally get to see this. I had heard his name in the second crusade as a kid, and then made the connection organically to the operation. Barbarosa in World War II. I did this when I was about 16 and ever since then I was hooked on history. I am happy to finally get a full background on why he was significant other than his role in the second crusade. Wrote my two best marked essays at Uni on Frederick I and Frederick II in the Popes and Emperors module. Absolutely loved researching it. So many people pick 20th century history and I just love Medieval, Tudors, Stuarts and Georgians.

I always felt he got a bad rap simply because he never achieved total victory in his goals. But as a monarch, his rare willingness to accept compromised solutions with other stake holders interests in mind set an example for future rulers to follow. The German political system was so complex I have given up trying to understand it lol

Its insane how most of channels and articles just focus on the Crusades in which Frederick partecipated. In his life, the Holy Land wasnvery marginal for him; he passed most of his life fighting in Italy. Thats the main part of his life, not the crusades. In the Second he was just a boy, he couldnt decided anything. In the third, he was already old and weak. The most important part of his life is in Italy

Spreading conflict in Levant, disregarding authority of pope and initiating conflicts with Italians. Integrating power in eastern France which was part of "HRE". And expansion on east to Poland which initiate German colonisation of Western land of Poland. The Nazi used the name of prominent early German King with reason.

He was a great leader, but he was far less then 'the' great leaders. Uniting Germany, establish more although limited imperial power in Italy, and making some gains in Poland. However, he failed to change history, failed to achieve his goals, failed to establish world dominance, not even European dominance, failed to leave behind him a surviving legacy, just another failure in his name in operation Barbarossa that couldn't take over Russia despite being mighty and impressive.

Terrible military strategist. I have to wonder who was Frederick's primary confidant? Frederick's socioeconomic successes are found "between the lines" yet he didn't seem that intelligent. Going to Crusade in his 60s? What an ego.

The Holy Roman Empire was not an empire (almost no one submitted to the emperor), it was not holy (political violence was endemic and made Europe a living hell) and it was not Roman (Rome was a multiracial political organization with one language, one currency and one single legal system; the Catholic, half-Catholic and barbarian European kingdoms and fiefdoms were fragmented, each with its currency, language and very fragile legal rules).
